Summary: As good as it gets
Review: If you're thinking about buying one movie only - this is the one! A journey trough the world of small&big cons in the mid 30's with an atmosphere you'll get sucked up by. Not a thrilling movie but a tastefull one in the best of ways. The actors are great, straight through. The pokerscene is simply the best of scenes!

Summary: How About a Better Version?
Review: Without a doubt, The Sting is one of the best movies of all time. Newman and Redford at their absolute best with a brilliant script and a tremendous supporting cast. So, why is it that Universal released this on DVD without giving us the widescreen version? What is even more incredible is that there is a widescreen version available on video tape! George Roy Hill was a fabulous director and he really used the WHOLE screen to perfection. Unfortunately, with this version we are missing about a third of the picture on both the right and left side. I hope that Universal will decide to re-release this classic film in the proper format in the future.

Summary: I DON'T BELIEVE IT . . .
Review: Newman and Redford did it again in their fantastic movie "The Sting." I was amazed when I saw "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid." I thought that it was one of the best movies I had ever seen, but this topped that one by a whole lot! I was amazed at the ending. You will never guess, and to see what I am talking about you have got to see this movie. I have seen a lot of movies in my time and I would have to say that "The Sting" is the best movie that I have ever seen.

Summary: How could they do this to such a great movie?
Review: This is not a review of the film "The Sting" by any means. This film is, in my opinion, one of the best ever, certainly one of the best of its time. I am disappointed in the dvd transfer...the video is okay, not great, but why a full-screen presentation? If they were going to present the film in full-screen, it should have been a choice along with widescreen, not forced upon the viewers. I bought this dvd because I love the movie so much, but now I can't stand the dvd. Hopefully they'll release a proper dvd for this film someday.

Review: One of the truly great films of all time but was I dissapointed to see it only in full screen. If you love to watch movies as a TV director sees them, buy this DVD. If you want to see it as the director sees it tell the studio to put out a widescreen version.

Summary: Good movie - bad DVD
Review: This movie happens to be one of my all-time favorites. I was looking forward to seeing it on DVD. Boy, was I disappointed. THE VIDEO QUALITY WAS HORRENDOUS. It was muddy, blurry, and loaded with scratches. Very distracting. I felt as if I was watching a well-used videotape. It's unfortunate that the quality is so poor, as this is fun movie to watch, if only for the colorful recreation of 1930's Chicago. I have purchased many older movies on DVD, and have often been amazed by the image quality (the cult-classic Two-Lane Blacktop comes to mind). In some instances, it was like seeing the movie for the first time. Not so with this P.O.S. In addition, the lack of widescreen is inexcusable, as is the lack of bonus material. In short: Don't be "stung". Avoid this DVD at all costs. Shame on you, Universal Studios.

Summary: The Sting........ Stings Without Mercy!
Review: First I would like to discuss the content of this dvd, which is one of the main reasons why I gave this movie only stars. First of all this dvd edition isn't brought to you in wide screen, which is the major let down; why in the hell Universal Studies didn't put one of their major award winning movies in wide screen in the dvd transition and with any worthy supplemental material, is beyond my imagination! Now lets talk about those special features; almost none, or none worth mentioning. There are the usual subtitle options, which include both English and Spanish; and the usual dubbed language option, which include, besides English, Spanish and also French. I could go on and on about the audio features, but I doubt seriously you would want to read about that. Then there is another common feature; the scene selection feature. I'm surprised, regarding the quality of this dvd, that they actually show pictures of the scenes on the scene selection menu. Ok, now the supplemental material. First of all, if you haven't guessed, the main menu screen is not animated and doesn't even contain any background music at all! The menu screen(s) show blended in pictures of movie characters and rulette tables and such. Then there are prodution notes, which are the cheapest "behind-the-scenes" crap a movie company can buy. "Well at least they have production notes" right? These notes don't even give that much detail about the insights of the movie, it mostly talks about how much of a hit the movie was and how people practically flocked to the movie theatre; "yeah right"! After seeing this film for the first time not too long ago, it surprises me that people loved this movie so much and won so many awards! And last but certainly not least, there are cast bios; which are nothing to brag about. Even with all these features, this dvd just doesn't "cut it"! Don't expect any commentary, don't expect a behind-the-scenes featurette, and certainly don't expect to see a trailer included, which if they had included one, I probably would have added another star! They could have at least presented the film in its original wide screen presentation and added at least one trailer; with just these two things I would've been happier than a "horn dog"! I don't care about that subtitle/multi-language crap, that they can do with out; and even those production notes or cast bios, but I guess because of all these Redford/Newman obsessees they had to include those! Like I said don't expect much fun out of this dvd; even the back cover says it all; says no features, which in itself is a flat out lie, they still have subtitle/multi-language and production notes/cast bios don't they? Now lets talk about the film itself; oh oh! First of all I think this is a sad attempt for George Roy Hill to capitalize on his last hit, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid! Also it is a sad attempt to reunite Paul Newman and Robert Redford! I think this film is highly overrated. Not to say that it isn't good, it has it's moments; for instance the first scene where Robert and company con a guy out of his money; and another scene where Paul pretends to be a drunk with a strange streak of luck at a poker game. As my fellow reviewers have put it; the film is about to con men, Newman and Redford, who avenge the death of a friend by pulling the "con of all cons" against the crime lord (Robert Shaw) who ordered his death. The story is a good story, which is an instant classic, but seems a bit told already. Unless you have a "pea brain" most of the film is entirely predictable. The only real things I love about this film are the visual aspects and costume design. These are the only two things this film should have one oscars for, which they did, not best picture. I don't believe this movie is entirely worthy to bare the Oscar "seal-of-excellence"! Maybe that's why Universal didn't give one of their best award winners a winning dvd transition, because they didn't believe it desrerved it! Again I believe this film is just a sappy attempt to reunite George Roy Hill, Paul Newman and Robert Redford; which is funny why it seems almost similar to their last movie together, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid! Unless you are a collector like I am, buy the film simply because it bares the mark-of-excellence, but don't buy it because you think "it might be good", because it isn't. Stay away from this one!

Review: ...The Sting is completely unworthy of it's Best Picture award. It annoys me to no end that The Exorcist, which is high and mighty better than this film, lost to it. Don't bother with The Sting unless you've got a couple of boring hours to lull around.

Summary: Put it in Wide Screen!
Review: In my opinion, this is the best-made movie I have ever seen. Every scene moves seamlessly from one to the next. It took me several viewings to understand everything that was happening, but that is part of the beauty of it all. THE ONE drawback of this movie is that the DVD isn't in wide screen!
