Review: this movie couldn't have been more well made. It's even tied with West Side Story!

Summary: Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons are terrific!
Review: I am a huge Broadway musical fan, and I think Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons are wonderful in this movie. They have great chemistry, and their acting is first rate. As matter of fact, Broadway.com's review of the DVD states "casting of Marlon Brandon as Sky Masterston [is] a risk that pays off" and "Jean Simmons' Sarah is definitive".

Vivian Blaine is a riot as Adelaide, and you can't beat the Frank Loesser score.

And YES that is Jean Simmons voice. She was *not* dubbed. If you listen very carefully, you can tell it is her. As a matter of fact, four (4) songs from the movie are included on the digitally re-mastered 2000 re-release of the original Broadway cast recording. The re-release was in celebration of the 50th anniversay of the musical.

Summary: Work of Art
Review: Guys & Dolls is a fantastic blend of romance comedy and music. This is a work of art by Marlon Brando. The tunes such as Luck Be A Lady Tonight and Guys & Dolls are catchy and addictive. I would recommend this and if someone could find the "Once on this Island" VHS.

Summary: Good Movie. Good Transfer.
Review: Despite the sets that are so surreal they seem almost Daliesque, this is a very enterating movie.
Frank Sinatra is perfect in his role as gamble and hood Nathan Detroit (perhaps because the character so perfectly parallels the image most have of Sinatra). Marlon Brando is dashing as hihg-roller Sky Masterson and his voice is even passable in his singing parts.
The lead female characters are the best, however. Jean Simmons plays the prim, proper mission operator with a rumbling volcano of sensuality underneath.
Vivian Blaine steals the show with her hysterical portrayal of Nathan's perennially put off fiance.
With the exception of the sets that are occasionally distracting, it's a wonderful film.

Summary: Brando enunciates!
Review: This is my second-favorite movie of all time, the first being SINGIN' IN THE RAIN. (All my favorite movies are musicals.) Unlike some other reviewers, I think the casting in this movie is perfect! I can't think of anyone who could have done a better job in any of the roles. This is the only movie in which I ever really liked Marlon Brando. He's very attractive and winning, and he doesn't mumble. Frank Sinatra is as perfect for this role as he was for the role of Maggio, though in a different way. There's not a bad moment in this film.

Summary: My kind of people
Review: Alas, if the so-called underworld could be like this. It's practitioners walk around dressed very neatly. They have the best of manners. And they speak in dialogue that would make any English teacher proud, even while trying to score a deal, ... the public, or even each other.

On the other hand, some elements do ring true. Not that I need such things in Las Vegas, but your average bookie account consists of verbally setting up a line of credit based on 'friend of a friend', and numerous high-dollar transactions enacted weekly. Over the phone! Try getting this service from your local bank.

This whole world is brought alive very colorfully in one terrific musical. Maybe this was the underworld of a long-time ago, and maybe this world never really existed. But it's captured forever in this wonderful time capsule of just about everything Frank Sinatra represented. The world that centered around the night-club. Where women were certainly not equals in their world, but arguably ultimately held the aces, as the song 'A Guy's Only Doing It For Some Doll' speaks wisdom with.

And Marlon Brando. The guy once again shows how he was potentially the greatest actor of all time before becoming a beached whale. The guy can't really sing, but he sings well enough here. He also isn't a dancer, but seems to effortlessy pull off the job. And he keeps just the right mystique about his character to add to his legend.

There's a handful of really good songs here. They have the best of the comedic character actors of their time. And even though it's a studio set, how realistic does it have to be when all the action takes place on street corners anyway? They don't make 'em like this anymore, and that's bad.

Summary: Good Film But Would Have Been Better With a Different Cast
Review: Guys and Dolls was a good film but could have been much better with a different cast. Many dance numbers and songs had to be cut from the movie because this particular cast (Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons) didn't have the singing and dancing talent necessary to make this movie what it should have been. Brando's doesn't do a bad job, but not a great one either. He's not a singer or dancer. Simmons, who is suppose to be a great actress, looks stiff and phoney in her singing numbers in the beginning of the movie and is off in her lip-syncing. Simmons improves in the show's later singing numbers, but she still can't do justice to the role. A talented singer like Shirley Jones would have been ideal for this role. Frank Sinatra is good, but the one who steals the show is Vivienne Blane, who plays Nathan Detroit's (Sinatra) girlfriend. Vivienne played this role on Broadway and repeats her outstanding performance in the movie along with a lot of the supporting cast. Five stars to Vivienne and the supporting cast. Thumbs down to Brando and Simmons. And a luke-warm rating to the movie in general.

Summary: Guys and Dolls PLEASE!
Review: I have only some of this movie and I LOVE it! My production choir class performed this awesome musical, and our teacher says it's the best musical our school has ever done. (I played Lt. Brannigan, and I felt proud to be part of this fantastic piece.) I only wish that I can see the rest, so I can see what I'm missing out...

Summary: Wonderful film! By the way, let me clear something up....
Review: JEAN SIMMONS DOES HER OWN SINGING. (I HAD to say that *grin* It' true) ...

Next, this is an extrememly entertaining film with memorable songs, funny dialect and an engaging story. The casting was good, especially Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. Yes Brando does sing, but it isn't *gulps* that bad....

Enjoy!
