Rating: Summary: Round is Good Review: Bubble Boy is supposed to be a movie about a boy who is born without an immune system and thus can be killed by a single germ. If you believe that, you may also be one of those people who believe it is also a remake of the Travolta film. It isn't. Sure, that is the basic pretext of it, but the real story here is about overcoming obstacles, being who you want to be, taking risks, following through to the very bitter end even if you think the end is not going to be any good . Like the ending to this movie.Bubble Boy is a good movie for what it is: a kind of slapstick comedy. It sure in hell wasn't as goofy as I thought it was going to be. It was tender and sweet. In many ways it reminded me of Pee Wee's Big Adventure (which for Paul Reubens after his child porn case comes to trial might be Pee Wee's Big Adventure in the Jail House). Jake Gyllenhaal plays Bubble Boy, the poor kid who grew up in a plastic bubble with nary a friend until the sweet Chloe (played by Marley Shelton) moves in next door and becomes his companion. Due to his physical limitations, their relationship never blossoms beyond friendship and he is unable to tell her how he truly feels about her so she goes off to marry a scumbucket. The story is a hero's journey, kind of, as Bubble Boy treks across the country via a bus driven by a cult led by Fabio, a motorcycle, a scooter, freight train, ice cream/curry truck, taxi cab, and finally biplane. It is stupid fun. Along the way he meets up with all sorts of people, all weird and wonderful in their own special way. There aren't a series of lessons, thank god, only one big obvious lesson at the end as he takes the final risk, taking off the bubble suit, risking his life, in order to kiss the woman he loves.
Rating: Summary: This movie is great Review: What would you do if you didn't have any immunities? Probably live inside a bubble. That's the life of a young man named Jimmy--if he leaves his bubble, he'll die. Jimmy's perfectly content in his own little world--he thinks there is only one magazine in the world (his mom's a little protective) and only one TV station, so what does he have to worry about? Then the girl comes along. Jimmy falls for Chloe, the girl-next-door. When she leaves for Niagra falls to get married, Jimmy feels he must stop her, and makes a travel-bubble that will allow him to experience the outside world. I couldn't help but laugh at Jimmy's naivety, at all the experiences he has as he sees the real world for the first time. On his way to Niagra falls he meets many people and does many things, and some of these things are downright funny. The story is touching, the capers are hilarious, and poor, ignorant Jimmy is nothing short of lovable. This is a great comedy with a good story and a happy (if somewhat cheesy) ending. Go bubble boy!
Rating: Summary: Funny movie Review: This movie is Laugh out Loud funny.
Rating: Summary: Suprisingly intelligent yet Goofilicious! Review: Too many times are funny movies, comedians, ect... sacrificed to the alther of Political Correctness. I think this movie is one case. The main character in this movie, played extreamely well by Jake Gyllenhaal is a victim of an auto immune disease that makes him unable to live outside his artificial plastic room his parents of built for him. Sounds depressing? Well it isn't, his mother, a neurotically clean, religeous, uptight lady played by Swoozy Curtz and his father are the perfect foil to the main characters naive charm and goofy attitude. When he first meets the sexy neighbor girl that he has been staring at for years he thinks that the proper way to greet her is as "The Whore next door" since thats all he's ever heard her called. They slowly become friends and there are several great scenes as when he dresses up as a gold fish swimming in a bowl for Halloween. You also start to get the idea that she is attracted to him. However, she eventually starts dating a motorcycle riding tough guy who has no redeeming qualities and goes off to Niagra falls to get married. this is where the road film takes off. The main character gets into his bubble suit to try to prevent the wedding, I won't go into ever great joke, situation, or character actor, although I could spend several minutes on the hilarious scene when he is picked up by a cult. He eventually makes it to niagra falls but the journey was the great part of this film Suffice it to say that if you liked something about Mary, The Big Lebowski, and Rat Race, you will love this film. If you didn't like those movies, then by all means, agree with the PC police, make a comment such as "How can they make a film about this, that is terrible" and do not see this film.
Rating: Summary: Bubble Boy: One of the Best movies of 2001!! Review: Okay, Bubble Boy is funny. There's just something about it. It's just a shame that it was overshadowed by 9/11 (we will never forget). You have to see this movie. My mother says that it is one of the funniest movies she's ever seen, and that Jake Gyllenhaal is "pure comic genius". He was perfect for the role; he just gave off this innocence, perfect for the role of Jimmy Livingston. You are truly missing out if you don't see this movie. See it, and own it. That's all there is to it.
Rating: Summary: A Lemon! Review: Some parents are so protective that they would like to stick theri kids in a giant bubble.Thats exactly what Jake's mum does.Chasing the girl he loves he takes off in a bubblesuit...But I have got to tell you,I loathe this movie. If you want to watch a really funny, good comedy, choose just about anything else!!! This is weird.
Rating: Summary: A GREAT LAUGH Review: I had watched Jake G in another movie (Donnie Darko) and thought his acting was outstanding so when I realized he was the guy from Bubble boy I had to check it out. I laughed through the whole movie. YES! it is on the dumb/psych gag humor side but it comes across well as a good laugh for a change from the norm. It does seem a bit like an "It's been done before" movie but it has some good twists and to this day I can still hear chicks in bars yelling "500 dolla!" and it cracks me up. If you haven't bought it, buy it now.
Rating: Summary: It's a whole different world out there Review: Little over a year ago, on a typically hot, steamy summer day, I recall seeing the previews to what looked to be a hilarious movie called "Bubble Boy". I knew right away that whether I would see it at the theater or would wait for it on cable, that I had to see it one day in the future. Today, I finally saw the movie. Was it worth the wait? Well, yeah, it was. Before seeing the film and having somebody tell me about actual people who've had to live inside a bubble all their lives, I never even knew that there was a such thing! I thought that it was just a unique idea for a movie. Upon watching "Bubble Boy", it wasn't really what I was expecting it to be. It was a good movie, yes, but not what I would call 'hilarious'. It has a few parts that made me laugh out loud, but I was more compelled to see how the bubble boy himself would enjoy life outside of his house and to see if his compelling journey would yield good results in the end. I have to say that "Bubble Boy" wasn't really disappointing in any way. It wasn't as funny as I thought it'd be, but it's still a great movie to watch from time to time. If I have any complaints, it's that 'happy, shiny' group of people that won't leave the bubble wonder alone; they get on my nerves. If you're a fan of entertaining movies, especially ones that present a sort of realistic idea and add a little bit of fiction and comedy into the mix, give "Bubble Boy" a chance. I recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Fabio and a Bubble Kid...How could this NOT be funny? Review: Ah man! This movie has it all: a singing, happy psycho-brady bunch cult, old people, a Hindu ice cream man, the mini-me guy being tossed around, a guy in a bubble, and Fabio. I apologize to all the people who missed this one because it slipped by through the theaters and to video without anyone noticing because everyone's so PC-friendly, but the truth is, this movie was made by Disney. I don't want to get too deep about the movie because if you want substance, this certainly is not the one for you, but it's also not as shallow as it seems...there is substance in it, amazingly, thanks to the acting chops of the Bubble actor; he did a good job humanizing the wierdo. It's cleverly written, cleverly acted, and man, did I mention Fabio is in it? I bet even Disney was surprised it was funny and then I bet Disney was even more surprised it did lousy. Don't let the concept scare you, it's on the floor funny in the tradition of Rat Race (not that Rat Race was so great, mind you), Road Trip, and Zoolander. It the perfect friday night movie...I recommend, I recommend! Oh, one last thing, there's a girlie mud wrestling thing with the bubble boy...curious? yes, the irrevent humor of it all! Go rent, then buy. (moment of seriousness: it really is a very funny movie, i think even Ebert liked it...didn't he?)
