Summary: Doris Day & John Raitt, Wonderful in "The Pajama Game"
Review: Doris Day, without a doubt, was the greatest female musical/comedy star Hollywood ever produced. I know that Judy Garland fans will disagree, but, I like Doris better.

When "Pajama Game" was brought to the screen, Doris Day was given sole star billing, of course, with Raitt, Carol Haney and Eddie Foy, Jr. getting secondary rankings. Mr.Raitt had top billing on Broadway, but this was Hollywood.

Miss Day was fascinating as Babe Williams, head of the grievance committee at the Sleep Tite Pajama Factory. She falls in love with the new forman, played by Raitt. A 7 1/2 cent raise is at stake for the workers, with management playing dirty tricks.

The musical score is great. Doris Day was in wonderful voice which was clear and poinant as she reprised that marvelous standard, "Hey There". "I'm Not at All in Love" was very entertaining with Day really showing us how a musical number should be done.

With Raitt, she does the standout "There Once Was A Man", and they both perform to perfection. What a great number!

The songs that were omitted from the original Broadway cast, were not missed here. I would love for Doris to have had another ballad, perhaps they could have written something special for the film version.

Carol Haney was fun as Gladys and danced up a storm with Bob Fosey's signature choreography in two highlights of the film, "Once a Year Day" and "Steam Heat.

Eddie Foy, Jr., Barbara Nichols, Rita Shaw and Thelma Pelish, all holdovers from the stage version added much to the proceedings.

Stanley Donen's direction was deft. This is one of his best pictures, but he never mentions it in documentaries on him. I don't understand why he consentrates on "Funny Face". This is a much better film.

Summary: Great Song & Dance Numbers
Review: For years I was disappointed at company picnics because they were never as much fun as the big picnic scene in Pajama Game. That scene alone is worth the price of the movie. "Steam Heat" is a fantastic dance number, but all of the musical numbers are good, and bear up wonderfully under the scrutiny of repeated viewings. Overall, a great movie with a very talented cast, and fun to watch. The DVD version is a little grainy, especially when viewed on a large screen, but don't let that deter you.

Summary: Not one of Doris Day's best movies
Review: I am a Doris Day fan to the end, but this one was so boring I never even bothered to watch the end! It hasn't been put in the VCR since I watched it the first time.

Extremly disappointed in the movie.

Summary: THE COLOR IS SPECTACULAR!!!
Review: I can't understand why this DVD doesn't rate a total 5 stars here! It's one of the best DVDs I have because it looks absolutely dazzling, the songs are great, the plot is silly - but so what?, the love story is great, the chemistry between John Raitt and Doris Day is out of this world, the "extra" on the DVD is superb (an outtake from the film of Doris singing a song that was dropped from the film!)...I can't get enough of this DVD! It should win awards for picture quality! If I wanted to sell someone on DVDs in general, I'd pick this DVD as evidence of their superiority over videos. And whatta FUN film!!

Summary: Like watching an AFL-CIO contract negotiation...
Review: I LOVE Doris Day, but would rank this film at the bottom of the list of her artistic endeavors. At times, I became embarrased by the movie, and felt awkward in that I had asked my wife to watch it with me. It is one dumb plot, never beginning to connect with even 1950 reality. Centered around making pajamas in a union shop, moronic management is fighting wimpy workers led by Doris Day (rightfully fired for performing industrial sabotage), who falls in love with one of the enemy managers, singing songs while prancing around the factory. I Love You Doris, and I believe you should buy up all existing copies of this film and burn them.

Summary: "I got.....sssssssteam heat..."
Review: I saw the movie two days ago, the story is pretty lame. But the production numbers are great. Check "Steam Heat" performed by Carol Haney and chreographed by Bob Fosse. It's really someting else!!!! and also "Hernando's Hideaway". The production number compensates for the weak and cheesy story.

Review: I was disappointed it was not in Stereo, as I recall the VHS version was in Stereo, and I was very surprised the DVD was not, actually it was one of the reasons I purchased it.

Summary: Heartwarming Musical
Review: I would have given this favorite musical 5 stars if the DVD were really special. As it is decent, no extras, 4 stars are justified. Having said that, this a very welcome DVD indeed. The Ross & Adler score (same team that brought us "Damn Yankees") is tuneful with great singing and dancing (thank you Fosse) from everyone. I never get tired of Pajama Game because it is timeless. Sure, no one hardy ever wears pajamas anymore, that's the nostalgia aspect about this musical that is so endearing. An Old fashioned love story surrounding a factory labor dispute makes for good theater with a lot of laughs to boot. Hopefully more musicals will be released, like "Calamity Jane" (another Doris Day gem) and "Damn Yankees" (another Adler & Ross gem) Bravo!! Highly Recommended!
