Summary: This movie sucked
Review: Sorry, but this movie sucked. It was goofey as hell and the songs were God-awful. They were about nothing. There were songs about HAMBURGERS for God's sake. C'MON!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Funny, musical, and true to the original spirit of Popeye.
Review: This is a beautifully interlinked movie. Searching the world for his longlost father the always independently irreverent (but gentlemanly) Popeye swaggers into our lives with all the glory of his convictions and his mispronounced words. Specifically tailored to look just like a cartoon come to life (not unlike the movie treatment of "Dick Tracy" in this respect) "Popeye" is more colourful than life, more ridiculous than life, larger than life, and contains more coincidences in the plot than you could ever expect to find in life. The songs are an integral part of the plot and the enjoyment of the viewing, many carrying meanings and underlying strengths that can be applied to any household. (My personal favourite being the song that starts off with "It's not easy being me.") Throughout the story, tiny details unimportant to the plot itself add to the intricate beauty of it. Look, for instance, for the brief visual comment on barbershop quartets and the simple elegance of the gadget that produces it; and the bare effectiveness of the Oyl's house after Olive has lost favour with the villian, Bluto. Thank you very much for showing us where and how Swee'pea entered Popeye's life. One question: I understand the word play in the names of Olive, Castor, and Coal Oyl, but what is Nana Oyl?

Summary: Wonderful
Review: It's not only really funny, it's just flat out cool to look at! The detail in all the characters and the town is just amazing.

Summary: One of Robin Williams best!
Review: Robin Williams once again uses all his fantastic acting skills! All the characters have been perfectly cast. Even people who don't like musicals will like this one. Robin is Popeye in the flesh, he has brought this cartoon character to life! Very funny and entertaining.

Summary: a cartoon come to life
Review: This is truly one of my all time top 5 favorite movies. Fantastic. If you ever were a fan of the cartoon you will love this movie. Pay no attention to "movie critics" with their noses so far up in the air I am suprised they even noticed. As good as anything out, ranks up there with Wiz of Oz.

Summary: "Popeye" is an intelligent comedy that is enjoyable to all.
Review: I have only ever seen the movie "Popeye" on a scrappy "Beta-"format video tape recording from the television dating from the time of the dinosaurs (Yes, our family had a Beta). I plan in the near future to purchase the VHS version from Amazon.com because it is just a fantastic film, and for so long have I yearned to see it in its entirety with clear picture and sound. Robin Williams is the best comic actor borne of woman, and the entire cast works together in a seamless fashion to present a humorous, intelligent film with the feel of a comic book, which, of course, is the basis of the film. I would recommend "Popeye" to anyone.

Summary: Excellent! I love this Movie.
Review: As the before reviewer also said, this was one of my first movies to watch, and after 16 years has become one of my all time favorites. We have rented Popeye more times than any other movie. We couldn't buy it before now because it is a hard movie to find - but not any more. Finally I hope to add this film to our 300 movie collection. AND DONT LISTEN TO THE CRITIC'S they don't know what they are missing. I guess they have no "Imajiganation."

Summary: A Classic
Review: This was the first movie that I'd ever seen, and now 18 years later its still one of my favorites. I mean the charecters look like the one in the comic. The songs are cool too, "I'm mean" still gets stuck in my head along with the Sweethaven national anthem. A great movie.

Summary: Fun Live Popeye!
Review: i agree with justin that popeye is a comic masterpiece, who else could have played popeye i can't think of anyone . though it maybe chaotic it's alot of fun to watch & one of my childhood favorites also one of the ones that got me interested in music strangely enough. robin williams is a genius when it comes to character roles , popeye is perfect for him & Shelley duvall steals the show as olive oyl along with a cast that made a fan out of me. So Mr. Altman should'nt write this film off his list he should keep it you've got a fan, mr. altman i'm glad you directed popeye another director probably would have really messed it up thanks keep on making fun films. ahhghhh well blow me down!

Summary: "Somebody owes me an apology!"
Review: The "Somebody owes me an apology!!" line by Olive's Dad was the funniest running gag in the movie but then they dropped it about halfway through. Big mistake. Great sets and characterizations hampered by misguided plot and inappropriate musical numbers. Great until about halfway through then it falls apart. Definately woth a watch for the Robin Williams Popeye characterization and the great sets. If you like the look and style of flicks like Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy, give it a rent!!
