Summary: one and a half stars
Review: I'll start by making a plea for a half star rating option. As is, I have to give this the same rating I gave Freddy Got Fingered. At least this film is not a discredit to the human race as Freddy...-it just failed in some major ways,in my opinion. So it gets one and a half stars.

W.H.A.S is more a remake of those old teen flicks than a parody. At times it tries to draw laughs by deliberatly being unfunny-it's nearly impossible to pull off. Sometimes the only way you can tell it's a parody is that it takes a joke past the point of no return and this sort of over the top stuff is also tough to pull off. I could see what they were going for here but it just didn't come together for me. I always thought that the State was a bad tv show but this film proves that there was SOME talent envolved in that show. I laughed a fistfull of times here but it could not make up for the dull and fall flat portions between chuckles (worst of all was that Molly Shannon subplot-ouch). I won't complain about the continuity because I got the joke-it just wasn't funny.

While paying close attention to the minute details of their targets they miss the big pictures. I can't be the only one who sat through those pointless "comedies" to see my early glimpses of naked female flesh yet this simple right of passage is ignored here. There is a scene in almost all of those films where randy teens do whatever it takes to catch a peek and seeing that lampooned would have been funnier than many of the topics selected. Plus, the movies that hinted and teased but never came through were reviled and cursed by yours truly. This film didn't even try to go that route. The biggest picture of all is that those teen flicks were as disposable as kleenex and dismissed by nearly everybody-why lavish such care on a parody that only apes such forgetable work? It was obviously a labor of love for it's creator's but you can see why this one never(or barely) hit the big screen.

The cast does a decent job of trying to pull this film out of the murk but their wattage and ability are not fully up to the task. It would have taken a funnier skript and maybe a better concept, too. At least. What you get is valiant efforts that are wasted on a film that features way too many in jokes, too much playful thievery and alot of go nowhere absurdist humor. A groaner of a disapointment.

Summary: Fine line between clever and stupid
Review: I didn't know The State, and had heard nothing about this movie when I watched it. Can't recall laughing this hard in my 31 years. But it was a strange enough movie to make me wary of recommending it to a lot of people. Its obvious from some of these reviews, that certain people don't consider this kind of thing funny. I'm just happy to see that most of you agree that it's total brilliance. I plan on watching it again many, many times.

Summary: Best film of 2001
Review: It was wicked funny. Like a lot of low-brow comedies, the basic idea of the movie was to make every scene funny. Usually these movies more occasionally, but most of the jokes fall flat. The reason why this one worked so well was, quite simply, 'cause almost all of the jokes wre hilarious. The extended drug scene gave me stomach cramps it was so funny. Even actors I've never liked before like Garafalo and that dude from "Frasier" were funny. Must admit, I've never seen "Meatball's" or other films it parodies, so I can't verify it's originality. Maybe it rips off all it's goof jokes from other movies, as a couple reviewers have suggested. Then again, that's post-modernism for ya, ain't it? If it's true that "there is nothing new under the sun," than ya might as well recycle the best of the old. I would recommend the movie to all college aged and 20 somethings.

Summary: Not as funny as you would think
Review: Being a fan of The State, I figured I would enjoy this one a lot. Not to mention the rabid endorsement of a friend who claimed he "laughed from beginning to end." Well, I am admittedly no huge fan of lowbrow late 70's/early 80's sex-comedies, so perhaps I'm biased, but the bulk of this film seemed predictable and trite. There isn't enough space in this review to note all of the in-jokes, homages, and sight-gags that are ripped directly from the films it parodies, but the trouble is that very little of it is actually funny. Sure, I found myself "getting" the jokes, but most of my laughter came at the expense of a well-timed F-word, not any genuine appreciation of the attempt at humor.

In a strange way, the movie almost turns on itself, as the viewer gets so accustomed to expect the unexpected. In parody, it isn't good enough to simply reference earlier material, but that's ultimately what happens in this film: scene after scene cobbled together, as if a group of aging Gen-X'ers were sitting around a rec-room reminiscing about how "those geeks always hated camp!" or "those jock guys were always hooking up with those slutty girls!" It's true, perhaps insightful, but not especially humorous or funny... just like this movie.

Summary: Funniest Movie I've Seen in Years!!!
Review: This movie was hysterical! my throat hurt from laughing so hard. I can see how some people may find it "unfunny" or "horribly disgusting", but to those 5 people I say, come on!!! This movie rocked! I loved the State when they were on MTV, so when I heard they made a movie, I jumped at the chance to watch it. It was everything I dreamed it would be and more. And the very best of the best is the ending. Absolute genious. And the DVD has all the extras that made me laugh even harder. I couldn't believe what they did (the reunion). Funny as funny can be. I can't wait for their next movie! "They Came Together". a spoof of romantic comedies. And knowing these guys, I'm betting "Came" has a double meaning there. You know what I'm talkin' about. :)

Summary: Sigh...
Review: I had heard so many good things about this movie:
"Cult classic" "Total 80's throwback hilarious" ...
But, I was disappointed.
I love the cast, and I love that most of the cast were members of the comedy troupe/show "The State"...but I thought a lot of the jokes were forced and contrived. The dialogue ( and recital OF the dialogue ) was really weak at times. I wanted to really enjoy it, but I was let down. I will admit, there are definitely some major crack-up scenes. They are few and far between though.

Summary: Not funny at all . . .
Review: I repeat: this movie is not funny. I was recommended this movie and I really hoped it would be hilarious considering the cast, but the jokes are lame and the delivery of these jokes even lamer. A lot of bad, trite writing.

Summary: If you see one movie this decade, make it WHAS
Review: ok, maybe see the lord of the rings and the new star wars, but then head to the video store to pick up this little peice of pure Genius. This movie is so well put together and so absrud that one has no choice but to love it. The characters are well put together and the comedy ranges from slapstick to stuff you really have to think about. I heard about this movie from a freind, I passed it on to a friend, everyone I have shown this too has died laughing. It was a shame this one did not get released nationally at the theater, but you have the chance to watch it on DVD or VHS lucky you

Summary: stinkeroo
Review: I grew up in the 80s and have seen all the summer camp movies. Funny but I never realized this was a spoof as those summer camp movies are all pretty over the top anyway. Maybe I'm dense, but I just didn't find anything funny about this. It playes almost EXACTLY like one of those bad 80s movies. If you want something way over the top watch any Corey Haim movie from the 80s. Don't waste your time with this....

Summary: Hated it
Review: I didn't realize this was supposed to be a parody when I went to watch it--I just thought it was a bad 80s movie which I guess was the point, but it wasn't bad enough to be funny to me I guess. I felt like the only way this movie would be enjoyable was if I was 18 and stoned out of my mind.
