Summary: Silly and Ingenious
Review: Long before "Scream" and "Scary Movie" spoofed horror movies, Mel Brooks had set the standard much higher with "Young Frankenstein" (pronounced "Frohkensteen"). One comic spoof after another, pratfalls, zingy one-liners, zany chases, puns, and memorable characters flow throughout this movie. Madelaine Kahn is perfect as the lusty bride of Frankenstein, and Cloris Leachman is frighteningly hilarious as Frah Blucher (hold the horses!). Gene Wilder as Frankenstein and Marty Feldman as Igor (pronounced "Eye-gore) are an unbeatable duo here. This is a zany, silly, ingenious work of comic art that pokes fun at every classic horror movie you can think of. Great fun!

Review: I could handle Gene Wilder's obnoxious loud voice in this one, it works. Chocolate Wonka Wonka is the other. Marty Felman is The Best! what a freak! and English too whatever that means. FAV PART... the line - Dr.F: Are you trying to make me look like a fool? from the stage show. Teri Garr is HOT! Go to a T.G. website or imdb NOW!

Summary: This is not Mel Brooks
Review: I am sure that Mel Brooks played the major role in directing this movie, helping to secure from the actors the very best performances, as well as adding certain more crude enhancements to the script. Undoubtedly, he made many other contributions I am not aware of. He also had the sense to insist, despite studio pressures, that the film be made in black and white.

However, the real driving force, inspiration and heart of this movie was Gene Wilder. As this Special Edition DVD makes clear, Gene Wilder came up with the story; Wilder also wrote the initial drafts of the script, with Brooks joining him to help rewrite and finalize it. Brooks gets screen co-credit with Wilder for both the story and the script, but it is clear that that most of it sprang from Wilder. It was Wilder who insisted, and fought for, the "Puttin on the Ritz" scene--Wilder-type humor, not Brook's. (Brooks was inclined to eliminate it) "It's pronounced 'Fronk - ken - steen', not 'Fran - ken - stein'" was in the original script, written by Wilder. That conceit, that denial of his "famous and infamous" grandfather, as well as his own tendencies as a Frankenstein, is the ongoing joke that makes the movie work hilariously.

It is Wilder's contribution, as an actor, that also makes this movie: his superb facial expressions, his ironic, exaggerated, sarcastic performace is the essence of the movie's denial-styled humor. (On the other hand, if Brooks is responsible for those fantastic close-ups, maybe I am being unfair) I am not trying to detract from Mr. Brook's undeniable talents, but it bothers me that he seems to get the majority of the credit for this movie. Compare Young Frankenstein to other Brook's films, none of them nearly as good. Ask yourself: was History of the Word and Blazing Saddles done by the same man that did Young Frankenstein? There are many who love Blazing Saddles; it was, after all, a hit, and many consider it a good, very funny film. By any measure, however, it lacks the sophistication, cleverness and classic quality of Young Frankenstein.

Young Frankenstein...This is not Mel Brooks. This is Gene Wilder.

Summary: Brook's Best Work
Review: Truely Brooks best work rivaled only by Battlefield Earth. Was L Ron on Cid Ceasar's Show of Shows? At any rate the two would a written a great comedy together.

Be sure to check out History of the World Part I, Blazzing Saddles, and the producers.

Summary: "Put.....The Candle.....Back!".....
Review: Young Frankenstein is Mel Brooks' crowning achievment. He would never again reach these great comedic heights ever again in his career. Gene Wilder stars as a descendant of the mad doctor, Victor Frankenstein. Although Wilder insists on it being pronounced "Fronk - In - Steen". This movie, although released in the mid 70's, is filmed in great black and white. It was a great touch that added the mystique of the film. It wouldn't work again until 1994 when Tim Burton did it for his masterpiece film "Ed Wood". The cast and performances are inspiring. A young Teri Garr is mighty catching in her finely tuned comedic performance. The great Marty Feldman co-stars as Igor, who doesn't seem to notice the rather large hump on his back. Then there's Cloris Leachman as Frau Blucher(thanks Paul). She is one of our finer female comedians. There's even a cameo by Gene Hackman. Lastly, we come to Peter Boyle. A great actor who gives a knee slapping performance as the monster. The dance sequence to the song "Putting On The Ritz" still makes me laugh just thinking about it. Lucky for us, we get to see more of his comedic talent every week on "Everybody Loves Raymond". Sadly, watching the brilliant Madeline Khan only saddens the viewer to know that this brilliant comedienne is no longer with us. She will be horribly missed. There is jokes and sight gags galore throughout the whole movie. Each one is a winner. So is this classic.

Summary: Brooks wins the Gold Medal
Review: Excellent. What made it so good was that he turned the boring Frankenstein into an outragous comedy. Gene Wilder is FUNNY!!!!!!! Peter Boyle was good as the monster. Gene Hackman also had a very funny part.

Summary: The ULTIMATE in Mel Brooks Humor!
Review: This movie is fantastic! The fabulous Saturday Night Live crew do it again! There are countless lines in this movie that you will be quoting over and over and they never cease to be funny. Marty Feldman is a gas as Igor (that's pronounced EYE-gor!) and Gene Wilder plays a hilarious Frederic FRAWNkenstein. I recommend this movie to everyone who loves Mel Brooks unique sense of humor. This re-released version also includes some great scenes that were cut from the original version as well as a few "bloopers." My whole family loves this show!

Summary: So why isn't it Frohderick Frohnkenstein?
Review: People might find other Mel Brooks films to be funnier, but "Young Frankenstein" is far and away his best film ever. A lot of the credit goes to Gene Wilder, who co-wrote the script and plays Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, grandson of the infamous monster maker who finally decides to pick up the family business. Then there is the first-rate cast, with Peter Boyle as the Monster ("Putting on the Riiittzzzz"), Marty Feldman as Igor ("What hump?"), Madeline Kahn as Elizabeth ("Ah, sweet mystery of life at last you've found me"), Terri Garr as Inga ("Roll, roll, roll in the hay!", and Cloris Leachman as Frau Blucher (Neeeeiiigghghh!!!!!). I even like the film score by John Morris that sets the right tone from start to finish. But what I think makes this film work is that there are several scenes that are played absolutely straight, such as when Frederick claims his family name and the Monster is tormented in the jail cell. Yes, this is a comedy, but it has a strong affection for the films it is spoofing, "Frankenstein" and "The Bride of Frankenstein." The extra material included on the DVD shows that Brooks and Wilder left lots of funny shtick on the cutting room floor, which should not surprise anyone. There is no reason that "Young Frankenstein" and "The Producers" cannot be included on anybody's list of Top 10 Comedy Films of All-Time.

Summary: A "Must Have" Classic
Review: I've loved this movie since the first time that I saw it. Gene Wilder has always been one of my favorite actors. My favorite scene in the movie is when Gene and the "Monster" dance to Putting on the Ritz. This movie always makes me laugh and feel better about the world. This was a movie that I had to get for my collection of classics.
