Rating: Summary: A must-have for Python fans! Review: I enjoyed this DVD very much. As a die-hard Python fan, it was great fun for me to watch John Cleese, Graham Chapman, and my favorite Python Michael Palin in this program. The show is very clever and the entire cast is very funny (and very annoying, but that's the point). It's also fun to see the (very) early incarnations of "Dead Parrot", "Dirty Fork", and "Silly Job Interview".If you're a Python fan, I highly recommend rounding out your collection with this excellent DVD.
Rating: Summary: Very funny Review: I honestly don't understand the negative reviews some people give. I bought this DVD yesterday, and I couldn't stop laughing. To my mind, some of the sketches (although crudely done) are slightly funnier than a lot of Monty Python stuff! Even the DVD itself was irritatingly funny, with the fingerprints (gosh, I hate those on my DVD's!) and the menu which doesn't take you were you want to be (it actually got me genuinly annoyed). Get this DVD version today - you won't regret it!
Rating: Summary: Beautifully Irritating! Review: I loved this tape. I bought it yesterday and am still laughing about the sketch about the airline pilots. John Cleese is an absolute comic genius, and this performance shows him at his best. The only thing that prevented me from giving this tape 5 stars was the rather tasteless ending from the sketch in which Micheal Palin is forced to tell a joke he hates. I don't see how anyone can find spousal abuse funny, and quite frankly if I wanted to see that, I wouldn't have bought this video. Well, I just soured myself on it.
Rating: Summary: A MUST-SEE FOR ALL PYTHON FANS! Review: I THINK THAT THIS VIDEO IS VERY GOOD AT A RESFRESHER COURSE TO HELP PEOPLE TO BECOME MORE NEUROTIC. IT IS VERY FUNNY, AND THE SKITS ARE VERY NICE ALSO. IF YOU ARE WONDERING HOW LONG IT IS, IT'S ABOUT 1 HOUR AND 8 MINUTES, OR 68 MINUTES.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing for such a funny man Review: I was very excited to see this video because I think John Cleese is quite funny. Little did I know that this video has less comedy than Boys Dont Cry. If not for one airplane pilot sketch, this video would not be worth the price of the rental. Basically, it is a sketch comedy piece where John Cleese shows various ways to irritate people...but it should be called how to put the viewer to sleep because it simply doesnt deliver on the laughs. Most of the video seemed pointless, but maybe that is because I expected to be rolling on the floor laughing. I dont suggest this should be viewed... This my friends, is just a warning...if you absolutely love Cleese, check it out. If you didnt think he was funny in A fish Called Wanda, you may be in trouble because he is 100 times more amusing in that picture. Unless the entire concept of this video is to irritate the viewer...then it makes perfect sense.
Rating: Summary: Mixed bag Review: I'm a great fan of Fawlty Towers. This is a very mixed bag: - Cleese's introductions to each skit (in the form of a self-help lecturer) are well done - The two skits that made me laugh were the man trying to get the car dealer to fix the car he just purchased (as someone pointed out, a predecessor to the Dead Parrot skit) and the TV interviewer who doesn't allow the guest to say anything. - Most of the skits are so long and painful that they are hard to watch. Makes Monty Python seem subtle. - Afaid that I find men pretending to be old ladies to be very unfunny. Some good bits, but not at all his best.
Rating: Summary: Not what I expected .... Review: John Cleese rules - no doubt about it. There are lots of laughs and the usual python style of humor. Basicly a collection of sketches. I had hopped for a more standup like thing where Cleese would share some of his wisdom. Instead he tries to use sketches to show (at times) pretty funny illustrations.
But no behind the scenes stuff? No interviews? I would have loved to hear Cleese's idea behind this format and message.
Rating: Summary: A Disappointment for a Huge Python Fan Review: Let me just say that I absolutely adore John Cleese and anyone associated with him. Maybe that's why I found this film so incredibly disappointing: because I expected too much from a man whom I admire more than you can imagine.
In terms of entertainment value: this film is fairly slow and has a lot of hit-and-miss jokes. Most of the sketches drag on too long so that they're no longer funny. There are a few very funny ones that I couldn't get enough of, but they are few and far between.
However, this is definitely worth a watch if you are a Python fan and want to see the beginnings of the Pythonesque humor. Python even re-recorded a couple of the sketches later on: the silly job interview, for instance (a-ding ding ding ding ding). So, a 4 for historical value.
I wish I could write a more glowing review of this film because I really, really wanted to like it. However, I'd have to say stear clear unless you are a big Python fan and want to complete your Python knowledge.
Rating: Summary: Cleese before his prime Review: Not bad material, but not great material either. The "How to be irritating" framing device is lamely done. Some of the bits were later recognizably recycled for Monty Python (where they work much better). Interesting mainly as a look at early Cleese.
Rating: Summary: Early Monty Review: There are really only two sketches that are worth watching. The airline sketch, and the one with the car mechanic. Although John Cleese has a few good observations between sketches, it doesn't make up for the fact that it's not his BEST performance. He couldn't help it-this was early in his career. My best advice? Rent it. You'll get the same amount of entertainment for less money.
