Summary: Unfunny but not offensively so. Simply no laughs.
Review: Okay, the teen sex comedy of the '80s never took itself seriously, so undertaking a satire of the genre is a challenge in and of itself. The makers of this film do NOT pull it off. Those responsible for this film are Michael Showalter and David Wain of MTV's "The State." "The State" was a magnificently unfunny sketch comedy group who had/have a cult following amongst 15 year olds (who are now in their early '20s). I should've known that if I wasn't into "The State," I probably wouldn't be into "Wet Hot...," but I decided to give it a chance due to the wealth of comic talent in the movie (Janeane Garofalo, Amy Poehler, etc.). It is not an excrutiating movie, the kind you get angry at that it's so bad. It's simply not funny. I waited for laughs and inspired comedic setups. I didn't get any. I saw the movie indulging in what it thought were cracker-jack comic set pieces, but, man, did they misjudge the quality of the humor. Again, this movie is quite thoroughly unfunny. Good recent film comedy for this reviewer is "Bowfinger," "Waiting For Guffman," "Brain Candy," the first "Austin Powers" film (NOT the insipid sequels), and "South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut." Heck, I'd even give "Rat Race" a better rating than this, and THAT was no great shakes, either. Those who wish to see something truly funny are directed to the DVD release of "Mr. Show with Bob and David." As you can see, I'm in the minority here - humor is, of course, totally subjective, and many other reviews on this site are positive. I can only say that "The State" also had a smallish, devoted cult following and was so bad it couldn't cut it on network TV (CBS, to be exact). Marshall Applewhite's Heaven's Gate also had a smallish, devoted cult following. Perhaps watching this awful film inspired them all to check out.

Summary: Very Surprising hit...
Review: Monty Python meets Hot Shots meets Naked Gun meets American Pie....This movie has a little bit of all sides of humor from the whitty ones to the vulgar, so disgusting ones, to the ones that are just so goofy and absured you have to laugh...i used to love the state but thats not what attacted me to this movie, rather it was just a pleasant surprise when i saw most of the states cast was in this and also two of them directed it...top 10 comedies of all time and i really dont see how this movie didnt catch on more although its definetly quickly becoming a cult favorite..look out for the town scene, hits you by surprise, very funny stuff if you get the way its supposed to be funny...awesome movie, highly reccomend!!

Summary: Fondue Cheddar
Review: If you are old enough to remember the summer camp movies of the late 70's - early 80's, or discovered them thanks to video and cable, then you will probably get into this 2001 spoof on the genre. You'll understand what things mean. If you are oblivious to "Meatballs" and the ilk, then stay far away from this movie, unless you have an open mind. It's odd, but also hysterical and spot on. The movie centers around the last day at camp at Camp Firewood, circa 1981. The camp councelors are planning on the best day ever, which will also conclude with a talent show at the end of the day. In the meantime, we are introduced to a slew of oddball characters, each with their own thing. The camp director is played by Janeane Garofalo, who has the hots for a science professor living nearby, who is played by "Frasier" star David Hyde-Pierce. Then there is the typical shallow, ladies man creep councelor played by Paul Rudd("Clueless"), who is more occupied with the ladies and making out than he is with being a councelor, which would explain why some of his charges have a nasty habit of drowning(which is hysterical in it's own right). It doesn't stop there. The usual cliches we see in these films are all played out here. There's the cool cat guy with sex on his mind who's always bragging about the women he's been with; The total dweebs with Dungeons And Dragons on their minds who are referred to as the 'indoor kids', and so on. Then there's the story of the nerdy guy who has the hots for the sexiest girl at camp, but she is with the Paul Rudd character. We saw this coming, but so did the filmmakers, and that's just part of the spoof. The hot girl who gets to know the nerd and realizes that he's the one for her. I've saved the best for last. Christopher Meloni("Runaway Bride", "Law And Order:SVU"), plays Gene, the rough, shell shocked vietnam vet, who is the camp chef. He's the best of the bunch. Coming across as all butch and a tough guy, but always let's slip at the end of something he says that makes one wonder about how 'manly' he is. It's laugh out loud funny. There's more, but I'll save it for you to find out. What I like about this movie is how it really seems like a 1981 summer camp movie. The kids here were all well picked out. They look like normal, average kids that you would always find in the movies this one is making fun of. The girls are cute, but not overly pretty. The nerds really look like genuine nerds. It isn't like today's movies where the kids would normally be tremendous looking and seem to of just stepped out of a show on the WB. Not that I'm knocking that. They are all good too. The movie does lose steam towards the end and starts to unravel at the seams. It becomes quite odd, really. It didn't fit with the rest of the film at all. The actors all deliver perfect, dead on comedic performances. They all seem to really know what they are doing and what they are going for. It's obvious that this was probably a fun movie to make. I must warn you about an out there sex scene in the film. It's not what you were expecting, or wanted to see. Let me just say that it's not m/f. Also be on the lookout for a dandy of a scene involving councelors having a good time going into town. Again, like the sex scene, it's not the happy, fun time montage you would of thought you would be seeing. The movie was basically unoticed and most people don't know it even exists, but it's one of those secret, unheard of films that will gain a definite cult following. The ending was a let down, but I sure had a fun time getting there.

Summary: Starts out normal, then really gets weird
Review: This is one of the strangest and funniest movies I've seen in a long long time. It is a parody of 70s and 80s summer camp movies but it doesn't feel like a parody in the beginning. The first 20 minutes or so feel exactly like the movies it's parodying with a few odd subtleties. Then suddenly the movie switches into spoof mode with some of the funniest and most bizarre scenes I've ever seen.
The town scene alone is worth the price of admission.

Summary: You must watch this movie when you're baked........
Review: This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It helps if you are high, but anyone that appreciates good comedy will really like this movie. Its absurdity is the humor, so it might be lost on some people that don't find shows like "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" funny. If you like Conan, Mr. Show with Bob & David, etc. definitely check this movie out. If you think that Jay Leno is funny, not only should you be shot, but you won't like this movie.

Summary: Surgeon General Warning: This movie[is not good]!!!
Review: It is Friday night, and while I should be immersed in some good ol' fashioned whiskey drinkin' and butt kickin' at my local saloon, I am not. I am sick like dog and I think there's a correlation between my illness and having watched this movie. I thought it was a funny idea- a spoof of the teen summer camp genre, but unbeknownst to me the hilarity stopped there. The only time I laughed was when my roommates and I said how much this classic blew....Avoid this screen gem at all costs, it may be carcinogenic.

Summary: the new way
Review: This is really a very great movie, and is destined to be a cult classic. I think that the reviewer(s) who said that intelligent people would be above the jokes is mistaken, and it turns out that the jokes were above them. It seems very clear to me that the humour in this movie (like the better part of good humour for the last half of a century) is all about surrealism. I think to really get the jokes in this movie, one should probably be familiar with the works of Luis Bunuel, and of course the later and more mainstream-comiedic Montey Python. Now, of course all of these intelligent jokes are hidden behind a veil of seeming stupidity and childishness, but I think that's part of the beauty of the film. People who consider themselves too intelligent to enjoy sillyness end up missing out because of their pretentiousness, while the ones with the real brains, and the confidence to enjoy them, get to laugh for the entire duration of the movie without prejudice. I have the tendency to believe that all of the people involved with making this movie are not only hilarious, as one can tell from watching it, but also extremely intelligent.

Some of my favourite parts in this movie are the ones that make the least sense rationally. eg. There is one scene where a character's hair style changes drastically in the time it takes to pan the camera from left to right. The irrationality of this sort of thing is utterly hilarious and is to be embraced. It brings back memories of the rooster scene from Los Olvidados.

So, in closing, watch this movie once or twice, and open your mind to the jokes. You'll be glad you did.

Summary: Rolling on the Floor Laughing!
Review: I happened to see this movie for the first time by chance one evening while flipping through the movie channels. I was immediately pulled in by the hilarious absurdity of the scene (one of the camp counselors jumps out of a raft of kid campers and leaves them drifting down the river so that he can fetch another camp counselor who knows how to better navigate the waters and is running back to camp with plans to get laid). Everything is so ridiculously funny; it leaves your face hurting from smiling and laughing! Because of the 80's theme, I initially thought that this was an older movie that I had somehow missed. It initially reminded me of some of Monty Python's work (e.g. in "The Holy Grail" when the dark knight loses one limb after the other yet continues to live and fight). The movie was such careless, refreshing, comic entertainment that I have been recommending it to all of my friends!

Summary: A Talking Can of Vegetables
Review: I'm am still confused about this movie, it's flirts with genius but never actually commits. You may wonder whether or not the jokes are irreverent or just stupid, I think it depends on the viewer. If you're too smart the jokes are beneath you but, if you are a fool the myriad of pop culture references and homages will leave you befuddled. For such a large cast there are surprisingly few recognizable names and faces. Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce and Molly Shannon are the only people you may every see outside of this movie. One subplot that is successful in its lunacy is the camp cook who is made to be a sendup of Deer Hunter era Deniro. He mutters violently to campers and his best friend is a can of talking mixed vegetables voiced by the completely brilliant Jon Benjamin (Dr. Katz, Home Movies). If you really want a laugh don't bother watching this movie with the normal dialogue, save yourself the time and watch it with the bonus audio track of Garofalo, the writer and the director, trust me it's way funnier.
