Summary: I AM AMAZED OUT OF MY MIND!
Review: Most people my age (13) aren't all that interested in the writing of the Declaration of Independance, but I was before I even saw this film. I watched in my 8th grade history class, and I was astounded. I had expected some stupid, booooooring documentary-same old, same old. But this movie was the exact opposite! While it is, in many cases, historically inacurate, any person with a sense of humor can look past that and see how real the movie really seems. The actors actually look like the people they are portraying-the likenesses are almost unbelievable. The songs are great, and the pure emotion seeps through. It has deepened my interest in history-I hope the play comes to Virginia soon! I think I would even drive to DC to see it. The movie is beautifully written. While 1776 is not exactly a Gone With The Wind, I found the former much more entertaining than the latter. After we wathched it in class, we were all singing the songs and reciting our favorite line. And now my 6 year old sister is hooked! This film is, in the words of Daniels, INCREDIBLE!

Summary: Wonderful film and performances!!!
Review: 1776 along with the Quiet Man for St Patricks day are holiday jewels. I loved the bickering between Franklin and Dickinson (of Pennsylvania). I almost cried when I found out the play was back on stage in NY in Aug of '98 and I was stuck here in SF. I hope the play will make another round soon!!!

Summary: My favorite movie
Review: When I was 3 years old, I saw a production of 1776 at a local theater. I liked it so much My father rented it on video and now 12 years later it is still my favorite movie. Every time I go to a video store I look in the 'S' section in the DVD's hoping I'll see 1776 there. I hope it comes out on DVD soon or at least a video release of restored footage.

Review: This musical is one of my favorites of all time. Memorable music and performances. One of the few Broadway musicals transformed to film that is as close to the original play. A definate 4th of July tradition.

Summary: One of my all-time favorites
Review: No, 1776 is not historically accurate. It is a musical for entertainment, and it delivers that in spades. Howard DaSilva is brilliant as Ben Franklin, capturing the wit and devilish nature of an American legend. William Daniels is in top form as the "obnoxious and disliked" John Adams. Ken Howard is dashing and chivalrous as Thomas Jefferson. Now, over 20 years after I first saw it, my children's teachers are asking them to bring it to school so their classes can watch it. This movie is a gem, and it brings history to roaring life in a way kids and adults can enjoy.

Summary: Excellent composition, color, dramatization.
Review: We can overlook the fact that the movie adheres to the myth that the Declaration of Independence was signed in one day because the events leading up to that day are presented in such a delightful, compelling, entertaining way. We feel the pain of the separation between husband and wife. We feel the hardships suffered by General Washington's army and the mother's that must go out and find their sons who "didn't come home for supper". We grind our teeth at the frustration felt by the delegates in attempting to debate and decide the issue of independance. We cringe at the dark and moving portrayal of the industry that was slavery. The humor that flows throughout the piece serves to binds the parts together and, in some instances, to relieve the tension. It is a wonderful movie for the whole family.

Review: The film "1776" is a charming piece of film history, with rousing musical numbers (some fun and some chilling) alongside the wit and humor of Benjamin Franklin (Howard Da Silva) and John Adams (William Daniels). Throughly entertaining and complete with historical accuracies, this is one not to be missed. Say yea to "1776".

Summary: Great Movie but when's the widescreen coming
Review: I love 1776 but the this cheap video version drives me crazy. I'm still waiting for a VHS or DVD widescreen version. How about one with THX remastering. It would be nice if they could figure out a way to restore the "Cool, Cool Condsiderate Men" number as they did for the special laserdisc version a few years back.

Review: In U.S. History class we wathched this movie and we all loved it. That really unique for a bunch of teen-agers watching a muscial. I loved this movie because William Daniels did and excellent job acting as John Adams.

Summary: Bicentennial Memories!
Review: I saw 1776 on television during the Bicentennial celebration in 1976. I loved the way it made history come alive! I attended the production of 1776 whenever it was in town, at our local college, traveling troupe, etc. In later years when VCR's became popular, and movies began to be easily accessible at the video store, I often asked about 1776, but no one had heard of it. When I became a fifth grade teacher this year and began to teach American history, I knew I had to mount an all out search so my students could benefit from this fun portrayal of a great event in history. I'm so thrilled I found it, and could provide my students with the experience of "seeing" John Adams, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and other very brave Americans as they "sweated" (literally) their traitorous actions against King George.
