Summary: A gem in its genre
Review: One of the best of the bunch. A perenial favorite in our household. The best of Loy and Grant, both in their prime. One of the funniest scripts to be produced during the era. Highly recommend if you want a really belly laugh or two.

Summary: So true it hurts
Review: As an architect and an owner of an older home I can relate with all the amazing and oddly true events that happen in this movie. I recommend this movie to anyone that is getting ready to build or remodel a house. Unlike the "Money Pit" which is over the top, "MBBHDH" is true to the nature and sometimes ridiculous events of home building. Rent or buy this movie, you won't be sorry.

Summary: Very funny...
Review: Often imitated but never quite surpassed, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is a classic comedy about a topic still as current now as it was in the 1940s. Silly but very funny, this movie is really great - featuring the ever hilarious Cary Grant, and Myrna Loy.

Essentially, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is about a family that decides to move to the country and get away from the overcrowding in the apartment. Instead of making life easier, however, their decision to move causes disaster after disaster. This movie is a hilarious example of how whatever can go wrong will!

Although the topic could have easily degenerated into stupidity, the script, the directing and, most of all, the cast, turn the movie into a classic. The script is witty and very funny, and it is directed with style - but mainly, Cary Grant is terrific! His double takes and reactions will never be equalled...any scene that he is in in pretty much guaranteed to be hysterical. Myrna Loy does a good job of cooling balancing Grant's screwball character, and the supporting cast is good as well.

Anyhow, this is a funny movie for the whole family - it is highly recommended!

Summary: Very Funny Comedy
Review: Cary Grant and Myrna Loy are having their dream house built and the problems they encounter with it and with jealousy are still funny after all these years. If you've ever built or remodled a house, you can identify with the inevitable problems. If not, just enjoy a very funny script and talented and beautiful stars in a heartwarming family film.

Summary: Eternal Truths - Stands the Test of Time
Review: This is one of my favorite movies of all time ... Anyone who has ever gone through the process of building a home can identify with this movie ... And even though the dollar amounts attached to the endeavor have increased MARKEDLY since 1940-whatever, the essential truths are intact. Plus, Cary Grant and Myrna Loy are fabulous together.

Summary: Great Classic Romantic Comedy
Review: This is one of those classic films which any movie buff must have. It puts together 2 leading actors (Loy & Grant) into roles that had to have been written for them. You'll laugh hard and wish that life was really that simple again!

Summary: THE CONSUMMATE MOVIE!
Review: As a Turner Classic Movie, Robert Osborn says in his introduction to this film that Cary Grant and Myrna Loy were "old pals," since they starred in two earlier films together. Loy said making the film was "pure heaven," while Grant said he liked working with Loy because, to paraphrase, she was a true actress. The film was also shot in sequence, a rarity in cinema making.

This must explain why Grant and Loy seem so relaxed and at ease with one another, and with the exemplary story and script, fine direction by H.C. Potter, and surely one of the best performances by both Loy and Grant, this film really excels. It is thoroughly interesting and enjoyable. And Melvyn Douglas is no slouch either; in fact, he also is terrific. Plus there is Louise Beavers as their housekeeper, and the two daughters are just right (played by Connie Marshall and Sharon Moffat).

The story is about affluent city people who get so cramped and frustrated with apartment living that they opt to buy a house in the country. As the film's title reveals, the viewer is ultimately in for a session of house building. All because these two delightful characters lead with their hearts despite their total inexpertise, leaving their heads somewhere back in the city. Logic and common sense are offered by their steady friend, a lawyer (Melvyn Douglas). But he always gives them too much when it is too late. Nevertheless, the result satisfies all (even if Grant's character does have to get up at 5:00 a.m. for the rest of his working life in order to commute on the only morning train), especially the film viewer. There's lots of laughs and lots of smiles. It leaves one with the sense of having had lots of fun. I think Loy and Grant did too.

Summary: How to survive building YOUR dream house!
Review: This movie, while set in a very different time, offers a universal message of wonder, hope, joy, frustration, irony, and adventure in the accomplishment of building a home. ANYONE who has ever built a house can appreciate what Mr. Blandings and his family go through to fulfill a piece of the American dream! The subtle humor, and the determination to embark on home ownership, then finding the "perfect house," and turning it into the home of their dreams is timeless. It can also help one survive one's own tribulations during the process as well: keep it all in perspective and wish YOU had someone like Cary Grant to come home with!!

Summary: Watch this movie
Review: Even if you never buy a house, this movie is hilarious. So is the Money Pit with Tom Hanks and Shelley Long. Enjoy!!!

Summary: Essential Viewing
Review: This classic masterpiece is must-viewing for anyone contracting a new house. Things will go wrong. Learning to laugh it off saves a great deal of stress. Cary Grant and Myrna Loy at their comedic best! See it and enjoy!
