Rating: Summary: At last! New MST3K! Review: You may be confused by my heading, but as a British MST3K fanatic I only ever get to see the same 12-13 episodes that are repeated ad-nauseum on the SCi-fi channel (alas, even season 10 is not going to get an airing). But with "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" I could finally sit back and laugh at some brand new MST3K right from the first riff: "Look at this brain ... it just won't die!" The movie, as always in MST3K, is downright awful and it did take me a while to get used to Crow's different voice, but once I'd settled in it was pure MST magic! If the rest of the videos available are as good as this, you can guarantee I will be building a collection as fast as I can. MST3K ... won't you?
Rating: Summary: Frankenstein Meets The Actor's Studio Review: There are probably worse things than putting a bunch of New York actors in a cheapo horror film. No, let's be definite about it--there are. It's just that, having seen this movie, I can't what those things would be . . .The problem with New York actors is they have this tendency to, well, ACT. More accurately, to Method Act. This is a film full of people who have written out their character biographies, done their Visualizations and Sense Memory Exercises, and are deeply psyched to play mad scientists, scarred, angry nudie models, and severed heads. Not just to play them, but to play the stuffings out of them. Which is just what they do. The problem is that all they have to work with is a cheap, nasty little horror flick where the title character babbles away in what looks like a lasagna pan, while her fiancee, the aforementioned mad scientist, cruises strip joints, beauty contests, and camera clubs looking for a nice body upon which to mount her noggin. This is played with the seriousness of a late O'Neill tragedy (A MOON FOR THE MIS-BEHEADED?). "Jamie, is that a talking severed head in our icebox?" "No, Mother, it's just your morphine acting up again."
Rating: Summary: Mikes first movie... Review: You have to see it just for that! But the movie is very good, goofy with great characters and an interesting plot. Great riffs throughout the movie with some great host segments as well.
Rating: Summary: Mike's maiden voyage on MST3K left me in tears Review: The usual tale of the mad scientist, or in this case doctor attempting to revive the dead. He proves that he has the technology to do the deed. Despite the warning of his famous neurosurgeon father, Dr. Evil decides to finally introduce his girlfriend to his project. On the drive there, he speeds...gets in a wreck...she is decapitated...he retrives her head and runs through the woods to his workshop, head in hand. He keeps her head alive in some "neck juice", until he can find a body to attach her to. Dr. Evil cases the strip clubs and eventually finds the right body. He brings a babe back to his hideout, drugs her, and if it were not for his failed experiment in the closet, which amazingly resembles "Chunk" from the Goonies....well, you get the idea. This was Mike Nelson's first MST3K and everybody kept calling him everything but his name. At first it was annoying, but as these shows usually go, I eventually laughed until I cried. This was one of the funniest MST's I have ever seen. Mike and the robots were right on cue with their insults and there were no low or slow points, which is unusual for this show. The DVD offered the movie without the gang, a cool MST3K sticker, and the bonus material is Rhino's usual worthless promotions...no real bonus. Despite the lack of cool stuff on the DVD, it is worth buying for the sheer hilarity.
Rating: Summary: We've got Movie Sign...for *two* versions of "The Brain"! Review: [This is a review of the DVD version] If you love old bad SF movies but haven't ever seen them given the Mystery Science Theater treatment, you owe it to yourself to pick up this DVD! Mike Nelson and his robot pals Crow and Tom Servo watch this relentlessly silly turkey of a movie (a scientist saves the severed head of his girlfriend and puts her in a pan, where she pleads with him to let her die. How sloppily-put-together is this film? The filmmakers apparently forgot their own title and call it "The Head That Wouldn't Die" in the end credits.)--and throughout the entire film, Tom and the 'bots mercilessly riff on the film with funny comments and jokes that'll have you rolling in your seats. Long a staple of Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Channel, this is one of the first DVDs of this classic comedy series (many others are available on VHS). In addition to the pristine and clear picture you get with DVD, Rhino has also included the full *original* version of "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" on the flip-side of the disc so you can see it without Mike and the 'bots (to riff on your own, perhaps?). The DVD menus are innovative and worth checking out just for the clever swish-pan of the bridge of the Satellite of Love (Crow, Servo, and Gypsy flash past us). If I had any quibble at all it's a minor one... why is the DVD chapter that begins the film entitled "It's Movie Time!" when every MSTie knows it should be "We've got Movie Sign!"? But I'll put up with minor problems like that as long as Rhino continues to give us these great reissues of classic MST3K episodes. Now if they'd only release "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" and "Outlaw"... (Also recommended in this series: the DVD version of "Mystery Science Theater 3000: Eegah.")
Rating: Summary: Finally! Review: I have seen this episode countless times. sometimes watching my own taped version, others when the vhs tape was released, and now finally on dvd this piece of pop culture phenomena shall be eternal! the episode itself is timeless, hilarious, and thouroughly enjoyable. it makes me hopeful for more dvd releases in the future.
Rating: Summary: Gutter-bumber-shoot! Gutter-bumber-shoot! Review: This is the begining of Mike Nelson's rather permanent temp job. He has to watch his first movie and form a relationship with his new coworkers, Tom and Crow. Luckly he does a very good job at riffing for a first timer, but he still needs time to perfect his hosting. Over all a very good episode. "I just realized what I just did. It was really gross!" Funny! Rowsdover?
Rating: Summary: nelson wins his first round Review: loveable mikey trained hard for this, and it paid off. in his first battle against the worst movies ever, nelson and the bots reduced me to a girly heap of giggling silliness as they showed no mercy against a mother of a movie.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't Have Laughed harder! Review: This was one movie that was so bad, i would have laughed at it without MST making fun of it! Mary Jo Pehl as the "Brain That Wouldn't Die" in one of the cut scenes was hilarious! A must see and buy for any MST3K collection.
Rating: Summary: You can make a movie with 4 backdrops, a camera and a car? Review: This movie is deservingly well MST-ied. Who'd think you could make a movie with 4 backdrops, a car, a camera, and a bunch of women who shouldn't be dressed like hootchies. And lets not forget the monster who we HEARD but only saw for about a minute, and couldn't maim anybody with a freakin' chainsaw. In the monster scene, where the bargan basement beast is girl slapping our main character, Crow blurts out in a goofy voice "Does this bug you? Does this bug you? Does this bug you?". And lets not forget the story's head, which ends up dying(?)in her pan, in the fire at the end and according to Mike 'makes her own gravy'. Finally, the bar scene introduces one of the badly dancing, psuedo-hootchies, who is dancing to tell everybody 'that there are no baked potatoes until after five'. Yes this story of a scientist who wishes to build a 'Franken-Hooker' gets a 5 out of 5 in my book.
