Rating: Summary: A wonderful introduction to a great writer Review: I am a huge fan of Damon Runyon and this is so much in his style it's a delight to watch. The star studded cast play Runyons characters marvelously. If you like this move you will love Runyons books and vice versa.
Rating: Summary: Flappers & Gangsters! Review: In 1989, Madonna had just completed a 6-month performance of the play "Speed The Plow" on Broadway and filed for divorce from Sean Penn. She slipped easily into this film role, based on the writings of Damon Runyan. This star-studded film depicts the people, places, and events in the Big Apple on New Year's Eve 1929. It was Prohibition, which meant alcohol was illegal, but that didn't stop the beautiful people from partying like it was 1999. A very dramatic film that centered on one socialite's party - and every showgirl and con-artist trying to get there. For Madonna fans, she is very convincing as the Flapper, Hortense Hathaway, who is caught in a love triangle as she prepares for her big song-and-dance show: she performs the duet "I Surrender Dear" with actress Julie Hagerty - or was it Jennifer Grey? Regardless, Madonna's voice is very compelling over the Big-Band-genre musical style - reminicent of 1990's Dick Tracy.
Rating: Summary: classic sadly often forgotten still shines Review: This 1989 film is a truly great movie starring everyone from Rutger Haur to Madonna, and everyone (everyone!) is amazing! This film is not to be missed, despite its low-key theme and less flashy style. Excellent!
