Summary: bittersweet and haunting
Review: This movie always brings tears to my eyes but still makes me laugh. The treatment of suicide in this film is the best I've ever seen - touching, tragic, and still funny - so that you can see that all storms have a rainbow after them. Definitely a must see, but you have to be in the right mood. It is not all light, nor all dark.

Summary: One of the best movies I've ever seen.
Review: Harold and maude are both characters we can all relate to. Perhaps each is a bit extreme in their mannerism yet together they create the perfect blend of life and death. Acceptance and fear.

Summary: Wonderfully outrageous!
Review: I saw Harold & Maude when it was first released in 1971 when my late husband and I were just starting to date. It quickly became one of our top two favorites (Summer of '42 was the other). We bought the video sometime in the early '80s and have always cherished it. Now my husband is gone but every time I watch the video it brings back memories of those happy years. O' Happy Day!!

Summary: Absolutely amazing
Review: Harold and Maude is the feel good movie for people who don't really want to feel good. The movie is so touching in its own dark way. Makes me cry every time I see it. And the music is sublime. There was a sndtrk. released- but only in Japan. What a pity.

Review: There is no other film that I enjoy more than Harold and Maude. I have watched it countless times since I was a teenager (nearly 20 years ago) and it remains my absolute favorite. It is an incredible, emotional ride that leaves you singing and laughing through the tears. Cat Stevens' music is as haunting and uplifting as the movie, complementing it perfectly.

Clearly, this is a beloved classic...so, who do we have to persuade to release Harold and Maude on DVD?!!!

Summary: Uplifting
Review: Reading the other reviews, there seems to be a consensus that this movie has touched many people in very strong and inexplicable ways. It is no different for me. What I find interesting about this film, though, is that it touches me differently depending on the stage of life I am in. When I first watched this film twenty years ago as a high school student, my connection to the film came primarily through Harold's experiences. Now I find myself connecting much more strongly to Maude's experiences.

It's wonderfully moving, charmingly funny, and always filled with hope and love and kindness.

Summary: "All the world dearly loves a cage. . . "
Review: But not Maude! She shows Harold that the boundaries/cages of life are self-imposed. Without giving any more of the story away, I'll add this comment: This movie has as many quotable quotes as Shakespeare! Not droll, boring lines suitable only for high-brows, but food for human spirits that have been broken almost to the point of no repair. Maude liberates Harold and Harold makes Maude "feel like a schoolgirl." When your love for life grows weak, see "Harold and Maude." One more thing, I had never seen a "Mona Lisa" smile on any actor until I saw this film. After Harold's second date runs out of his house in horror, look at Bud Cort's face! Harold gives the Mona Lisa-smile at the camera while Cat Steven's music plays background, then he looks up at his mother's glaring face and the smile quickly fades as he then looks down. It would take any other actor HOURS to perfect that scene, but Bud Cort makes it look effortless!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Very well done.
Review: Bud Cort makes his debut in Harold & Maude, a sometimes funny, sometimes dramatic, always touching film. The acting (especially Ruth Gordon) is superb. But the ending made me feel like something was missing.

Summary: one of the best movies in history
Review: Along with the Rocky Horror Picture Show, this is the best movie ever made. I just don't understand that, if it's a cult film, why haven't they made a soundtrack?!? I've looked everywhere! If a music producer reads this: if you make an album, you have al least one guaranteed sale!!!.

Review: oy. where to begin. umm this film is undeniably, undoubtedly the best film ever made, and the best film ever to be made. some have said, you are not likely to see another movie this good again. such a statement bears no reflection upon the state of movies now--only upon the perfection of this film. it is simply impossible to make a better film. (and it is DEFINITELY a film, not a movie). yes. well there is harold, the hilarious, touching, poignant individualist. there is maude, the sunny, happy and full of life woman with whom maude falls in love. i cannot say anymore of the plot, because a good deal of the pleasure of this film is in the first screening, when the film thrills and shocks with its brilliant plot. however, i have seen this film countless times, probably in the hundreds, and am still in love. additional bonus: cat stevens!!! it was through harold and maude that i was first introduced to cat, and now he is one of my favorites. so yes, at all costs, see this film.
