Summary: Tap into America
Review: Defying easy description, SPINAL TAP is part documentary, part comedy and part real-life character study. In this "ROCKUMENTARY", filmmaker Marty DiBergi (played by Rob Reiner who also directs) follows the heavy metal band SPINAL TAP as their careers are uncontrollably ending. Always clinging to the past, the boys in the band (including comic geniuses CHRISTOPHER GUEST, MICHAEL McLEAN and HARRY SHEARER) keep challenging the heavy metal beast.

The film was created using improvisation in place of the usual scripting. This gives tremendous believability throughout the film. Watch for BILLY CRYSTAL, BRUNO KIRBY, ANGELICA HUSTON, PAUL SHAFFER, DANA CARVEY and FRAN DRESCHER scattered throughout.

This Criterion DVD has since been overshadowed by a new fully loaded release on a different label. But, this release is a requirement for every fan as well. It has its own unique commentary, the original 'pitch' reel, many deleted scenes and interesting documentary pieces.

This DVD is the second release of the film (following an earlier loaded CRITERION release). But, don't let that fool you. This one is filled as well including many documentaries and deleted scenes as well as a scene specific commentary by SPINAL TAP themselves! A brilliant continuation of character.

Summary: Funny the first time...
Review: The first time a saw "This is Spinal Tap" I almost had a heart attack. It is absolutely hilarious! Although, its humor diminishes upon viewing the movie several times. It is a classic though, so I bought it myself. Every once in a while I can put it on and get some good quality laughs out of it.

Summary: Great Movie with the best commentary track ever on a DVD!!!
Review: The movie is great as the other reviews will tell you, but the best part of this DVD was the audio commentary by Nigel, Derek, and David. They were outraged at Marty DiBergo's portrayal of the band (he makes fun of them), so they decided to use this as an opportunity to tell their side of the story. The end result is a much-needed continuation of the story, with some hilarious moments resembling Mystery Science Theater 3000. You can tell they were just winging it, and it doesn't give a complete update on the bad, which i would have liked, but it's great nonetheless. An included interview with Dibergo is also funny and informative, but the audio commentary is better. This is a first for DVDs as far as I know. I would like to see an MST treatment extra included with all DVDs. It's boring when the director drones on about how great it was to work with all the loser actors or whatever. A "pop-up" option would be cool too, and much more fun than the above-mentioned droning.

in conclusion just go buy the damn thing!

Summary: Such a fine line
Review: There's such a fine line between clever and stupid, and the first time I watched this I thought it was stupid. I have since watched it about six times, and it gets better every time. Give it a couple changes; it is great!

Summary: How do I laugh thee? Let me count the ways...
Review: In its original release, this was a hoot: at work, we extend the jokes about the volume knobs on amplifiers that go to 11 to bikes that go to 11 speeds... In its DVD, the humor continues - - you know the opening DVD menu of "Play"? "Extras"? Well, these guys dissect it in the most hilarious way, and NOTHING is taken for granted. Extras include a voice track where the characters look back at themselves 20 yrs later, plus some outtakes.

Summary: It's like space without the stars...
Review: This is one of the funniest and most clever films ever made. It's writing shimmers and shines with comedic genuis showing most clearly in the hysterical dialog and not to mention the absurdity of the lyrics to such classic songs as, Sex Farm, Hell Hole, and Big Bottom.

Do yourself a favor and have Derek, Nigel, David, and the boys over one night for some good, old fashioned (loud) rock-n-roll.

Summary: Painfully true to life (especially for Status Quo fans)
Review: Any number of British rock bands must squirm with embarassment every time Spinal Tap is mentioned, but none so much as Status Quo who, like Tap, also chased after every twist and turn of 60's musical fashion (yes, even the Summer of Love, psychedelic, frilly shirt momentary aberration), before finishing up as a bunch of sad and pathetic ageing rockers with long hair and socks stuffed down their trousers.
