Rating: Summary: A Truely Great Drag Movie Review: "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" Truly one of the "GREATEST" Drag Movies of all time. In Pricilla, it portrays the way an Actual "Drag Queen " Lives there life. The Movie is Full of great laughs, Lots of Singing and Lots of Love. As Three Drag Queens Hit the Road in Australia, to do a Show. On there way they face many hardships, and many trails, and make a friend along the way. If you want Laughter, Hot guys and Lots of Singing i suggest you See "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert "
Rating: Summary: "To Wong Foo..." with bite Review: Though I have never heard due credit given, the Hollywood movie "To Wong Foo With Love, Julie Newmar" is obviously a remake (given the requisite star-power and story-flattening) of this much darker, funnier, and therefore denser and more interesting Australian film. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed "To Wong Foo", especially my "discovery" of the infinitely talented John Leguizamo. But the REdiscovery of Terence Stamp in a more layered and undoubtedly more risky performance than that of Patrick Swazey was like finding out the dumb jock from high school actually has a brain (and a heart). He, like John L., can disappear into a character, and I now see other films simply because Mr. Stamp is in them. Add depth, soul, more interesting story and characters, and a back road tour of Australia to "To Wong Foo..." and you have the much more satisfying "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert". PS: Priscilla is the name our valiant band gives to their bus, which becomes an old Cadillac in the Hollywood version. And though the Caddy is yellow in the movie, if you look at the cover of the video (or the movie poster) you will see it is pink... just like Pricsilla. Now, tell me that it is not a remake.
Rating: Summary: My favorite movie! Full of poignancy, humor and heart. Review: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is my favorite movie of all time. The costumes, songs, and actors make this movie so entertaining, yet the characters have so much depth of emotion and personality that it's not just a shallow comedy. Highest recommendations! (Also, the soundtrack is wonderful!)
Rating: Summary: VERY FUNNY AND UNEXPECTEDLY SERIOUS FILM Review: This movie totally had me in shock. I usually feel uncomfortable with the seemingly obscene way that drag queens have to be thrown into "gay films". For once I would like to see gay men without a queen being thrown in (I don't know any in my life). Yet, I don't want the way overdone "strait acting" guys that have nothing to say, or anything in their souls either. However, I still managed to actually love this movie. Great acting, especially Stamp, and mysterious locations which film beautifully. Great social message without being hit over the head. Hopefully will be available again on DVD.
Rating: Summary: THIS AUSSIE JOCKS IN FROCKS FLICK ROCKS! Review: I think I am probably the only person so far who could write an honest review of this movie. I was born and bred in Sydney, Australia (where "Priscilla" begins), I am a proud, openly gay man (not a drag queen unfortunately....couldn't afford the frocks!) and I have travelled to the country towns that the characters in "Priscilla" visited on their way to the Outback. Firstly, let me say that the movie is absolutely correct! Sydney's Oxford Street (the gay area in Sydney) is choc-full of drag queens and drag acts. Guy Pearce, Hugo Weaving and Terence Stamp should have won awards for their portrayals....they were spot on. In fact, they were better than the acts on Oxford Street. When they were rehearsing for "Priscilla" they all frocked up and blended in with the Oxford Street crowd....and none of us knew! The hostilities these three drag queens face from heterosexuals on their journey to Outback Australia is all true. It actually happens. This is a damn tough country. It's where men are men and the sheep are nervous! I visited Broken Hill (briefly thank God) and was stared at and harrassed for "looking different". I felt very uncomfortable. It's another world out there, a world which I don't really want to visit again. The scenery is very beautiful, but the people (most) are narrow-minded in-breds. The Palace Hotel in Broken Hill really does exist with those horrible murals on the stairwell. And the little Greek man who manages it in the movie actually runs it in real life! I met him. It was like stepping into the movie itself! "Priscilla" was loosely based on a true story. Three Sydney drag queens really did travel by road into the Outback to do a show. Naturally things would be exaggerated for the screen, but when aren't they? I give this movie 6 stars (but there are only 5 to give) for bringing out the message that it's alright to be different....be who you are....and be proud! "To Wong Foo", you tried hard to be a "Priscilla" clone, but you failed miserably. Next time make a film with depth and heart instead of what the Hollywood moguls think gays and drag queens should be like! Footnote: The Imperial Hotel that "Priscilla" opens in really exists as well. It is a gay venue that has now become a tourist attraction because of the success of this film. They even have a cocktail bar there called....wait for it...."The Priscilla Bar". Planet Hollywood, Sydney has the stiletto shoe that Guy Pearce sits in on the top of the bus. Come for a visit Down Under....but don't forget to bring your wigs and frocks!
Rating: Summary: Warning! Not for inmature persons. Review: This is one of the best films that portraits, the life and sad situations of persons with this way of life. They have to survive in a lot of ways of discrimination, aggressions, fobias, and family pressures. Nevertheless, they enjoy life, make us laught of their customs, and shows. It is an opportunity to laught, and cry.
Rating: Summary: Outrageously Funny! Review: Loved this movie! It is filled with love, life, and adventure
Rating: Summary: Incredible Review: Fantastic costuming. Great script/dialogue. Fun music. You'd have to be braindead or heartless to not find this movie, at the VERY least, amusing.
Rating: Summary: Australian Drag Queens- can it get any better??! Review: The reason I initially rented this movie is because Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential) is in this, and I have an enormous crush on that man. But the appeal of 'Priscilla' goes way beyond that. The movie is full of rugged individualists who could teach the American politically correct masses a thing or two! It's flashy, funny, thought-provoking, and immeasurably sweet. Check it out!
Rating: Summary: Aussie gay humor at its best! Review: I learned about this movie from the soundtrack that is available in CD. Gloria Gaynor, Alicia Bridges and Cece Peniston are great gay divas. So I got the DVD and I just squeeeeel with laughter of the drag queens on this movie. And Felicia is just my character. I was just in Sydney for the gay & lesbian mardi gras in february and watch a real priscilla show with delight. With this DVD purchase, I just got myself a souvenir!
