Summary: The Great White Pine
Review: "Trees" is an independent film that targets a specific audience: "Jaws" fans. If you aren't a fan of "Jaws," or haven't seen it at least a couple times, then don't worry about this movie just yet and get to seeing that.

For those who have seen "Jaws" and those who are fans of it, this is a great comedy. Plenty of movies rip off "Jaws" all the time. Instead, this one pays tribute and homage to it, being made for the 25th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's shark movie. Except... the beach is replaced by a campground, it's Memorial Day instead of the Fourth of July, and the shark is replaced with a tree.

Most of the movie follows "Jaws" pretty directly, only melding scenes together for time constaints and editing choices to keep the jokes and line twists flowing smoothly. The one criticism this movie will recieve is that it sticks so closely to "Jaws" that the people unfamiliar with that film will be lost on the humor. But that's ok, because this movie isn't meant for those people. And really, anyone who's seen "Jaws" can pick up the jokes. There are links for everyone to follow. Some jokes are easily accessable by those who have seen "Jaws," such as line twists like "We're gonna need a bigger axe," or the twist on Quint's Indianapolis speech, while others are more for "Jaws"-lovers who will notice camera tricks being pulled at the same points as in the original film. Granted, the movie does get a bit silly at times, but those who know "Jaws" won't be able to help giving off a grin at each line twist.

As for the DVD, it includes a deleted scene (so short, I wonder why they didn't include it and then cut to where the final film started the scene), trailers and TV spots, and a nice featurette about the film's premiere.

This movie isn't perfect. Some of the music gets monotone with only one real instrument (though the composer makes up for this with a few good themes) and the special effects aren't much to brag about compared to what I've seen for the sequel. But it's certainly enjoyable. Pioneer pictures has done an excellent job at making an independent parody film that obviously loves its source material. That loves shines through for each joke on screen.

Review: I saw this movie when it premiered in theatres last September and it was hilarious! It is a shot by shot parody of "Jaws", with the great white shark being replaced with a great white pine! Incredible attention to detail and a taste of TREES II once the credits have rolled - I can hardly wait to own it!
