Summary: Classic Comedy
Review: I do not know why this film got such bad reviews. To this day it is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. The opening sequence is incredible and the movie just gets better from there. I still laugh at it after having seen it umpteen times. So all you critics, lighten up. Enjoy this movie for what it is, a funny laugh-a-minute good time.

Summary: A Classic!!! ACT LIKE YOU KNOW!!!
Review: This to me is definately Eddie Murphys' greatest film. What are people thinking when they knock it?!! It is absolutely outstanding. It may not be the funniest Eddie Murphy flick ever made but so what?! It is an all around fresh movie!!! Don't get me wrong though, I'm in hysterics every time I watch it. If you view it for the mere sake of seeing a good movie and not just a comedy then you'll enjoy it that much more. I think that's what Ed had in mind when he made it. There is a really great story to it. It has a nice classic, old feel to it. Richard Pryor is excellent as the proprietor of the Harlem after hours joint, and the late Red Foxx and Robin Harris both turn in priceless performances as well. If you are a true fan of either Murphey or Pryor then you owe it to yourself to pick this one up. It's just too bad that it hasn't yet been produced for DVD.

Summary: How about zero stars?
Review: This was one of the most dismal moviegoing experiences of my life. What a vanity production -- Eddie Murphy did everything but play Della Reese, and he did nothing well. This was the peak of his I'm So Cool phase, right before he slid to the bottom, and no one bought it. (If they did, why did the movie flop? and where did his career go between this and The Nutty Professor?) His veneration of Pryor reduced that comic genius to nothing more than a too-understated Murphy Says I'm Cool presence. The profanity was so egregious, so unnecessary, that it lost all power to either shock or amuse. And the ending was so quick and perfunctory that I defy any of these five-star writers to say it satisfied them. The only thing even remotely funny was Arsenio Hall's performance. Not surprising, since his performance was the only funny thing in "Coming to America," too.

Basically, if you want to see a lot of wasted talent in some really nifty tuxedos spouting some really annoying vulgarities, this is the dud for you.

Summary: Good looking, smooth, enjoyable B movie.
Review: Eddie Murphy makes his directorial debut with a lushly produced, light hearted, enjoyable period piece about 1930s Harlem club owners. The all star cast turns in a pleasant ensemble performance, with an emphasis on smoothness rather than hilarity.

Film critics cut Murphy no slack, they shredded him for not living up to expectations of a comic masterpiece. They should take a laxative. Yes, yes, I agree that the plot is routine, it's a remake of The Sting, there is profanity, it's not a masterpiece, Eddie is more smooth than funny, yadda yadda yadda.

OK, so maybe Harlem Nights didn't live up to the hype. So what? It's still an enjoyable film. It's very entertaining to watch so many great performers all in one movie, even if they do pull their punches. The costumes are Oscar-caliber, the Herbie Hancock soundtrack is superfine, and everyone looks good.

I notice that Hollywood routinely produces a veritable torrent of well-cast B movies (and far worse). I notice that plenty of mainstream comedians break stereotype and try on non-comedic movie roles. Surely some of our most talented black performers can be given the latitude to do the same? Relax, and enjoy the movie for what it is.

Summary: Great...no matter WHO thinks it isn't...
Review: This old movie is simply a classic. It was meant to be a comedy and it delivers. Judging from the reviews, including one from one person who was obviously "brilliant" enough to critique this film yet dim enough to use no punctuation or capitalization WHATSOEVER, this is another classic case of "blacks loved it--whites hated it" (other cases include "Life" (1999) and "Wild Wild West" (1998)...but anyway...back to "Harlem Nights") My review will [probably] not get posted for this reason, but it's true. Only someone with a lily-white existence could be as harsh about a movie like this; blacks wouldn't be so disrespectful. Not that being white is a crime--it's not; the crime is judging a movie harshly with ABSOLUTELY NO CULTURAL FRAME OF REFERENCE. That's like hating country music and giving Billy Gilman (sp?) one star because you don't like his songs or style. Stupid, right? So...ignore the negative reviews. "Harlem Nights" is a fine comedy with wonderful, hillarious characters. It's a great period piece which depicts Harlem in its heyday. The actors have great chemistry with each other. This movie, for fans of Reese, Foxx, Pryor, or Murphy, is absolutely enjoyable.

Summary: Eddie Murphy at his best!
Review: Eddie Murphy stars and directed this hilarious film. It has the three most funniest comics ever to grace the stage or screen, Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx. Eddie plays Quick a hot tempered enforcer for Pryor's gang. It is set during the dirty thrities, in Harlem and is the funniest movie I have ever seen, the fight between Murphy and Della Reese is great. A must see for all Comedy fans

Summary: Harlem Nights
Review: Unmistakably one of the best "sleeper" films I have ever seen. Of course, you have to be a Pryor, Foxx and company fan to apprreciate the humor and drama here. Too often, Richard Pryor's talent is unrecognized by some professional "critics". Regretably, he had only scratched the surface before his illness took him out of the business. The whole interaction of the cast, especially the relationship of Della Reese and Eddie Murphy is exceptional. What so far seems to be unrecognized is the beautiful costumes and sets. They certainly deserve six stars. This should surely be a classic film and definitely a keeper to anyone's video library!

Summary: Harlem Nights Reigns Supreme
Review: Harlem Nights is without equal in the African American film list. It is a great story which pokes humour at the disparities in America. Who wouldn't find Eddie Murphy,Redd Foxx, and Richard Pryor funny? The movie is a classic. Even the scenes where they poke fun at the champ are hilarious. Della Reese is masterful. Harlem Nights is a great film. The language may be excessive at times but what else could you expect from Pryor and Murphy. Eddie Murphy continues to be a genius and one of the best comedians of all time. If you don't own a copy of Harlem Nights buy it, watch it and love it. It is wonderful.
