Summary: Totally Woody!
Review: I saw this film on a flight from LA to Houston. I thought it was typical Woody Allen-very dry humor mixed with great acting. If you like satire, you will love this film, I did! If you are a Helen Hunt fan...this is a must see. She outdoes herself.

Summary: A fun movie
Review: Keep them coming, Woody.
My whole family loved this movie. A witty and well-acted fun movie for all. Right up there with New York Stories, Don't Drink the Water, Manhattan Murder Mysteries, Small Time Crooks, and Everyone Says I Love You. Thanks Woody for another great movie and please keep them coming. You can always bet, Allen's movie will not be a run-of-the-mill, predictable, boring Hollywood type movie. And after all these years of movie-making, he can still make us laugh. Highly recommended.

Summary: Trying to Prove He's Still Got It
Review: It's no surprise that every Woody Allen film has some relatively young (relative to his advanced age) female star falling in love with him. This time, it's Helen Hunt and Charlize Theron. In the past it's been Mariel Hemingway, Elizabeth Shue, Julia Roberts, Juliet Lewis, etc...

If the thought of a man in his seventies making vanity films in which he always scores with young babes appeals to you, this is one you should definitely see. Otherwise, steer clear.

Summary: What happened?
Review: I thought this could've been a great movie. I'm a big Woody fan, but this movie was just boring. Woody's typical brand of humor didn't seem to work in this homage to film noir and the acting was lifeless. None of the actors pulled off a good performance--Helen Hunt, Dan Akroyd--it's like they read their lines and you could tell they were thinking, "hey, it's just a movie." Unfortunately, I couldn't forget this fact either and perhaps this is why I disliked it.

Summary: One of his best
Review: Woody Allen is one of the great America playwrights, and The Curse of the Jade Scorpion is a hilarious example. Of course, it has Woody playing a lead role, and I've noticed that if he annoys someone, a great script, soundtrack, sets and costars, as this has, won't make a difference. The story brings us back to a more innocent America, with Woody as a totally believable gumshoe detective at an insurance company with Helen as an equally believable study of a highly motivated but possibly frigid woman. I hate it when people give away the story and I think another of the reviews here as given away too much, so I'll just say that Helen Hunt does a marvelous job, and next to her, Woody even seems adorable!

Summary: Hysterically Funny
Review: This is the funniest Woody Allen movie in a long time. Helen Hunt is absolutely perfect in her role, with amazing timing and grace. She is extremely professional. This is a well written movie with an awesome cast. I highly reccommend this movie.

Summary: Not the best Woody Allen film, but still worth seeing
Review: This is a film best viewed by long time fans of Woody Allen. The appreciation of his masterful brand of humor virtually depends on one having an enduring relationship with Allen. Almost certainly, most of us are middle aged and saw a Woody Allen film for the first time some 20-30 years ago. Allen shares our history, and knows about the secret neuroses we hide from the world. We all need some sort of therapy, and this great comedic genius won't let us forget it.

The plot of this movie is of secondary importance. Woody Allen prefers focussing on getting the mood right. Indeed, the story revolves around New York City in 1940, but with a little prodding Allen could have easily chosen another era altogether. The hysterical one liners are what makes this film work. I desperately tried to remember each and every funny insult Woody Allen dishes out to Helen Hunt and the other characters. In one scene, the grubby insurance investigator C.W. Briggs (Allen) vows to search out a troublesome detective the rest of his life "in every low I.Q. club in the city." People who fear everyone around them, Briggs later adds, are not paranoid but merely perceptive. Briggs is a male chauvinist pig who feels threatened by the newly arrived woman executive Betty Ann "Fitz" Fitzgerald (Hunt). She is repulsed by the manipulating and disheveled Briggs, and prefers the romantic interests of their boss played by Dan Aykroyd. Matters get out of control after a night club magician (David Ogden Stiers) hypnotizes both Briggs and "Fitz" during a company party. They unknowingly are kept under hypnotic control and later are directed to steal valuable jewels. Is there such a thing as cerebral slap stick comedy? If so, that is perhaps the best way to explain the series of events that thereafter brings out the best and worst in the frolicking characters.

Does Briggs eventually win the heart of his true love? Might he even be able to discover and reveal the mysteries of the universe? Will Allen's alter ego at least be able to resolve his feelings of low self esteem and existential desperation? Oh well, you will have to see "The Curse of the Jade Scorpion" and find out for yourself. This film doesn't quite deserve 5 stars, but 4 and half stars still ain't bad.

Summary: Curses!
Review: Woody Allen is back. And I bet he keeps coming back. He has written and starred in yet another period comedy. Filled with some excellent performances (minus one curiously shallow one by Helen Hunt) and clever dialogue, how can the film go wrong? Well, it must be a curse. It is hard to look at Allen now without worrying he is going to have a heart attack let along bed the 28 year old starlet. Still, Allen does an excellent job making a cohesive production and conveying what he wants from his cast. So, Allen has been stricken with the same curse that afflicts Neil Simon. One where is comedic style and structure becomes so familiar to the viewer, very little is left to surprise.
