Rating: Summary: River Phoenix as Devo Review: I have definitely seen this movie like, over a hundred times. I've seen all of River's movies. And almost all of them over a hundred times. He does a great job in all of them, but especially in this film. He plays his character so well. Whenever I watch his films, I almost forget that he's acting. IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT, YOUR REALLY MISSING OUT!! The cast is great and the whole story is just hilarious and sad at the same time.
Rating: Summary: Before DiCaprio, there was Phoenix... Review: I love just about anything that the late River Phoenix is in. The charisma just oozes out of the screen in his films. He has an angelic quality that comes through in his characters. This film is one of my favorites, with River, and in general. His character of Devo, a sweet, offbeat young man with a crush on Tracy Ullman's character, Rosalee, is priceless. Rosalee is married to Kevin Kline, who is cheating on her. She finds out and asks Devo to help her kill him. Of course, Devo will do anything for her. So he hires a couple of spaced out hippies, portrayed hysterically by Keanu Reeves and William Hurt. These two are so incompetant and lame, they can't even knock off Rosalee's husband at close range! What happens next is not for me to tell, but you better be prepared to laugh your self sick. The woman who plays Rosalee's Mother steals the show! (River...I miss you.)
Rating: Summary: Greatest Tacoma movie since Tugboat Annie! Review: I pick movies like this: If a film is on the bubble, if Leonard Maltin pans it, I'll usually go for it. As Maltin said, Kevin Kline is great, as is Joan Plowright(BTW, I recently tripped over Joan P. as a Bad girl in a Brit flick from the '60s. Too much makeup & a mini-skirt. THAT was weird), but for him to say that "after that the film falls flat" shows that he watched the 1st 5 minutes, bailed, & went off to simonize his dentures. He obviously missed River Phoenix & Tracey Ullman, not to mention GREAT performances by Keanu Reeves & William Hurt as hit men. This was the first movie I saw Tracey Ullman in, & she was great as Joey Boca's suffering wife.
Rating: Summary: Dull, stupid and unconvincing Review: I sat through this abomination with my sisters. We can rarely agreee on what month it is, but we all agreed this was the most annoying movie we'd ever seen. The plot is pointless, the characters are absurd without a trace of humor, and the acting is dreadful. I suppose people find anything funny, but this is not just not funny, it's ugly. If Keanu Reeves's performance is one of the highlights. we know we're in trouble!
Rating: Summary: Man who didn't know how to die Review: I saw this film yesterday and I really loved it. The plot: Joey (Kevin Kline), an Italian-American pizza restaurant owner is cheating on his wife (Tracey Ullman) who decides to kill him with her mother (Joan Plowright). Devo (River Phoenix), a young boy who works at the restaurant is ready to help them and hires two spaced-out hippies (William Hurt and Keanu Reeves) to do the job. But the man just won't die. The actors are great; Kline's accent is fun, Ullman is a great actress, Phoenix gives a beautiful performance and Hurt and Reeves are so real that you'd almost believe they were really on drugs while filming. And Plowright just steals the show.
Rating: Summary: Far Under-Rated Comedy.. Review: I saw this movie shortly after it's release on HBO in the earliy '90s. It has a full fledge cast that just make it superb to watch. Kevin Kline as Joey the Pizzaria Owner, who just can't get enough women, and is soo fun loving. Tracy Ullman plays his wife Rosalee, who loves her husband soo much, she would rather kill him than share him with any other woman. Joan Plowright plays Rosalee's Mother, who has a nack for mechanical work and it's nothing for her to be working on a carbortor at the Dinner Table at a restaraunt while the family is dinnig out. River Phoenix plays the boy who works at the Pizzaria, and is deeply in love with Rosalee, so much so,that he is willing to aid her in knocking off her husband, only after the futile attempts from Rosalee and her Mom. After he fails, they call in a couple of bargin basement junkies,(William Hurt & Keanu Reeves) from the local tavern to finish the job, but even they can't seem to pull it off. It's just one good laugh after another. I wore out my VHS Tape and then got the Laser Disc. I was happy to discover that it has been released on DVD!Also, I believe that this is based on a true story as well!!

Rating: Summary: SITCOM-STYLE COMEDY OF MISADVENTURES WITH APPEALING CAMEOS.. Review: I take off one star for the somewhat slight theme based on the true but quaint counter-intuitive romance of a couple whose marriage was revitalized after the wife almost succeeded in murdering her husband. But it comes with some brilliant cameos from some big names: Kline as an Italian pizza shop owner, William Hurt and Keanu Reeves as spaced out druggies, Plowright a staunch mother with a thick Yugoslavian accent and extremely funny, and an absolutely pivotal wife's role played by Ulman, who finds the stubborn vindictiveness inside her character, sunny and trusting one moment and unforgiving and brutal the next. It's not an astounding comedy and some gags are hit-and-miss, but as a saving grace the film is well-paced. The DVD I got features trailers for three other movies (go figure) but I still recommend this one as a decent rental.
Rating: Summary: Even Better Widescreen Review: I'd have to agree with the majority of reviewers in nominating this gut busting film as one easily looked over... Directly funny as you follow the antics of these crazy people, but subltly hilarious in ways similar to a lot of UK flicks. Most of the touches are easily overlooked. i.e. Keanu's character paying for a cab with crunched up balls of money he pulls out of his pocket, which is also filled with all kinds of various junk and lint. At which point he tries to determine the value of the money-balls by rolling them about his hand and finding a corner he can recognize. Difficult to find in widescreen format - to my knowledge it's only available in laserdisc format P>BTW, someone else mentioned that this is loosely based on a real event. That's true. Convincingly done by Keanu Reeves & William Hurt. Good flick, lots of laughs, check it out in WS if you can.
Rating: Summary: A classic finally arrives on DVD!! Review: I've been waiting for years for this to come out on DVD. I won't recap the story, because most people have already heard it. Just want to say that the DVD version offers both wide-screen and full-screen versions. There's nothing in the way of extras, which was a little disappointing--I would have loved to have seen something about the real-life couple that inspired this movie. But I was just so excited to get my hands on this DVD, it's one of those movies that not many people heard of, but don't forget once they've seen it. And you'll never be able to take Keanu Reeves seriously again, no matter how many times you see him in the Matrix!!
