Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Alternately hilarious and horrifying
Review: Easily one of the best films of the last decade, and, with the possible exception of "The Hudsucker Proxy", the best film the Coen Brothers have done.

My wife (who is from St. Cloud, Minnesota) and I are both midwesterners who have lived on the East Coast since the mid-'60's, and we thought that the exaggerated accents and behavior were very amusing. Our relatives stil living in Minnesota, however, were NOT amused, which demonstrates the validity of this film's satire.

Ms. McDormand's Oscar was richly deserved. One wishes, in fact, that everyone associated with this film could have been awarded a prize of some kind.

Summary: A supurb film!
Review: Quite simply the finest film of the decade. Masterfully composed, wonderfully acted, and very, very funny. Fargo is a vital picture.

Summary: The Best Film of the 1990s, bar none
Review: Truly a Masterpiece in Black Comedy. You will not see a better film this decade. There has never been a movie I laughed so hard at.

(Also, check out The Big Lebowski. The Dude abides.)

Summary: Great movie
Review: Joel and Ethan Coen are excellent they are the only ones who can make a kidnap/murder movie into a great comedy. You think this is just a simple movie but it's not I know people that did not understand it. William H. Macy is great they should have nominated him for best actor.

Summary: not all i expected
Review: i dont understand what all the fuss was about, it didn't satisfy me as much as the critics said that it would!

Summary: Murder can be funny!
Review: It's hard to believe that a movie based on a true story about a botched fake kidnapping scheme sprinkled with plenty of murders can be funny, but that it is. If you didn't find the humor in Quest for Fire, you probably won't find it here either. The rest of us had a good laugh.

Summary: Not as good as I expected
Review: I went to the store and saw the Fargo video for sale and another movie that I wanted to watch, a supernatural thriller called The Prophecy. It was hard to decide between which to get. I had been wanting to watch The Prophecy for quite a while, but I remembered the last film the Coen brothers wrote and directed, The Big Lebowski. That film was incredibly hilarious, a true comedy classic. I thought Fargo would be that good so I chose it over The Prophecy. Now I get the feeling I made the wrong choice. Fargo is basically about a businessman named Jerry, played well by William H. Macy, who needs money and hires two thugs, the film's main standouts Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare, to kidnap his wife. Jerry's father-in-law will pay for the ransom and he and the kidnappers will split the money fifty-fifty. Jerry tells the thugs the ransom will be 80,000 dollars while Jerry tells the father-in-law the thugs are demanding a million dollars. A bunch of things go wildly wrong and this leads to a sheriff to begin suspecting what's really going on. The plot idea is great, so is most of the acting. I normally like these type of thriller-comedies. I enjoyed Pulp Fiction and Out of Sight so how come I don't like Fargo? I could say its because the film doesn't have enough screen time of Buscemi, Stormare, and Macy. It could also be that annoying "ja" phrase that's used more times than the "f" word in Pulp Fiction and The Big Lebowski combined. It could also be that the scenes where the kidnapping scheme go wrong are very rare. When they do appear they're occasionally hilarious but the film is too short and therefore barely sustained much interest from me. Fargo was critically acclaimed and I can understand why, but my opinion is just different from most others.

Summary: Either you 'get it' or you don't.
Review: All the reviews here seem to fall into two categories, interestingly enough -- either 5 stars or 1 (Most great films tend to divide people). I hope that Joel and Ethan have read some of these, especially the bad ones. I'm sure they would find them extremely funny, and in an odd way, gratifying. You out there that get the point of this film understand what I'm saying -- those that don't, well, just stick to films you can palate -- such as "E.T.", "Titanic" and other hackneyed, pusillanimous productions. Oh, and if you are going to write a review, grab a dictionary and keep the caps lock off for the rest of us. No need to self-parodize yourself any further. Bottom line for the rest of you -- get this film. It's a masterpiece of black comedy.

Summary: I live in Fargo!
Review: Great movie! Believe me, there are plenty of people in this region who talk like that, even though their ancestors got off the boat 100 years ago. (I'm not Scandinavian, so I've escaped it.) There were scenes where my spouse and I were exploding with laughter while others around us just had blank stares.

"Fargo" was one of those rare movies where EVERY character was played really well. Macy was tops in my book. The Coen Brothers are a rare and special breed.
