Rating: Summary: PECK AND HEPBURN SHINE Review: It is believed that black-listed screenwriter Dalton Trumbo wrote ROMAN HOLIDAY in 18 days and got $50,000 through a "front" to pay for his living expenses and legal fees while he spent a year in jail for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. If that's really the case, it's hard to find any hidden agenda or subliminal political message in this timeless romance. Gregory Peck is an American journalist who, seeking an exclusive interview with Audrey Hepburn, a rebelling princess on the lam, pretends ignorance of her true identity when fate brings them together. But Peck's plan falters as the two fall in love. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and Audrey Hepburn won an OscarĀ© in this her first major role. The late William Wyler was a masterful director who was comfortable with a wide variety of stories and genres (The Best Years of our Lives, Ben Hur, The Collector). His signature was letting the story be the star. This fully restored print is breathtaking. Extras include a "Remembering Roman Holiday" documentary, a featurette on the restoring process and a look at costumer Edith head's Paramount years. Recommended.
Rating: Summary: We've loved Audrey ever since Review: The world was introduced to Audrey Hepburn with this exceptional romantic comedy, and it's been a love affair between star and audience ever since. Gregory Peck plays a reporter working for an American newspaper in Rome who stumbles upon the story of a lifetime when a visiting princess (Hepburn) goes for a spree in the middle of the night. Thinking herself incognita, she eventually gives in to the sedative she was given back at the palace and in a drugged stupor ends up in his taxicab. The next day he shows her around the city, pretending to not to know who she is until he can get back to his typewriter and publish the story that will make him world famous. Unfortunately, a problem develops: he really begins to like her. William Wyler's direction is spiffy, Rome hasn't looked this good in ages, and Hepburn's fresh charm and adorable demeanor are simply to die for. A real classic!
Rating: Summary: The Fairy Tale Review: Lovely, sheltered and protected princess escapes the confines of her royal handlers and scurries off into the night, in search of real life. Fortunately, she meets an American, who certainly can show her about, but the undercurrent of possible betrayal and personal gain is always under the surface. Since this IS a fairy tale, essentially, it highlights the scenery of Roma and her adventures, while capturing the spirit of a sweeter " la dolca vita. " Hepburn is at her most gamine best when she needs to be and at her most beautiful and regal when called on for that aspect. Peck is, as usual, strong and handsome and well matched agaisnt Hepburn. For comic relief, Eddie Albert at his 1950's-ish bohemian / photograher / artiste best. Eye candy for fans of the three and for The Eternal City.
Rating: Summary: Movie is great but DVD a disappointment, Buy the VHS Review: I am surprised that I like this chick flick very much. This movie is romantic, elegant and truly capitivating. This is one of the best movies I have seen. DVD version however, did not deliver the value I expected. The discussion about the making of the movie is brief and definitely not indepth. Get the VHS, you did not miss much from the featurette.
Rating: Summary: What A Great Movie Review: One of the all time great movies of all time. I've been waiting for this movie to come out on DVD for the longest time and it's worth the wait. The studio actually spent the time to restore the footage from the original B&W print.
Rating: Summary: For the record, hardly a geezer-babe connection!!! Review: Responding to the viewer from St. Augustine who thought Peck was far to old for Hepburn. Lets get the facts straight. "Roman Holiday" was released on Jan 1, 1953, having been made in 1952. Audrey Hepburn was already 23, not 22 when she made this movie. Gregory Peck was 36, not 37. Yes, thirteen years is quite a difference but nothing compared to what we see in movies today where established leading male actors are cast alongside female leads who are 20-30 years younger. Peck looks distinguished because of his professional attire, dressy by todays standards. Women in that time would dress to match and often looked more mature than they really were as a result. The point of "Roman Holiday" is that Hepburn has left all the "trappings" behind when she ducked out on being a princess for a romp around Rome with the dashing Peck. This explains her simple and more youthful clothes during most of the film. A leading man of less stature than Peck would have been overshadowed completely by the radiant Hepburn. This is a great film! Don't miss it! Thanks, CAL

Review: Legendary Director William Wyler chose Audrey Hepburn (little know actress & her first leading role - wins Best Female Actress Oscar!) to play a princess who sneaks away for a self proclaimed one day holiday, from her royal duties while visiting Rome. She encounters American newsman (Gregory Peck - in a very believable comedy/love role) who finds out she is a princess in hiding. As all 1950's movies they end up falling in love and spend a very adventurous day site seeing in this outstanding motion picture. Royal duties, diplomacy and reality bring this romantic encounter to an end. Rating: Summary: All HOLIDAYS lead to ROME!!!... Review: A million stars!!!... I simply love EVERYTHING about this movie! This is an all time classic; a romantic comedy that truly stands the test of time; a film that I shall cherish as long as I live! Director William Wyler is the MASTER! The chemistry between Hepburn and Peck is electrifying! (Eddie) Albert is the sweet icing on top of a very delicious cake! The DVD contains some very rare footage of Hepburn auditioning for the role; not to mention a very neat documentary about the making of the film and valuable interviews with the stars (including Peck and Albert). For you "modern" love birds out there.....you gotta start appreciating what the older generations had to offer; hence, I suggest postponing Harry Potter and treating your significant other to this awesome DVD. It is the perfect movie to watch on your first, second, third..... n+1 date! This DVD is a MUST HAVE for all Audrey Hepburn fans! She looks so graceful, elegant, sweet, charming, funny, beautiful, innocent, gorgeous...oh gosh...I LOVE HER!!!... YOU WILL LOVE HER TOO!!!...
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly well made and entertaining..... Review: I wish this film was shot in technicolor to better enjoy the spendor that is Rome....however, the love story between these two fine actors makes up for the black and white presentation. I am not a fan of old Hollywood classics but I must admit I was impressed with the ending of this film. It was very well written and the story would never fly in today's Hollywood romantic comedies. That makes it refreshing and a 5 star film!
Rating: Summary: every thing you always loved about Roman Holiday and more Review: If you have seen this movie before you are in for a treat, fullly restored will all the dirt removed from the film negatative the picture quality of this DVD is amazing. Ms. Hepburn is even more stunning then I remember her, as if that is possible. If you have not seen this movie, get the DVD, this movie in my opinion represents the best in hollywood movie making, what seems to be light fare is really an amazing story of love, friendship, and duty. Todays dirctors would do well to study this movie and how a love scean, were the main charaters embrace, full clothed can be 1000 times more intresting then a sex scean will the characters totally naked.
