Summary: Sixties timepiece
Review: By the time that "Head" was released, the Monkees were no longer cool. It died at the box office and lost money. More people have probably seen it on video and DVD than in the theatre! It is a mix of well done psychedelia, sometimes lame sketches, good visuals, a very good editing style (hyperkinetic fast cutting), so-so music (except for the "Porpoise Song" which sounds a bit like Lennon in his "Across the universe" phase), strange cameos, etc. It isn't a film you can't live without but it is worth a watch. Pretty daring for the Monkees. If they were trying for a film that would expand fans and detractors idea of what they were capable of, they succeeded. Much better than "Magical Mystery Tour" (the film), which isn't saying much, I know.

Review: This movie goes right up to the top, together with The Beatle's
"Magical Mystery Tour" and "Easy Rider", as the movies which
define the psychedelic era.The Monkees are legends and this movie is so cool because they (and the writers) make a lot of statements (such as the very obvious anti-Viet Nam war - and the fact that they can play live) to show the world that they are not just "tv puppets" controlled by the producers of their tv show. Don't get fooled into thinking this is a feature-length hilarious adventure based on the tv series - as it's not. It is a wonderfully psychedelic, intelligent and cleverly written and well-acted movie which is full of wild imagination and sly humour, with some great in-jokes and cameos (if you can spot them) which any fan of late sixties music will enjoy. It's a more whackier version of The Beatles' "Help!" in my opinion...
Also, it's quite dark and bleak in its' depiction of the Monkees - they don't really act like the characters they play in the tv show, more rather they act near enough their real selves. The scenes at the beginning and end of the movie where they jump off the bridge to the tune of "Porpoise Song" is one of the most beautifully filmed things I have ever seen and it always brings a lump to my throat and a few tears to my eyes. It is like the movie's basically saying: This is the end of the Monkees (which turned out to be the case near enough)... This movie practically killed The Monkees career but they did go one step beyond the bizarre zone with their final tv outing: the ultra-psychedelic tv special "33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee". All I can say about that one is: See it to believe it, man!!

Review: I have seen this movie so many times and it still doesnt make sense, but who cares, its so FUNNY and such GOOD MUSIC just fire up your bong(EXCEPT YOU AMERICANS) and escape with the monkees...ps the monkees cd INSTANT REPLAY is greatly underrated PEACE

Review: This movie is kind of strange but as long as you like the Monkees, I dont think you'll care. The movie was kind of wierd to me but I like the Monkess so I don't really care. Some parts were kind of funny and it showed that the guys have real acting abiltites. This movie isnt for everyone but if you like the Monkees, then it's for you!

Summary: How to understand HEAD
Review: No plot, no in-your-face messages, held together by a string thinner than Ally Macbeal; like that's a bad thing!? Look, if your really that pampered that you need everything in a movie spelled out for you like a kindergardener, then this movie simply isn't for you. I think it says it best on the movie poster: "A movie for a switched on audience." Now your thinking that it's only for 60's "clear-liquid swimmers." Weeelllll, no. I'm only 16 and I LOVE this movie! And there are several messages in HEAD, you just need to look under the surface for them. The music is GREAT, too. Oh, and to agree with another review I saw on here, yes, the boys do look awesome! So, to answer my title question, to understand HEAD...USE YOUR HEAD!!=)Peace=)

Summary: A Trip Back Into The 60s
Review: When you watch Head, it is like you stepped back in time to the 1960s with a rock band at the height of their popularity. Head, being the Monkee's first movie, written by Jack Nicholson, is a psychadelic trip down memory lane. There really is no plot but I recommend it to everyone who is a Monkees fan or just wants to watch a very bizarre movie.

Summary: Antithesis of the TV Show
Review: I saw this film for the first time when AMC had a rockin' movie marathon that also included the Woodstock movie and the Who's Tommy (both great films) but I'm supposed to talk about Head. There's no cohesive plot, but after you watch it a couple times it sorta comes together (and no i didn't smoke up at all at any point before, during or after the movie): It's almost like the movie moves backwards and culminates with the opening scene-whoops, i guess i gave it away. But anyway, the funny moments and guest spots (including a quick cameo by Jack Nicholson), as well as the music, balance out with the wierder moments. Definitely worth checking out.

Review: Mesmorizing, engrossing and vivid. 3 words that describe the fame that must've been swarming in the HEADS of these 4 twenty-somethings at the crest of their popularity. The air is very light up there and get ready from a dizzying ride through suicide fantasies, spagetti westerns and self-depriciating humour as the Monkees lay it all out on the line in 87 minutes of raw emotion. Here are four Pinochio's that've come to life and are basically biting the Gepetto hand that feeds them. That is, they turn their noses up at the pre-teen set because the creative music they are giving birth to is way beyond the bubble gum army that has made them famous. HEAD is basically several music videos strung together in-between rants of frustrated musician angst. The images do grab you and and haunt you while the music draws you in like some sort of nymph from Homer's oddessy, making you want to watch more. So do watch it, but late at night, when the kids are asleep, and you've got 4 beers to drink. It needs no explanation because there is none that can describe having everything you want at such a young age. And the movie ends right where it begins, as you find yourself taking the plunge with the Monkees, head first, into the vast abyss of American pop.
