Summary: What were they thinking?
Review: I am a fan of Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice, I am also LDS and I found this movie to be a poor representation of both! The actors do their best, I suppose but they had poor screenplay material to work with. You do feel some relief when the thing climaxes but the end results are kind of a let down. I didn't like the way they changed characters in the story and some of the characters were so weak (Bingley for instance) that you just wanted to dump them from the beginning! The LDS references were very cliched and didn't do the culture justice at all. It would have been better to have left them out. I left this movie with a feeling of emptiness which isn't the way the story normally leaves me. There were some cute comedy bits, but overall, it was disappointing.

Summary: An insult to P&P fans
Review: I don't typically write reviews on movies that I really don't like. However, I feel the need to do so here.

I HATED this movie.

I rented the DVD at Blockbuster because I love Pride and Prejudice and I've seen practically every version out there. I love seeing the story told and also adapted in modern movies, such as You've Got Mail. This however is no You've Got Mail...nor is it Pride and Prejudice. I think they just named it P&P to attract the legions of P&P lovers out there. It sells itself as a modern retelling, but everything about the movie is really poorly executed. The storyline in the movie is weak, the characters and the actors who play them are weak, and the production quality is really poor. After watching it, I felt like I was duped. Seriously. I even had to watch the BBC/A&E version with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle just to get the image of this imposter out of my mind.

For those P&P fans out there in need of a fix - either rent the Colin Firth version or wait for the Keira Knightley-Matthew MacFadyen version coming out next year. Matthew MacFadyen is not really known to American audiences, but I watched him in MI-5, a British series that aired on A&E 2 summers ago, and he is HOT. And even better, he can actually act. I really can't say the same about this P&P cast.

Summary: Very cute!
Review: I had never seen this movie until I received the DVD for a Christmas gift this year. I was pleasantly surprised. I have always loved Jane Austen books and movie adaptations. Just remember in watching this, that it is not intended to mirror the book or A&E version exactly.

A lot of reviewers say this movie is only for teenage girls, but I'm a mom with two kids and thought it was just wonderful. The acting wasn't always perfect because it was a low-budget film, but I found it clever nonetheless. I think the actors did a great job in portraying their individual characters.

For those interesed, an Easter Egg is available on this Pride and Prejudice DVD. It contains the uncut version with extra LDS humor in it. You can find instructions for finding it at:
www.eeggs.com/items/42442.html
Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the screen. The first set of instructions is wrong, so you have to go to the correction listed below.

You'll be left with a good feeling after this movie is over. It's worth at least a rent and I hope many will agree that it's good enough to own. I am putting it right on my DVD shelf next to the Colin Firth A&E version.

Summary: It's an adaptation: let us be fair...
Review: I loved this modern adaptation. I thought it was far better than the other two modern adapts (You've Got Mail and Bridget Jones's Diary). I particularly liked the fact that no one slept with anyone else as I don't particularly like smut.

I have appreciation for this modern adaptation, especially considering that Seale's Darcy is very handsome. Modern adaptations, it should be known, usually have to be within that 2 hour time frame to avoid Motion Picture Narcoleptia. As an Austen fan, I really loved this. I think people should keep in mind that creative license is not a bad thing as long as it doesn't get out of control. Take my word for it and rent it.

Summary: Austen Addict
Review: I thought this movie was a valentine from years past. Okay, it wreaks havoc on the novel. I really missed Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Still, I believe the LDS overtones perfectly echo Austen's resolute blind eye to the excesses of her time. The ending was totally over the top, but rendered almost believable by the acting of the leads

Summary: A Pleasant Surprise
Review: I was not really expecting a whole lot based on some of the reviews I had read about this movie. Good thing I went ahead and rented it though, for it turned out to be one of the funniest and sweetest romantic comedies I had ever seen. Even my friend, who really does not like watching movies in general, found it to be a delight. By the time the movie ended, I had decided that it was a "must-own"...yep, that good.

Storyline Snapshot: Elizabeth Bennett's life is filled with attending college, working at the local bookstore, and attempting to perfect her first novel. She has all the companionship she needs from her 4 roommmates Lydia, Kitty, Mary, and Jane...and, of course, Lydia's dog Austen. The last thing Elizabeth needs or wants is a man complicating her life. Then Lizzie's best friend, Jane, meets the man of her dreams. Unfortunately, Jane's boyfriend, Charlie, is best friends with the high and mighty Will Darcy. This means that now Elizabeth has to keep running into the proud Darcy...and every time he seems to want to pick a fight. Sound Familiar? Well, it is. I found the references to Jane Austen's work, Pride and Prejudice, fun to pick out and the rest of the story pretty original and fun. Five stars.

Summary: Happy Man-Hunting!
Review: I was so excited to see this movie when it came out. P&P is my all time favorite book and mini series. This whimsical and updated version is wonderfully done and a joy to behold. Set in Provo, Utah, the movie pokes a little bit of fun at single life at BYU and it Utah. The adaptation from the book is very well done. Of course, a few liberties had to be taken but nothing was taken away from the original charm of the story. There were a few fun, subtle details that I didn't notice the first time around such as the restaurant "Rosings" where Lizzie and Darcy meet, and Collins' reference to his Mission President, President De Bourgh."

Elizabeth, while living with her four husband-hunting roommates, is too busy trying to become a great author to have thoughts of marriage at the moment. She meets rich, handsome and somewhat snobby Darcy and is less than taken with him. How will these two seemingly different people ever find a way of falling in love? Watch and you'll find out. You know how it ends (which actually might suprise you) but it's getting there that is all the fun.

Supporting characters are great with the charasmatic Jack Wickham, the pathetic William Collins and fun loving Charles Bingelli.(Is it any wonder Jane falls for him in an intstant?) Kitty and Lydia are a bit on the annoying side and you just feel sorry for Mary.

So go grab a giant carton of ice cream and curl up to watch this great movie!

Summary: Light and Fluffy entertainment
Review: I'm addicted to most things that have a Jane Austen theme so I couldn't resist this movie in the video store. I found it to be a light and clever adaptation of Pride and Prejudice that maintained some of the moral mores of Austen's time (a religious university setting helped this a great deal). However, it is a greatly pared down version that revolves only around the central characters of the original. Gone are nearly all the supporting characters that are some of Austen's most memorable sketches of human folly.

If you take your Austen seriously don't expect this to be a faithful or meaningful adaptation. Look to it as a charming novelty to while away a couple of hours.

Summary: Different - Yet, refreshing on its own.
Review: If you'll looking for a loyal to the book version of a movie that's been turned modern. This isn't it.

This movie has some of the same characters and the same basic plot, but other than that, its entirely different. The characters have different personalities that the ones in Austen's novels and while they are not as deep and well developed as Jane's, they are fun to watch and unique. The basic theme of marriage and society still is interweaved through out the movie as well.

Overall, I hate to call it this, but its a chick flick. However its a more intellectual chick flick and quite hilarious. I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for some light-hearted comedy and romance.

Summary: Funny and cute
Review: So maybe they didn't stay exactly true to the exact storyline. It's certainly a lot more true to the story than You've Got Mail or Bridget Jones' Diary. To set it in modern times and keep it less than two hours, I think it kept pretty close in the end. At least they stayed true to all the characters... Anyway, I thought it was really funny. I'm sending one to my sister for Christmas!
