Summary: Movie has stuck in my mind for years
Review: I saw this movie years ago and forgot its title. I kept telling people about the great moments and the premise -- Michael Caine a bit dimwitted with a rep as a master thief. Couldn't get anyone excited about it, so now I'm going to make them watch the video. The interview with the "king" in the prison bathroom, the mini cars zipping around the Fiat test track, the cliffhanger ending. I was in England recently and the London paper considered this a classic sleeper, possibly cult movie.

Review: Content of the movie is great but transfer of film to video and subsequent tape duplication produced deplorable picture quality. Is this movie going to be released on DVD? If so wait for the DVD version.

Summary: Brit classic
Review: Reminded of this movie when seeing chase scene in recent released RONIN, I first saw this epic when first released in my home country in 1969. Stunned to find the VHS available, the whole movie reminded me of how well simple movies were made back then. Caine was superb, and was Noel Coward. Always thought the ending lacked substance. Having lived in the UK back then and drove a mini, I can assure you it was authentic!

Review: Funny story, pretty girls, exotic cars, breathtaking European scenery. Too bad the Paramount Home Video release(1992) is so fuzzy. Looks like 4th generation dubbing. Thank goodness I could get a clean copy off the cable!!!

Summary: Not art -- better!
Review: Seekers of weighty intellectual film, go ye elsewhere. This is a highly entertaining film for the car enthusiast, or anyone who enjoys a decent farce. The car footage (e.g. the opening scene with the Lamborghini Miura, or the chase through Turin) is good for a laugh. The same is true of the various light comedy in between -- "You were only supposed to blow the bladdy doors off!," for instance. The film also rates for not having a pat ending. I assumed that they had just run out of money, but apparently it was deliberate. Worth a look, but beware the urge to own a Mini that remains after the film is over.

Summary: Quite literally, the best movie ever made
Review: This is a film that has everything. Set in a time when everything was cool along comes Michael Caine playing exactly the type of character he loves to - a cheeky cockney conman. Putting him up against the might of the italian mafia - with a little help from Noel Coward who plays a prisoner with a connection or two - makes for an engaging battle of wits. Add to this the most brilliant piece automotive cinematography that has never been equalled since and you get an exciting and funny film. This is 60's Britain and as close to Cool Britannia as anyone will ever get.

Review: If you know what an Mini Cooper is then you need to get this movie. Even if you don't know what a Mini Cooper is, this is the best introduction to the essential British classic car. Enough said.

Summary: Must see movie for any lover of the "British 60's".
Review: The Italian Job is a must-see movie for any lover of the nostalgic "British 60's" OR for any automobile enthusiast! Although never a major hit in the USA and probably relegated to 'B' movie status in some circles, this movie was always underrated and has a surprising number of very positive attributes. The title song (On Days Like These) sung by Matt Monro is an absolutely lovely and practically unknown love song very typical of the movie music of that day (this song, along with the opening drive through the Alps sequence, is in itself more than enough to justify getting this movie). The 'on location' photography, much of it in the Italian & Swiss Alps, is breathtaking. The number and variety of exotic automobiles used would be enough to make this movie worth seeing for any car lover, but there's so much more. Some of the chase scenes, focused around several Mini Coopers, are still fresh and exciting and unduplicated even today! The plot, very much meant as a farce, is still quite developed and interesting. It pits the British Underground against the Italian Mafia during a very nationalistic time in European history and it's all quite entertaining. Michael Caine, in one of his earliest roles, does a superb job. There is some sexism very typical of the 60's but the movie is quite wholesome by today's movie standards. I HIGHLY recommend that any car enthusiast, anyone nostalgic for or wanting to know more about the 60's OR simply anyone that wants a highly entertaining, well done movie with a decent story line BUY THIS MOVIE!

Summary: REMEMBER STYLE ?
Review: The original ITALIAN JOB is one of those "little" movies that won't go away as it continues to reap the dividends of having been done with panache and style.
Michael Cane's Charlie character is an artist working effortlessly in aloof charm. He's the kind confident character you'll admire like Murphy in CUCKOO'S NEST in spite of the obvious reasons not to. There is seductive music and beautiful scenery and plenty of restrained continental humor.
I have no interest in cars, but even I admitt the classic models of the time featured here are beautiful and add to the ambiance of elegance infusing the scenes .
The chase is more clever than thrilling although the site of four cars performing on the top of a tall rounded building still makes me shake my head when I see it thinking they must have been mad. Remember, no remote control models or studio set ups were used here. That car jumping from roof to roof is real.
Don't come here looking for an action adventure though - it's more adult than that albeit geared for adults of another generation.
Director Collinson's influence makes the movie as good as it could possibly have been. The art direction also contributes strongly throughout. Because this version is so good, I am not tempted to see the remake. Why?
Basically; it must have been pretty impressive then and it's definately fun now. Sometimes all you want is a little fun with a dash of style.
