Summary: Fabulous Film!
Review: A young boy named Bill is growing up in a small English town during the beginning of World War II where the the outlook toward the war is extremely optimistic and glorified. As Bill's family faces the departure of his father who is going to war, Bill has to handle the boys in the neighborhood who lack fatherly supervision. This creates an atmosphere of freedom and rowdiness where Bill faces new adventures with boys while the women are temporarily freed from their husbands. However, the reality of the war becomes very real when bombs begin to drop around the neighborhood. Hope and Glory is a semi-autobiographical story by John Boorman that captivates the audience, but the story feels a little choppy as if something where missing in the film. Nevertheless, it is a solid cinematic experience that will keep many thinking and laughing.

Summary: One of my favorite WW 2 movies!
Review: As a person that loves books set in WW 2, I almost knew that I would love "Hope and Glory." The movie by John Boorman tells the story of seven year old Billy Rohan (Sevastian Rice Edwards) and the coming of the second world war changes his whole world. Also in the cast is Sarah Mills and Sami Davis(who would be on the ABC show Homefront, about post WW2 America) This is one of my favorite movies that I enjoy watching over and over.

Summary: Life in war through th eyes of a child
Review: Boorman, portrays a young British boy through the part of his life that is the hardest. This movie goes through the beginning of WWII when war is first declared on the radio until they are finally thanking Hitler at the end. Having many funny and difficult scenes, you really feel the boys feelings. If you don't understand how hard life was during that time, definetely get this movie.

Summary: Britain at its Best
Review: Firstly, in answer to the 'Viewer from Northern Ireland', no, this is no 'Ptang Yang Kipperbang', which, incidentally, has an AKA which I've forgotten, and it's an early, but memorable work of another British director. 'Hope and Glory' is, I think, Boorman's master-work. The second World War is seen through the eyes of a young boy, both in London and nearby in the country. There's so much to say in praise of this film: the story-line never flags, the cast beautifully 'in synch' with one another in restained but 'spot-on' performances, cinematography rich, editing powerfully highlighting ironies, music especially appropriate. The whole is rich with dramatic conflict, poignancy and humour. It's really a film not to be missed.

Summary: if i could give it no stars i would
Review: having to watch with school for english classes was like watching plants grow hair. it has absolutley no story line what so ever and it is absolute dribble, john boorman wasted a lot of time making a film about.. practicly nothing. sure it gives us a taste of what it was like in world war two but it has no point, no plot, and nothing interesting to look at. i have to agree with mike that giving yourself an enema with a garden hose would probly be alot more enjoyable than watching this crap. dont waste your time and money looking in at other peoples lives, its got no relavence what so ever, go out and do somthing usefull, like make a film people will actually enjoy watching

Summary: Hope & Glory is one of the best WWII movies ever.
Review: I first saw H & G years ago and immediately fell in love. It hasn't the gore so common in war flicks but it tells the story of one English family during the Blitz with compassion humor and a strong sense of truth. If you like the personal stories of life during wartime (and you're a fan of English humor) you'll love this movie. Buy it. . . it's a movie you'll want to watch more than once.

Summary: A Unique Classic
Review: I first saw this film when I was about 12 years old when my parents had rented it and it had stayed with me for my entire life. So much in fact I was compelled to find it after I had forgoten the title and I proceded to drill my English boss for the title. Eventually after some searching I found the movie and I enjoy it fully. The film is like few others I have seen in my young life and even though the accents are hard to understand the mood of the film carriers you. War movies and biographies have always been a hobby of mine but this movie goes beyond the traditional war film as it dives into the effects on the general population and children. It is a tremendous film with something for everyone (Humor, drama, etc.) and in my belief a film many Americans should view in order to understand something which we have never seen up close.

Summary: A Keeper
Review: I have owned this movie for years and I cannot recommend it enough. Watching it the first time may be a little difficult-- the accents are so thick!-- but it stands up well to repeated viewings. It strikes me that "Hope and Glory" more successfully achieves what Spielberg was attempting with "Empire of the Sun"-- to portray coming of age in a time of war. Boorman, to his credit, relies less on spectacle than on period detail and a real knack for working with young actors to express this theme, and does a beautiful job.
