Summary: Cute and Corny
Review: I was expecting awful things from this movie, but was pleasently surprised when it turned out to be a funny, cute, and soemtimes corny comedy about a group of high school cheerleaders who rob a bank in order to get money for Diane to she can afford her baby. All of the actresses seem to be having the time of thier lives in their roles. Especially Marley Shelton. She is stunning and makes you want her to succeed in robbing the bank. Marla Sokoloff is equally engaging as the B squad member who narrates the story, and has it in for the cheerleaders. However the the other cast memebrs are wasted in this film and are too talented to be doing such a light fluff/corny movie. Mena Suvari is good as the rebel Kansas, and sometimes I got the impression from her that she was like "I can't believe I'm doing this movie". After an amazing turn in American Beauty, she deserves better than a supporting character. I personally would of like to have seen her in the role of Diane. James Marsden is way over the top as the boyfriend Jack. He is so annoying, but I'm sure he wasn't cast in this role for his amazing acting skills. I usually do like him in movies, but he went a little too far with this one. The film has it's cute moments and the robbing the bank scene is quite funny. However, there are numerous pointless and corny scenes that should have been cut.

Summary: Lots of fun!
Review: I enjoyed this movie a lot. I laughed a lot! You will too, if you are looking for something that is delicious and dumb at the same time! But it works. Marley Shelton (Valentine) and James Marsden (X-Men) are great in this movie. Don't miss it.

Summary: What a surprise? I thought it would earn an Academy Award!!!
Review: Disapointing and a waiste of your time! James Mardsen (Disturbing Behavior) plays a high school football player who falls for Marley Shelton ( Valentine) the cheerleading squad captain after she accidentally knocks him out while doing a flip at a prep-alley. After they suddenly elope and she gets pregnant, tehy need some quick cash, so her and the cheerleading squad plan a bank robbery. But, first they must watch tons of bank robbery movies to get ideas. Second, they needs unloaded guns, so they make a deal with a gun-seller to make his skinny daughter into a cheerleader. During the robbery, the laughs happen there and one of the high-school students notices that the girls dressed in doll costumes are cheerleaders after they do a cheering move to spray-paint the cameras. So I about told you the plot! You decide!

RATED PG-13 FOR LANGUAGE, VIOLENCE, SEXUAL MATERIAL.

Summary: sugar and spice anything but nice
Review: never before in my many years of watching movies has a film made me physically cringe. My refrigerator has more talent and charisma than this movie displayed. This film is proof that Britany Spears should never seek an acting career because if she did,we would see more films like these.Cheerleaders all over the country should feel strongly insulted about how this movie depicts them.Just when you thought Battlefield Earth was the worst film you ever saw, nothing could prepare you for this abomination. No sugar,no spice,no talent,no humor,no nothing!

Summary: A wonderful surprise...
Review: As a fan of satire and delicious lines, Sugar & Spice takes the restrained wit of Bring It On to a whole new level.

On the surface it looks like some cutesy film about five cheerleaders who decide to pull off a bank robbery because one of them is knocked up and needs cash. That basic summary doesn't do justice to the slick and often laugh outloud hilarious writing. Once in awhile a rather stiff actor sneaks into a scene (Dave Quimby, the apartment manager for example) but on the whole the main cast hold their own, proving just because it's a movie with teens, it need not be some banal teen movie (American Pie, Final Destination, etc).

From amusing homages to Reservoir Dogs to Madonna lyrics used to justify a decision, this film comes fully packed for the savvy moviegoer. Not since Heathers or the even more brilliant Real Genius has a satirical look at youth been so on the money.

I recall enjoying Kirsten Dunst's Bring It On, but felt the movie hadn't gone far enough. The jokes were good, but hardly biting or smart. Sugar & Spice blows away that "other" cheerleading film with a far sharper eye on teens and parents. No sense in mocking it unless you're gonna pull out all the stops and tear apart every person in your path...from supermarket checkers, to hicks, to parents and cops, not one group escapes unscathed.

Marla Sokoloff's Lisa comes off perfectly as the sweet natured, though not always smart leader of this band. Even better, James Marsden as Jack shows he can actually have a goofy character, capturing the essence of the average clueless high school jock. Marsden's orgasmic shudder after describing a perfect touchdown pass will always call forth a hearty laugh from me. His video co-workers are perfectly cast as well. Diane's parents introducing themselves to Jack's family also comes across as cinema gold. The remaining characters fulfill the whole range of stereotypical high school characters. God bless the writer and director for remaining true to their vision and keeping those stereotyped characters. The whole point of satire is to play it up, not show us a cheerleader who reads Voltaire and ponders Quantum Physics.

I could babble endlessly about how much fun this little gem turned out to be, but alas it would eventually, if not already, come across as redundant. Too bad the DVD's stripped to the bone. I'd love to discover that the twisted folks who can recite Real Genius lines are finding this film on DVD/VHS. Maybe 10 years from now we can get a special edition? Please.
