Summary: One of the better spoof films I've seen
Review: It's unfortunate that there are so many bad reviews for this film. I saw it last year at Sundance where it recieved a standing ovation in my screening. They don't make spoof movies like this anymore. It had been a long time since I had seen a film that made my stomach hurt from laughing so hard, Wet Hot accomplished this in the first 20 minutes. This is one of the great comedies of the last few years. And in time people will appreciate it for the soon to be comedy classic that it is.

Summary: I don't get it....
Review: I had read great reviews of this movie, and was looking forward to watching it on dvd..the whole time i did watch it i made this face like, what is going on? It was totally not what I thought it would be. I thought it would be a spoof on those late 70's early 80's summer movies, but it doesn't feel like that at all to me.
This is not funny at all, I didn't laugh at all. I thought it was very strange also. I never watched the State, and the director and one of the actors, David Wain and Michael Showalter, were both on that show.
Maybe I just don't get this brand of comedy if it is supposed to be one. It must take a certain individual to appreciate this film and I am not it. My husband said they should pay people to watch this one.
Avoid this ..if you want real comedy about summer camp, watch Meatballs...spoof or not. if you are a fan of the state or upright citizen's brigade, you will probably appreciate it...i don't get this brand of humor at all.

Review: ..if those titles didn't illicit a smile of recognition, then you probably won't really get Wet Hot American Summer. I'm 37, born in '64, and was 17 in the year WHAS is based, as were, I assume, its creators, give or take a year. And there was a time, right before the advent of John Hughes, when Hollywood really had no idea how to market to teenagers. Or at least, they had not yet learned how to be slick about it. When Molly Ringwald performed that strip-tease in reverse to the wailing strains of Psychedelic Furs, it heralded a new, youth-centered era in cinema, where every movie came packaged with happy meals and soundtrack albums. Prior to 1984, though, Hollywood had not yet done the math on how much expendable income the zit cream set was packing.

So we, the teens of yesteryear, had to be content with poorly-made, no-budget summer camp comedies, usually with a moderate amount of bare breast or butt, and copious amounts of bad skin, bad hair, bad fashions, and Matt Dillon (who is hilariously sent-up here by Paul Rudd). These were the movies you stayed up until 2am to see on HBO, back when HBO was the only channel still broadcasting at 2am. Not because they were good movies;
usually for the bare boobs.

Wain and Showalter were obviously playing with themselves right along with the rest of us on those nights, and WHAS is their valentine to a genre that was nearly parody to begin with. I suspect younger (or older) viewers might not be able to appreciate some of the jokes whose antecedents lie in late-Seventies cinematic cliches--the smirking appreciation of the motorcyclist as Ken Marino sprints away, for instance, or the group dismissal of a sports-related subplot as "just too hackneyed." My bottom line, though favorable, might not sound particularly positive to the film's financial backers: If you lived it, you'll love it.

P.S. Janeane Garofalo's performance is utterly charming. How rare yet wonderful to see her allowed to break out of her standard wisecracking sidekick typecast. If only Hollywood had any idea how to utilize this underrated comedic actress. Sigh. Think that's enough to get her to marry me?

P.P.S. Damn you, Wain and Showalter! I've spent the last twenty years suppressing the tune to Jefferson Starship's "Jane!"

Summary: Awful
Review: Couldn't believe how bad this was. Not funny bad, just awful. Why was this film made? Who financed it? Save your time and money. A total waste. You have been warned!

Summary: Just Plain Bad
Review: The only resemblance W.H.A.S. has to The State is that the faces are familiar. Irreverant, yes, but it's far from funny. This movie doesn't know the difference between spoofing and pointlessly recreating Meatballs style camp movies.

A note to the producer/director: Smarmy "in the know" acting doesn't make a movie a funny and it doesn't turn a wastoid plotless story into a parody.

Summary: What a waste of time.....
Review: I never heard of this movie before I saw it on the Amazon web site. Being a big fan of Garafalo and having enjoyed the work of Hyde Pierce on Frasier, I was really excited to see this movie-- especially after seeing all the great reviews it received on Amazon.

I seriously hope that the actors in this movie were paid enough that they will never have to work again because it's movies like this that ruin careers. This movie suffers from bad writing, a lack of continuity, an uninteresting and undeveloped plot and-- it pains me to say this-- bad acting. Often, bad films can actually be funny for all the wrong reasons, however, this movie isn't even unintentionally funny. The film is good for one or, maybe, two smirks while the rest of time is spent feeling genuinely embarrassed for everyone involved. Avoid this one....

Review: This is, by far, one of the worst movies I have seen. I really don't know where to begin... so I won't bother. I'll simply say DO NOT BUY... you will thank me for this advice.

Review: Fans of Mtv's The State will love this movie... Others not used to this kind of absurd humor will not appreciate the sheer genius of Wet, Hot American Summer creators David Wain and Michael Showalter. Well done I say. This movie is a beautiful spoof of summer camp movies with the emphasis on camp. All other teen movie spoofs should hang their heads in shame.

Summary: Awful, Horrible, NOT FUNNY, Waste of time, Waste of film
Review: I am dumbfounded by the number of great reviews here. I was so eager to see this movie. The cast is excellent, the premise is really good and the movie... What happened? Well, first of all it is not funny. There may be two half-smiles throughout - that's it. Even the worst of the silly eighties comedies were at least a LITLLE funny. This is not. Tech/production work is atrocious, there is absolutely NO continuity and the great cast looks like they are in pain. Somebody owed somebody some money. One last thing: as bad as everyone is in this, David Hyde Pierce - do not give up your day job!

Summary: comedy a'plenty!!!
Review: This is a great movie!!! this movie was so funny i started coughing and then i said "Wow!, this movie is so funny it made me cough!!" (true story) anyway, this is a really well done funny movie. in a time where good comedy's are hard to come by, usually they're teen t&a,gross out films or bad SNL alumni films, this movie makes you laugh on many levels. wain and showalter wrote a very good script, also showalter, michael ian black, ken marino and joe letruglio, as previously seen on The State are wicked hilarious, and did a great job. the rest of the cast is very good as well. the bonus features on the DVD are great too. i highly recomend this movie, do yourself a favor and buy this movie now!! don't wait! if you didn't like this movie then you probably smell like bad cheese and think golden girls is hilarious and enjoy talking to telemarketers. i can't believe it was only shown in select theatres, i saw it in the movies during the summer in boston and cried laughing! Note: small animals do not enjoy this film for some unknown reason. also do yourself a favor and buy the book State by state with the state, a very funny book that you can pick up at Amazon.com as well.
