Summary: Wow! Wowie wow wow wow!
Review: 'Dead Pet' is an interesting movie, not to mention VERY independent. But it is one hell of a movie.
The plot goes as such: Jake Thomson (Kevin Cotteleer), has just flown home from Harvard for his vacation. Apart from his parents forgetting to pick him up from the airport and having to hitchhike with a scary-looking individual, everything is going just fine. Until...Jake learns that his parents have spent the rest of his college money on an operation for Miko, the family's beloved (and very old) poodle, and turned his bedroom into a horrible pink recouperation room. Jake is understandably angry, so he leaves and stays with his friend for a while. Soon, Jake comes crawling back to his parents as they forgive him and leave town for a while. Jake throws a wild party, and the next morning, Miko is found dead in the back yard. His parents kick him out of the house, and Jake is forced to get money selling knives, not to mention choose between two girls of which he is falling in love with. Meanwhile, people are quite upset about Jake's "murder" of Miko...
'Dead Pet' is a movie to be remembered. At first, I thought it was going to be a dark comedy, but it was in fact, a very intelligent independent film. The acting is quite well for an indie movie, and the plot is perfectly coherent. The pacing is perfect, not too long and not too short, and the soundtrack (entirely by some band called The Sublunars) is pretty good. Everything that you would expect from a wider-realeased indie film is in this movie, even though it looks like it was filmed for under $100.
Kevin Cotteleer should be rich. I was surprised that such a young actor/writer/director would do so well on his screen debut. If more people saw this movie, then Kevin would have aleady been making more films, instead of being a one-liner extra in 'Men In Black II'. This is a very good film, and I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a smart comedy, a la a Wes Anderson film.

Luv,
Muttz!

Summary: "Is this a cult or something?"
Review: College junior Jake Thompson (Kevin Cotteleer) comes home from Harvard for the summer to discover that his dysfunctional parents have spent his entire college fund on an operation for the family's 13-year-old poodle, Miko. What's more, Jake's bedroom is converted to a "pink shrine" recovery room for Miko. Faced with a summer earning enough money to go back to school, Jake's life unravels as he sinks into a series of misadventures.

"Dead Pet" is definite cult film material. Written, directed, and starring Kevin Cotteleer, "Dead Pet" is obviously a LOW budget film, so some elements remain unpolished and raw. But so what? If you want big budget go out and grab "Titanic". The fact that the film is low budget caters perfectly to the peculiar plot, and the bizarre characters in Jake's miserable life. It captures perfectly the culture of the gung-ho sales office of Matador knives--the empty pep talks, the trophies, & the constant pressure to get sales. Comedy is a touchy genre. Show a comedy to a dozen people, and they all have a different reaction. "Dead Pet" is NOT a slick comedy--it's funny because there's one normal person here, and that's Jake, and he's surrounded by the dysfunctional, the bizarre, and the downright psycho. "Dead Pet" is one of the funniest, laugh-out-loud, original films I've seen in ages--displacedhuman

Summary: pretty damn funny movie
Review: this movie is pretty weird, funny, and dark. It's about this guy who comes home from college to discover that his parents have spent the remainder of his college fund on an operation for the family poodle -- leaving him without the means to go back to school...he starts selling knives door to door to get back to school...it's got the vibe of "better off dead" --- unpredicable, dark, funny.. the lead actor is really funny

Summary: worth buying
Review: This movie is worth seeing. While there aren't many additional DVD features, this is worth picking up. It's really funny and I'm sure that the lead actor is going to be a star some day soon.
