Summary: BLLLUUUEEECCCHHHHEEER! -- hilarious!
Review: I saw this film at the cinema when it came out and watched it many times since then. Mel Brooks and his company of comedic actors are brilliant! Gene Wilder is in his best role as young Professor Frankenstein; and who can forget googely-eyed Marty Feldman as Igor? In this star-studded and twisted "Frankenstein-Parody" all performances are memorable, but Madeline Kahn is priceless! Enjoy this wacky belly-laugh fest!

Summary: Movie itself gets a 5, but the commentary gets a 3!
Review: This is one of the all-time great comedies! I love it! There's a gentle love for the great horror classics of the early century, and for the way they were made. Gene Wilder, Teri Garr, Peter Boyle and the inimitable Madeline Kahn are all fantastic!

That said, the commentary was awful. Brooks does a play-by-play of what's going on on the screen. I could have figured that out myself by simply watching. He also comes off as full of himself, rude, and difficult to work with. It's too bad, as I was really looking forward to a commentary for one of my favorite movies.

My advice, buy the video. You can do a running commentary on the action on the screen yourself if you really want it!

Summary: A DVD extras review
Review: This film is not one of my favorite Mel Brooks films. I like his more goofy films such as Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs. I got this DVD for the extras. The documentary is very good with some very funny outtakes. There are also some excellent deleted scenes too. A couple of scenes that are rightfully cut such as the reading of the will that would have explained the beginning better, but definitely dragged on. A shorten version of them should have been left in. A whole series of scenes that made Gene Wilder's and Terry Garr's 'intellectual discussions' a running gag that definitely should have been left in, they are hilarious. The outtakes are okay, they could have included more, and only about 10 minutes worth is included. The documentary has more and you get the feeling that a whole film could be made from just the outtakes. The commentary by Brooks in very good, he adds bits about the scenes, actors and other trivia that is enlightening. He isn't too verbose and he doesn't run out of things to say, both of which are common in other commentaries. Production photos are also included which I have never gotten much from. Finally, there are included two interviews with a Mexican newscaster which I found a bit weird and had me wondering what they were all about. A Mexican news team must have been visiting the film site. They are amusing in their own right, but doesn't do much but take up space. Overall, not as many extras as some Special Editions but adequate. This DVD is not a must have in my collection, but if you love the movie, a good DVD for fans.

Summary: Absolutely hysterical!
Review: This is, in my humble opinion, the funniest movie ever made. I still laugh when I think of some of the scenes. About three months ago I actually burst out laughing in the middle of study hall when I thought about Inga singng "Vroll, vroll, vroll in da hay..."

This is probably Gene Wilder's best movie, and Peter Boyle is hysterical (literally at some times) as the monster. The true unsung hero, though, is Marty Feldman as Igor (pronounced eye-gor). If you like this movie, you would like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, or the Producers, which is a close second to Young Frankenstein.

Summary: A true american classic
Review: Gene Wilder's performance and writing are nothing short of genius in this comic masterpiece. Hilarious yet emotional, dark yet brilliantly funny. This film was executed with the utmost experties under the able eye of Mel Brooks. On DVD, this film just comes to life...crisp and in all it's widescreen glory, it's truely not to be missed. The comic timing in this piece is spot on and there are subtle laughs throughout ("Don't worry my dear, it's just a rat...a filthy, slimy rat!"). Some of the people I know can't appreciate this film, but in my opinion, this is a comedy classic of the highest quality. I really can't say enough about it.

Summary: A "No-Brainer"
Review: Absolutely the funniest movie ever made. Even funnier if you've seen the classic films being spoofed. The black-and-white format is a master stroke. EVERYONE should own this movie!

Summary: A Riot is an ugly thing...and I think I'm gonna' make one
Review: Young Frankenstein is my all-time favorite comedy film. I know I've seen it well over one and a half dozen times, would never NEED to watch it again, yet put it on once a year or so just for the heck of it, or to view it with a friend who's never seen it before! It always makes me laugh (often before the joke happens)! However, this particular tape proved to be a bit of a disappointment. It promised to be digitally remastered and have some extra stuff after the movie, which it did. But, the overall quality was a bit amiss. For example, for some reason the black outs between scenes are too lengthy, often cutting out some footage. The most disturbing place this happens is after Wilder exclaims, "IT. COULD. WORK! " Usually we see the portrait of his look alike grandfather smiling with glee, but here there was nothing but a black out. Another one is earlier when Frahnkensteen is leaving on the train and Madelein Kahn is left to cough in the thick steam. There again is a rushed black out; what should we be laughing at at this point when the whole joke is lost from bad editing. It's almost as bad as the time I caught "Blazing Saddles" on television and they were at the infamous eatin'-beans-around-the-campfire scene--IN TOTAL SILENCE! Anyway, Young Frankenstein really deserves 6 stars on a 1 to 5 rating scale. It's just that this version of the video doesn't quite measure up! Oh, and the appendix sections on bloopers and cut scenes isn't really funny at all. Thank goodness they did cut those scenes, though!
