Summary: Pleasant diversion; some interesting characters
Review: Eddie Murphy's film career seems to revolve around the misunderstood man who sticks to his principles and gets the world to see his point of view. In deference to our society's taste for explosions and violence, he has usually told this story through cop movies (48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop series). In The Golden Child he took a sidestep from this genre and added in a mystical quality. The result was generally poor reviews, and a mediocre box office, although the movie's message was pretty uplifting. After that, you had to wonder if Eddie was going to succumb to the sure fire success of the blow-em-up movies, or revisit his roots. The thing you have to remember is that Eddie is now a family man (he and his wife just had their fourth child), and I think this is affecting his choice in movies. Nutty Professor, Doctor Doolittle and Mulan all seem to be attempts by Eddie to move away from his younger days as a blue comedian to a more family orientation. In Holy Man, Eddie continues this journey. If you want explosions and cursing, you won't find much of it here; the film's rated PG. There's no nudity and I can only remember one curse - from Robert Loggia's character. The movie tells the story of a mystical man (Murphy) who enters the life of a frenzied television shopping channel executive (Goldblum). There is the typical Hollywood love story sub-plot for Goldblum and Kelly Preston's character, but make no mistake: the main story in this movie is about where true happiness lies. It's not a message that most Americans want to contemplate, but you have to admire Murphy for putting the concept out there. The story is fairly lighthearted, and there are some hysterical scenes - the frantic "charades" scene between Goldblum and Jon Cryer, for example, is priceless. At the end of the movie, you're left with more questions than answers, and while I enjoy movies like that, my guess is that it isn't neat enough for most who like everything buttoned up when the final credits roll. If you want to engage your mind, see the movie. If you just want to kill two hours, go watch Star Wars.

He prays every day in a closet to make him better and his better best. Then one day his car breaks down and he meets Eddie Murphy, alias The Holy Man. This begins a true friendship between the two and how the holy man helps the young man become his very best. He makes the young man realize that money is not everything, but love is. I won't tell you any more, because if you haven't seen this movie, I suggest you buy it right away and watch it. You won't be sorry you did, and you might just learn a lesson from it. I give this movie a whopping 5 stars.

Review: I absolutely LOVED this movie!!! I also can't believe the reviews of this movie on Amazon - there alot of cold-hearted cynics out there!!! This a movie where you need to suspend your disbelief (which movie isn't?). The movie isn't about Eddie Murphy's charachter at all - it's really about Jeff Goldblum's charachter (Ricky Hayman). He plays a hard bitten, whealer-dealer television sales executive at a not-so-high-rating home shopping station, who meets, firstly, a beautiful girl (played gorgeously by Kelly Preston), and secondly, a spiritual man on a pilgrimage (Eddie Murphy). Eddie's charachter , G, asks for nothing, but comes into Ricky's life and teaches him ( and the viewers of the shopping network) that there is something more important about life than shopping and acquiring material possessions, and becomes the hottest thing on T.V. I watched this movie with my family (husband and 3 children aged 9 to 6). We all thoroughly enjoyed it, and then danced around the lounge-room to the closing credit music by Stevie Wonder. A really up-lifting movie that brought joy to my heart!!!

Review: I found this movie to be very entertaining. Most of the cast is very good, as is the script. My only problem with the DVD was the lack of features to it. For the price you are paying, the DVD should at least hit the industry standard with some commentary or outtakes.

Summary: Not "Beverly Hills Cop", but ok
Review: I like Jeff Goldblum because he seems so alien in his mannerisms. I like Eddie Murphy because he seems so realistic, and because he has a knack for going over the top. Seems like a good pair right? Well, it does work when the two are interacting. The problem is the reality falls right out the bottom. I couldn't help but think, there's no way this guy is denegrating consumerism on a QVC-like channel and people are buying things. It just doesn't make any sense. If people are truly captivated by his guruesque preachings, then why would they pick up the phone to talk to an operator and buy something? It totally contradicts what he is saying. Other than that I thought all the players were effective, especially Goldblum. Murphy is quite restrained because of the nature of this character. This isn't really a comedy. You can tell that they tried to make things funny that weren't, like Goldblum playing charades for someone making a false telephone call. It isn't funny because the one making the call is telling "G" that he is dying, or at least in very ill health. This film tries to be a comedy, but I think it fails in that department. All the remotely humorous things are in the trailer. No this film is really some sort of spiritual dogma about the perils of consumerism. But that doesn't make for a very interesting trailer does it?
