Summary: Mad? Foaming at the mouth is more like it.
Review: THis movie is nuts. There is so much going on here it's hard to describe. A great story coupled witha fantastic cast makes this one of my favorite movies. It's basically a 70's slapstick movie, and if you like those you will love this. Movies such as "the great Race, and "funny thing happened on a way to the forum" come to mind. The characters do everything from driving into rivers to falling off 100 story buildings. THe cahracters in the film travel in sets (husband/wife, friends, cab driver/rider etc.) Each has their own story lines and problems while the go searching for the treasureand These individual storyies interweave throughout the film. Leading up to the end where they all meet up in an explosion of hot tempers and strange circumstances. Phil Silvers is great in this. If you like physical humour and quick one liners, coupled with a hectic fast paced story line,Buy this movie. It's a long one but well worth the time.

Summary: It's a Madly Hilarious Show
Review: In this movie an all-star cast is chasing a hidden teasure with hilarious consequences. It's funny from beginning to end. I wish Hollywood made more movies like this one, today. I also view this movie as an allegory--a humorous version of chasing the American dream. An obsessive desire to get rich by whatever means is mad. This movie is highly entertaining, even though I think that almost everyone would agree that the end is predictable. This is one of those rare movies that you can watch over and over again for the pleasure of watching, knowing full well what the outcome is going to be. This is a classic of world comedy, and as such it is one of the funniest movies of all time.

Summary: Classic Comedy that has never been duplicated
Review: A classic comedy of the 1960's that shows what America would be like if some money was buried under a big "W". In addition to the Blues Brothers, this classic is a personal favorite. Ethel Merman was OK, but Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hackett and Phil Silvers were the funniest. Especially the scene where the wisecracking, con artist , Silvers, double crossed Johnathan Winters. Sid Caesar is great in the movie with his facial expressions. Jerry Lewis's display of comedy talent makes his cameo a classic. One small problem that I had with the movie was the silent cameo appearance by The Three Stooges who didn't speak or slap each other in traditional slapstick fashion that America has grown to love. One of the funniest scenes is Winters battling 2 nerdy gas station attendants and tearing up the whole station. Directors create over-long dramas, why not more classic over-long comedies? Stanley Kramer experimented and this movie is worth every minute of it. I'm a comedy fan and when I saw that the AFI's "100 Years 100 Laughs" gave it #40 out of 100, I was disappointed. It should have been #1!

Summary: Marvelous (although still incomplete) Comedy
Review: This is one of the funniest movies you will find. The credits are a who's-who of comedy and the action is hilarious throughout.

This restoration is the best yet, but alas, the movie has still not been restored to its original length. For those of us fortunate enough to see the movie in its original release, one can only lament the comedy still lost somewhere in some studio or network broom closet.

Still, this version is excellent and can only be highly recommended.

Summary: W
Review: I thought it appropriate to put my review under a big "W".

This is one of my favorites because not only am I a fan of epic, but also a fan of comedies which feature odd, eccentric characters. In case you've never heard of this movie (which is hardly likely), it's about a group of people who are racing one another to get to a park where $500,000 lies buried "under a big W". Like other Stanley Kramer films ("Judgment At Nuremberg", "Ship of Fools"), it boasts a large cast, and one of the main complaints of critics at the time was that it was harder to concentrate on the storyline because the many cameo appearances tend to break your concentration on the action. Indeed, some of the cameos could have been edited and most wouldn't have complained (Jerry Lewis's and Joe E. Brown's are examples of two); also some of the more tedious scenes (like the digging scene in the park - is it me or does that seem to go on forever? - and the scene at the beginning where the whole crew is trying to decide how to divide up the money)

The scenes with Ethel Merman will have you in hysterics . . she is perfectly cast as Milton Berle's loudmouth mother in law (the role almost seems to be a parody of her real self at times) - She really deserved a supporting actress Oscar nod. You'll also get a kick out of Phil Silvers (playing a typical Silvers character, a double-dealer); his scenes with Don Knotts were among the best in the film. Dick Shawn, who plays Ethel Merman's son, helps to pick up the film a little toward the middle when the action starts to drag a bit ("Your baby's coming to SAVE you, Momma!). But the single performer that I thought should have been recast - and many may feel animosity toward me for saying this - was Mickey Rooney. I felt his role wasn't well suited to his talents (personally, I think it would have been interesting if they had cast Jackie Gleason and Art Carney in Rooney and Hackett's roles). But if you're a fan of comedy, period, then this film is a wise purchase - just make sure you purchase the letterbox edition, the pan and scan version is TERRIBLE.

Summary: Hollywood At Its Finest
Review: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is one of my favorite motionpictures of all time. Its all star cast, wonderful script, fantasticdirector, and brilliant musical score makes it one of Hollywood's most memorable films. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was the first big budget comedy ever made!

This "Chase" comedy stars Spencer Tracy as a police chief who has been following the case of criminal Smiler Grogin. When The Smiler crashes his car, some motorists stop to help. Smiler tells them where he has hid the money, and then kicks the bucket...literally! The motorists get in their cars and try to get to the spot first...

Well, I don't want to tell you the whole story, but the movie is hilarious and has an extremely funny "SHE DESERVED IT!" ending.

In all, this long movie is just brilliant. It truly is HOLLYWOOD AT ITS FINEST! END
