Rating: Summary: Ying and Yang perfection Review: Colins Higgin's simple premise and Hal Ashby's subtle direction, coupled with on-target performances illuminates the brilliant use of irony that is lacking in cinema today. This perfect ying and yang; a young man who has everything, status, wealth and youth is obsessed with death. Contrast him with a woman in her twilight, faded beauty, no visible means of support, living on the fringe but she is obsessed with life. If comedy is derived from conflict then there is plenty of it in this film. I can't urge you enough to watch this movie. It inspires me and makes me laugh.PS, also look for the visual metaphors, like "Perma Seal" on the coffin or the daisies to tombstones sequence. Powerful stuff!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Film Review: This movie is one of the best movies that I have ever seen. Harold is an 18-year-old from an extremely wealthy family. He is being raised by his snobbish mother who has no idea of who Harold really is or what he likes. Harold is fascinated by death, and frequents funerals. His main hobby is tormenting his mother by committing fake suicide attempts, some of which are very amusing. He meets Maude, a 79-year-old woman who also enjoys attending funerals and strikes up a friendship with him. The movie focuses on their relationship and the effect it has on Harold's view of himself.
Rating: Summary: One of a kind film Review: What? You havent seen Harold and Maude? This is the movie that we identified with in the early 70s. Yes, it is outrageous and funny, but more than that it teaches a simple lesson: loving life. This is a one of a kind movie that others have tried to imitate but have never hit the mark like this one did. Ruth Gordon and But Cort are perfectly cast but special mention has to be made of Vivian Pickles, the woman playing Harold's mother. She was robbed of not being given the 1971 Oscar for best supporting actress. She wasnt even nominated! We loved this one in the 70s because it represented viewpoints that we were all striving to attain. For those of you who are younger, if you are a fan of Benny and Joon, see where they got the inspiration. This one is as quirky but loveable as it gets.
Rating: Summary: A cult classic, a mediocre movie Review: First, let me address the quality of the DVD itself. The picture is VHS quality and the sound is also average. As for the film, it is a disappointment. I love quirky movies, but not this one. Lots of melodrama. The movie tries too hard.
Rating: Summary: COULDN'T BE ANY BETTER!!! Review: I just saw this movie for the first time a few days ago and I am sorry I never discovered it sooner. What an amazing movie! I don't think I could say enough about how touching this movie is. There isn't one thing I would change about this movie. The characters are absolutely perfect! I especially liked Bud Cort's performance. I don't think there is anyone else out there that could have been a better Harold. There are so many really funny parts in this movie. I admit the whole age difference thing is kind of weird, but it just goes to show you that if you let appearances bother you, you could be passing up an amazing friend that totally changes your life for the better. That's what makes this movie so special. People not caring about what the world thinks of them. If you havn't seen this movie, I reccommend you see it as soon as possible. If you want to see a feel good movie, this is it! I think some people might think the ending is sad, but I think it has the best ending possible. It's the perfect ending if you really think about it. It was the best way to go. I couldn't give 'Harold And Maude' enough praise. I enjoyed this movie a lot and I know if you like romantic comedies, you will love this movie. Share it with everyone you know!!!
Rating: Summary: Harold! That was your last date! Review: Harold learns that some parents hang on longer than they should, and that those who really teach, disappear before you think you are ready to live without them.
Rating: Summary: The real deal. Review: Glum-faced stoop-shouldered suicidal Harold meets Maude; he is still a teenager while she has decided that her life will be ending, shortly, at her own hand, after almost 80 years on the planet. In one unforgettable week, she teaches him how to find joy, how to embrace his life in its every aspect, and even takes him into her bed -- all this set to a Cat Stevens soundtrack. It's too much, too funny, and altogether wonderful. One of my all-time favorites -- buy it; you will love yourself in the morning.
Rating: Summary: To me, it will always be a Glorious Film! Review: Everything about this film is picture, absolutely, Perfect. The character Harold is beautifully, yet realistically, acted by the talented Bud Cort, and Ruth Gordon makes the movie a classic with her portrayal of the life-loving Maude. There are many things I adore and "Harold and Maude", from the costumes to the hilarious lines to the ageless (literally) love story, but I think that it's ability to make an impression on people of any age, my parents love it and I absolutely adore it, is a rare quality in a film. To the people who say that Harold and Maude's relationship is "creepy", they obviously do not understand the point, or much else about life, I'm afraid. I would say that this movie would be entertaining, and maybe even life changing, to anyone who contemplates death a la Harry Burns in "When Harry Met Sally", likes the satiric and alternative look at the world as in "Fight Club" (without the violence), is un peu depressed, or just wants to see something really fabulous, uplifting, and incredibly delightful!
Rating: Summary: Still beloved after almost 30 yrs Review: It's been almost 30 yrs since I first saw this movie, and I still get goosebumps when I think of it. I hear the sound-track in my head. I haven't seen the VHS or DVD - have never seen it except in a theater, but I advise you to see it any way you can. See it more than once, but not too often nor too soon after the last viewing - keep it special.
Rating: Summary: I could take refuge in the atmosphere of Harold and Maude. Review: This coming from someone who only recently discovered H&M, I probably don't have much to add to the praise. With all the over-the-top special effects that pollute films today, the unassuming quiet simplicity of this eccentric little film is a breath of fresh air. The love story was very sweet; the concentrated shot of positivity very uplifting. These points make the film commendable; what makes the film incredible is the atmosphere it creates - audio visual candy. You don't even need to follow the plot to appreciate the pure art that it is. Calm beautiful images juxtaposed against calm beautiful music. The two meld to create a new beast of sensory awe on a level beyond storyline. And there's just something about Harold's voice that's really mesmerizing - indescribable, save for A Poem. It's so soft and slight - like the balm of summer's breeze across my face.
