Rating: Summary: His most beautiful film? Review: When I first saw Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy I was enchanted. A sophisticatedly sexy cast in delightfully alluring circumstances, set in a country house surrounded by foliage and wildflowers and the buzzing of nature. The prudish clothing worn at the turn of the century makes the behavior that follows even more fun. He fills the film with scenes that are just shots of the surrounding nature, with Mendelssohn's music in the background -- just beautiful. It's also one of his tightest scripts. Small cast, few sets ... a brilliant example for anyone who wishes to make good movies.
Rating: Summary: Poetry by Woody Allen Review: Woody's inspired take on one of Shakespeare's funniest and sexiest plays. Idyllic scenes of trout streams, lush meadows and dappled fawns glow with Mendelssohn's magical Midsummer Night's Dream music a joyous, throbbing accompaniment. Nature's serenity contrasts sharply with the frustrated, frenetic fumblings and longings of 3 couples: inventor Woody and his wife, the wonderfully whiney Mary Steenburgen; Tony Roberts, his doctor/friend and his liberated nurse/playmate, Julie Hagerty; and Jose Ferrer, a pompous professor, and his fiancee/protegee,Mia Farrow. The midnight moonlight reveals all and heals all, releasing pent-up passions and clarifying heart's desire. As in the original Midsummer romp, the right partners find each with the edgy implication that things could fall apart again, mere mortals and their desires being what they are. A seamlessly woven tapestry of visual delight and terrifically funny story-telling.
