Rating: Summary: Hard, Fast and Fun! Review: Chopper is an amazing piece of filmmaking in nearly every regard far exceeding the limitations some would impose on it due to its vernacular. I could only laugh at a review that dismissed it as sophomoric tripe and attempts supporting his argument citing the film's lack of realism in violence.
Although based on a real man this is storytelling cinema not documentary. There is an obvious element of gross exaggeration in most of the scenes of violence in Chopper, which serve a purpose (or, more specifically, several purposes). The title character is obviously incapable of telling the truth - perhaps of even hearing the truth.
It is, at first, difficult to figure out why so many are drawn to Chopper (and not at all difficult to see why so many wish him dead). Within the first few moments Eric Bana establishes Chopper's character in a way that reveals the off kilter charisma that some simply cannot resist. Those Chopper seems to get along with best are those on the periphery, those who don't invest too much whom he nonetheless seems intent on impressing. Those too involved with him likewise are locked into his doom as no one is able to keep up with the mythological figure Chopper has invented himself into.
Darkly humorous, brutal, yet not without pathos the film rightly focuses on its central character and lives up to the unlikely hero's motto: never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn. "Chopper" is a fascinating film filled several amazing performances even in smaller roles. Likewise is it filled with wonderful moments that pop right off the screen, as when Chopper's friend, Jimmy's chain smoking, junkie, white trash, pregnant fiancée stumbles to the floor to pick up a sawed off shot gun in the hallway. Genius!
It's violent nature, raw language and seemingly rotten-to-the core hero make this a film not for everyone, but those who get this sort of thing are guaranteed rich rewards.
Rating: Summary: Chopper: The Joe Martin Review Review: Chopper is the chaotic tale of Australian criminal extrordinaire Mark "Chopper" Read. He is a brutal man, but at the same time quite likeable in a strange way. Viewers should be prepared for some rather disturbing images including but not limited to apendage amputation, stabbings, shootings and the list pretty much just goes on, and on, and on. You are taken from Chopper's early days as a mad man in prison to his later days as an even madder man outside of prison. This guy was and apparently still is a class one lunatic. I said earlier he is strangely likeable. I never said I would want to meet him. Eric Bana in his freshman effort, shines. I see good things in the future for this astute young actor. I also enjoyed his role in the otherwise rather disapointing Black Hawk Down (not dissing that movie, it is good, I just wanted better.), as well as his role in the Hulk. Also on the DVD look out for interviews with the real life Chopper. Almost as entertaining as the movie.Yes I liked the Hulk. Now get off my back.
Rating: Summary: best black comedy i've seen Review: Chopper is the most funny black comedy ever. Chopper (Eric Bana)is the most notorius hitman in Australia he gets his nick name from his ears which have been amputated (you get to see the whole thing) this is a hilarious movie buy it now. This is NC17 in america and R18 in Australia for a reason it contains absurdly violent things in it.
Rating: Summary: This movie is great... Review: Eric Bana gives one of the best performances of all time. Andrew Dominik nailed the tone and made this performance sing. Nice work. A must see.
Rating: Summary: Too small a movie for such a big life. Review: Eric Bana is very good in this average movie. Chopper's life needed a more personal treatment. Why? is a question I asked far too many times watching this movie. The story bobs in an ocean of blood with no life preservers or land fall in sight. In terms of violence the director was quite inventive. The screen play needed to tell us a much bigger story. The director was up to it the budget and writer were not.
Rating: Summary: Eric Bana like you've never seen him before. Review: Eric Bana put on a lot of weight (ooh!) for this role by eating lots of donuts in the morning. he plays a prisoner who still has a criminal mind in prison. He still kills people in prison and prisoners try to kill him. They stab him. Take a piece of his ears. And still he survived. The movie was filmed off-tint and off-color. This film would have been 75% better without the off-tint/off-color stuff. Normal color and studio lighting would have been just fine. I dislike movies that are color-bleached. Brilliant performance by Eric Bana. He looks good with the extra weight. By the way, in regards to the bar scene, that is not a real male member and is not really of Eric Bana. They just wanted to bring across the real spirit of the prisoner this movie portrayed.
Rating: Summary: Interesting, but not as good as the books... Review: First of all, Eric Bana was absolutely brilliant... however I felt that overall the film did not do the books justice. A lot of important characters from Mark (aka Chopper)'s life were not even given a look in. I truly believe that Chopper's own life story has the ability to be a masterpiece, but unfortunately this film just was not up to par in my opinion. However, the film truly immortalized the legend of Chopper, which I'm happy about! (I'm related to him through his mother's side of the family, and no, I don't know him in real life!) Overall, the film is definately worth seeing, but I believe it could be better. Four and a half stars.
Rating: Summary: Look what you made me do ........ Review: Great movie based on the real life of a man called Chopper. I don't even know where to begin on describing this one. The audio was really bad where I saw this, so did miss a few details here and there but still found it extremely funny and entertaining. The idea that after he tries to kill somebody, he talks to them and even asks them if they're ok like nothing was wrong made me laugh hysterically. The story of a really disturbed, even deranged, individual and his life both on the inside and outside of prison.
Rating: Summary: funny Review: I have read the books and watched the movie and the movie makes chopper look like a comedian the movie should have starred the real Chopper Read then it might have been more realistic than what it was so i suggest stick with reading the books
Rating: Summary: old chop chop, you cheeky dog Review: I initially viewed this with hesitation - films about an Australian criminal madmen don't usually appeal to me too much. After literally being forced to watch it by a friend, I did an about turn and found myself obsessed by the true life story, that of Mark 'Chopper' Read (played with an eerie, deranged determination by aussie stand up comedian Eric Bana, soon to be seen in the Incredible Hulk) and his life in and out of prison. The film is a series of semi fictionalised events from Chopper's life, peopled by misfits & low lives, shot through with the eponymous anti hero's warped but somehow (scarily) sympathetic worldview. The dvd adds to the genius by featuring a running commentary by Chopper alongside an interview with him from a couple of years ago. And yes, from the interview you can tell he really did chop off his own ears.
