Rating: Summary: You'll be Offended Review: Don't take this movie so seriously! DeeDee tells you right off that she doesn't grow a heart of gold. THis movie's about the funny, twisted events of a bad girl, not some golden, coming-of-age epic! Christina Ricci is great in this movie, and the writing is hilarious. If you think it's too crude, go watch a Disney movie.
Rating: Summary: Witty and original with excellent performances throughout... Review: I was amazed to see so many one star reviews for this movie which I enjoyed greatly. Ricci turns in a splendid performance and I am amazed that no Oscar nomination was forthcoming. Martin Donovan was splendid as always. A witty and original script with lots of twists and turns. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously and there were some nice directorial touches. Overall I thought it felt a lot like a Hal Hartley movie and fans of his work should check this out.
Rating: Summary: Funny, outrageous, and beautifully woven story Review: I love films that are not formed of the standard hollywood cookie-cutter methods, i.e. I hate McMovies. The Opposite of Sex is anything but. There are a couple of reasons why. 1) The characters are actually interesting! The protagonist is not a likeable character. Why is it that Hollywood feels the need to consistently feed us vanilla characters who are heroes and sympathetic characters? This film breaks that trend--Dedee is a wonderfully malicious, if not completely evil, immoral, and obscene character. Her maneuverings and dialogue are so much fun to see--both for her biting humor and the reactions the other characters have to her. Christina Ricci (as DeDee) obviously had a great deal of fun in playing the role, and her energy is contagious. Though not as vivid, the other characters are very interesting as well. Any fan of Friends and Lisa Kudrow should see this film just to see her in a non-ditsy role. Her character of Lucia, like all of the characters (perhaps save for Lyle Lovett's Carl), are written and played with a great deal of depth and style. None are entirely likeable, but in real life, who ever is? 2) I have not seen a film in a long time that weaves such a complicated humorously soap-operatic storyline with such effortless grace. In the end, all of the characters interrelationships make sense to YOU, but don't try to explain them to someone who hasn't seen the film--you won't be able to! The DVD is packed with features as well. The directors' commentary is very good, for those aspiring filmmakers out there. The deleted scenes were cool as well, especially as they also included director's commentary. WARNING--If you like only the standard wholesome hollywood fare where they guy always gets the girl, you will likely find this movie offensive in its story and dialogue, and not compelling for its characters.
Rating: Summary: Crude and Rude! Review: The opposite of sex should be could the opposite of a good movie. Ricci's character is so annoying and demented that at the end she gets what she deserves. A crude or offensive movie that has a meaningful message, i.e., porcille by Pasolini overcomes its offensive nature. However, Don Roos is no Pierre Palo Pasolini and therefore the movie ends up being simply crude and rude.
Rating: Summary: Christina Ricci comes of age. Review: I rented this movie on the advice of a friend and it blew me away. Lisa Kudrow and Christina Ricci play off of each other brilliantly in this well written dark comedy. For fans of Christina Ricci this is a must have for your movie collection. As the plot twists and turns Christina continually pummels the other characters with her witty and sarcastic narrative. Another appropriate title for this movie would have been "Christina Ricci as Dedee Truit" because she completely dominates the movie from start to end. This quality flick also goes beyond laughs to address societal issues such as forgiveness, teenage pregnancy and ruined friendship. Whether you're a "deep" thinking person or someone just looking for laughs, you won't be disappointed by this scathing comedy.
Rating: Summary: This movie was a surprising letdown. Review: I had been wanting to see this movie for the past two years, and I finally got the chance. Surprisingly, I found it to be a real letdown. It focuses on the life of a teenage girl named Dedee, who visits her half-brother in Indiana, after her stepfather dies. Soon upon arrival, she seduces her brother's gay live-in lover, then later tells him that she is pregnant with his child. From that point on, Dedee spreads bad luck to those around her. Even though some of the actors/actresses played their roles very well, I did not like the flow of the movie. Overall, I thought that it was pretty boring, and I did not like it.

Rating: Summary: "You will laugh, you will cry, you will be offended" Review: That's what it says on the box, and that is probably one of the truest comments I have read on any movie box, ever. I have now watched the movie three times in as many days and still cannot get over it. It literally has something to offend anyone, and I don't offend easily - I actually thought "Blue Velvet" was funny. Christina Ricci is great as Deedee, one of the most unlikable characters you can ever imagine, who does not have a heart of gold and does not only need love to magically transform into a better person. Yet, in some way I am yet to verbalize, you land up liking her (kind of). Martin Donovan as her set-upon half-brother is probably every gay man's (and probably a few straight women's) dream and Ricci's scathing narration concerning him makes him even more so. It is a brilliant performance. Having said that, though, the film almost belongs to Lisa Kudrow as Lucia (no - pronounced like Marcia), whose character portrayal is one of the strongest I have seen in a long time. Her comic timing is almost scarily perfect. All in all the movie is one you are not likely to forget, and I mean ever. This is due largely to the truly excellent script, which should have won an Oscar at least. It offers a perfect platform for the six main characters to launch their altogether brilliant performances. The direction is tight and there is literally not a frame wasted in what is sure to become an absolute cult classic.
Rating: Summary: Christina Ricci's excellent acting talent returns. Review: Ricci plays Dedee Truitt, a 16 year old girl who's caused her family many problems. She's run away from her mothers and moved to her gay brother's house (Martin Donovan). Deedee has stolen his money, stolen his boyfriend, stolen his dead boyfriends ashes and she's pregnant! This is a great story - don't miss it!
Rating: Summary: Devilishly good little comedy! Review: While not the best film of 1998. The opposite of sex does manage to entertain and insult the viewer. People who are interested in the subject matter will like it even more. Lisa Kudrow is hilarious, and so is Christina Ricci in a part that established her as a good actress. I recommend you rent it first. While not for everyone, great script, good directing, great acting and story keep you entertained for a few hours.
