Summary: Greatest of all time
Review: This movie is just that the greatest of all time. Eddie Murphy had me [really] laughing on this movie. What makes it so, funny is that the movie seems as if it is not evening trying to make you laugh. Red Foxx (I think that's his name) was one person on the movie that you could not stop laughing at becuse he always had some slick comment to say to everyone. This is a classic and it never get's old, it old school comedy at it best. Eddie Murphy's best movie he ever played in! Pay your respect to the legends in the comedy game and see this movie it's worth your time.

Summary: What Went Wrong, Eddie?
Review: How can you put Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor and Arsenio Hall and Red Foxx in a movie that is NOT great? Maybe Eddie was not ready to direct yet. Maybe the stars outshined each other--too much equals too little. Now remember, there are some really good scenes in this one: Arsenio the crybaby gangster out for revenge; the mafia bag man who gets ripped off by the sexy prostitute; the stuttering boxing champ. This is a very funny movie--don't get me wrong--but it tries to do too much and doesn't exactly achieve it. Boomerang and Coming to America KNEW what they were alll about, then went out and did it. This one misses just a little bit, but is still worth watching.

Summary: Foxx, Pryor, and Murphy...What More Could You Ask For?
Review: Harlem Nights is such an overlooked film in the comedy genre. There are so many hilarious exchanges in this film, especially between Redd Foxx and Della Reese. Richard Pryor actually plays the straight man in this and does a pretty admirable job. Eddie Murphy plays his son Quick, who is a hot headed gambler. The supporting cast is really what sets this film apart from others. Arsenio Hall plays the brother of slain character Tommy Smalls and is immensely effective in his brief appearance. Danny Aiello plays the crooked cop Phil Cantone so smugly that you want to reach through the screen and smash his face. But Redd Foxx and Della Reese steal the show with their hilarious banter about each others weight and eyesight. It is apparently clear that of these three generations of comic heavyweights, Redd Foxx is the undisputed champion. This is a fine addition to any dvd collection and as good as it gets in the comic genre.

Summary: If you don't like this you must be a blind......
Review: Fans of the movie know what would come next in the title of this review. I don't know about the black/white humor thing - I'm white and my husband and I and another couple find this movie side splitting. The talented comedians in this film are great! We have quoted lines to each other from this film for at least the last ten years, anyway. So glad it's out in DVD. It will make a great Valentine's gift for dh.

Summary: A Great Movie - Entertaining, funny and will be a classic
Review: Although this movie has been out for quite awhile and I have seen it many times on television I finally purchased the DVD. My collection would not be complete without this funny and very entertaining movie. Forget the critics and purchase the DVD.

You'll laugh your little pinky toe off!!

Summary: "Oh, so now your gonna shoot me in my pinky toe."
Review: One of Eddie Murphy's funniest films and the only film he directed. In "Harlem Nights" (1989), the setting is 1930s Harlem and Eddie stars as Quick, adopted son of Sugar Ray (Richard Pryor). Together, they run the popular gambling club "Sugar Ray's" and the staff is made up of some of the funniest comedians like Redd Foxx (Bennie "Snake Eyes" Wilson) and Robin Harris (Jerome). Also an important part of the club is Madama Vera (Della Reese) who is "in charge of the girls". Anyone who only knows Della from "Touched by an Angel" must watch the part where Quick accuses her of stealing. She goes crazy and they have a fight in the alley that ends with a missing pinky toe. Not to be missed! Anyway, "Sugar Ray's" ends up doing better than all the other clubs in town and mobster Bugsy Calhoune (Michael Lerner) and crooked cop Phil Cantone (Danny Aiello) want a piece of the action. Quick also has other problems in a dangerous woman named Dominique La Rue (Jasmine Guy) and the Crying Man (Arsenio Hall in one of his funniest performances, rivaled only by his many characters in "Coming to America"). Another of my favorite characters is Tommy Smalls (Thomas Ford from "Martin") who has to laugh very loud everytime he says "Mr. Quick".

This film is a very funny action/gangster film. The comedy aspect wears out a little before the end of the film when they start spending more time on revenge against Bugsy Calhoune, but the film is worth owning for the hilarious first two-thirds. Congratulations to Eddie Murphy for writing such a funny film as well as collecting some of the funniest names in comedy to be in it. I havent seen the DVD so I can't tell you what the picture and sound are like. I know there are no extra features, but the film is worth adding to your comedy collection especially if your a fan of Eddie, Pryor, or Redd Fox. Keep in mind - this is a film for adults in terms of abundant vulgar language, this ain't Doctor Doolittle!

Summary: Who cares what the "critics" think?
Review: The editorial for this film is total BS! I remember seeing this film in the theaters as a seven year old. Although I did not understand all of the jargon associated with the film, I laughed. The most funny scene was the "pinky toe" incident between Reese and Murphy. As a twenty year old, I still laugh at this film and it will always be in my top 10 films of all time. One reviewer put it into perspective. Caucasian humor is truly different than Black humor. For instance, what is the TV show "Friends" all about?!?!
