Summary: It takes a special kind of brain....
Review: Most people won't like this movie. It is weird, at times shocking and offensive, and most definitely not for the general public. But I found it terribly funny, full of terrific catch-phrases, and more entertaining that most of the movies I've seen this year. Depp is incredible, particularly with his dead-on characterization of Hunter Thompson.

Summary: Mr Gilliam does it again
Review: What is wrong with you lame people? Don't you understand what's going on? ANSWER ME!!! Leave this planet and go and watch Top Gun. You are obviously all puritans of the highest degree. We all know books and films are totally different mediums and should be viewed without prejudice. It's no good being elitist and dropping into the conversation 'Oh, it's not half as good as the book'. Most people can read, so for all of those who haven't read it, go buy it, then watch the movie and form your own opinion.

Review: How could some of you guys rip on a movie of so many levels. Movies, such as this on, give me a reason to be alive! The whole band of MULSE (and Wes) can back me up on this to. I am going to go now and watch it again!

Summary: What a long bad trip it is
Review: Hunter S. Thompson was a major figure in the 70's. His original publications in Rolling Stone helped draw together a counter culture. This film, however, is nothing. Zilch. Zero.If a 0 was a choice, then this movie deserves a 0. There is no redeeming value. Social or otherwise. The man whose life became immortalized in Doonesbury, here turns into a cartoon character drawn by a drunken idiot. Perhaps that was Hunter's life. But as a movie it is unwatchable. Save your money. Chug a bottle of booze. And sit with your head in a toilet. You'll be more highly entertained than watching one moment of this film.

Summary: Excellent. Follows the book fairly well.
Review: The book that could not be made into a movie is what Thompson's 1971 journey into the savage heart of the American dream was called. But, thanks to one excellent director and some superior acting, it happened. Gilliam's F&LLV was great; so great in fact that I watched 3 times back to back. Everyone should see this movie. Whether or not you like drugs, whether or not you like gonzo filmmaking, you should see this movie. If you saw it and didn't like it, you need to see it with what Bill Hicks called your "third eye."

Summary: Have to be on drugs to enjoy this one
Review: Let me start by saying that I am a Gilliam fan, and that I have nothing against 'trippy' movies, but I couldn't stand this one. Even the dazzling effects couldn't hide the fact that there was no plot here, no story, no character development - all I saw was the same stupid drug-jokes over and over. Ha ha, look at the man in the funny hat stumble and force his way in to see Debbie Reynolds. Whatever...

Summary: Fear and Loathing was what I felt for the director
Review: Not since my 1996 Root Canal have I had to endure such pain as sitting through this film. What a disjointed, unfulfilling piece of crap, and to know on my death bed 40 years from now, I could have spent those 2 hours doing anything else, will haunt me. Flushing the three dollars, and watching it swirl down the toilet would have been more entertaining.

Summary: Perhaps one of the greatest DVD releases so far!
Review: This is one of the best applications of DVD. The video and audio quality both blew my mind, especially all of the special effects. I watched the DVD a week after I watched it on VHS and the DVD was so much better. It made all of the special effects come alive. The deleted scenes and "making of" special are both excellent bonuses. A must have.

Summary: Love it or Hate it, Depp is awesome.
Review: Yes, yes. I'm sure you have heard it a million times, but either you love it or you hate it. In this case, I LOVE IT. Johnny Depp makes a brilliant performance. This movie is drop down hilarious and is a total trip. If you love this movie, you will watch it over and over and over until you pass out. It's an experience.

Summary: Great movie for home viewing
Review: I missed this movie when it hit the theaters, and now that I've seen it, I'm kind of glad. I had to stop the video several times 'cause I was laughing so hard I thought I'd pee on my couch. In addition, home viewing enables one to maintain a state of mind necessary to truly appreciate the sensory assault of this movie. Johnny is painfully, unbearably funny, yet he lets the brilliance of Duke/Thompson peek through as he peeks through the curtains during the wave scene narration. Brilliant. Del Toro was a perfect Dr. Gonzo and a wonderful surprise. It helps a great deal if you've read the book (everyone should), but if you watch it 5 or 6 times (everyone should) you'll catch most of it. I couldn't return it before "just one more time..." and heard or noticed something new every time. I don't think I actually peed my couch, but the merry-go-round bar scene tested my threshold every time--regardless of my varied states of mind. Gotta buy it before I go broke on rentals.
