Summary: The Hidden Value of Cabin Boy!
Review: The first time you watch this movie, you'll probably agree that it is pretty dumb, and from first glance seems like its only intent is cheap laughs and one-liners. When I first saw it, that's pretty much how I pictured it as well. It really didn't seem to have much depth besides the occasional imperceptive joke. Then, I watched it again and the entire point started to slowly unfold. The comedy of this movie is not found in jokes or funny scenes (though these do add to it), but in the plot and characters themselves. This is probably the single biggest reason people consider this movie useless; they don't see past the jokes. The real humor lies in the main character Nathaniel's personality and lifestyle. Nathaniel Mayweather is a resident at the finishing school for young gentlemen, where he puts everyone around him in a terrible mood on a daily basis and yet is able to keep his feminine "Fancy Lad" qualities and gentleman like lifestyle, i.e. powdering his bottom and listening to his dancing ballerina music box before he goes to bed. Ok, I would agree that it does sound pretty childish and immature. But the way it is acted out and all of the subtle things Chris Elliott does to pull it off make it awesome, and even after watching it many times I always find new things that he does that just crack me up. With this kind of comedy, you either get it or you don't. It's as simple as that.
So, to put my theories into action, I had my brother watch the movie and tell me what he thought about it. John, it's pretty safe to say, is not big into stupidity. The first time he saw it, he had a look of pure disgust on his face. As I said before, the jokes and "obvious comedy" about it are pretty dumb. So, later that month, I made him watch it with me again, this time pointing out some of the subtleties that I thought made it great. This time, I noticed a few more laughs than before, and even a couple impressions from the last time he saw it. By the third viewing, he was all over it. To get my brother to enjoy something that has no value or just bad jokes is almost impossible, and by getting him to look past that aspect of it and see into it more, he found a very laudable experience to be had and enjoys watching it to this day. So, in conclusion, if you're interested in trying to explore a new depth of comedy, this is really a great movie to try. Just make sure you watch it more than once. If you don't, you're in for a terrible surprise...

Review: This excursion into silliness is hardly worth your time. I'm a HUGE fan of Chris Elliot's fantastic TV series "Get A Life," but this idiotic film is far too moronic for even my jaded system. I'd like to give it zero stars but, alas, Amazon does not provide for such a low rating. Chris, what were you thinking? For that matter, what was the studio thinking that financed this turkey?

Summary: Hilarious
Review: This film isn't likely to crack anyone's Top 25 list, but it's a riot nonetheless. Effectively a montage of skits, most of which work, the film is a sort of twisted version of The Odyssey, starring Chris Elliot as a snooty Fancy Lad who accidentally ships port on a crude fishing boat instead of his chartered luxury cruiser. Lessons in humility and surreality abound, including a truly spectacular "outward watch" period when Elliot, half mad with exposure, meets a flying cupcake that spits tobacco juice. This is probably one of the best DVD deals I've seen here for the price, and I recommend you check it out.

Review: This is one of the few movies that really stuck in my head after I saw it and made me buy it a couple of years later. The cast is great, James Gammon is perfect for the role of an old drunkard (considering his natural raspy voice) and so is Chris Elliot for a dimwitted inbred rich boy.
Its hilarious as he gets exploited and used by the "filthy drunkards" of sailors once they get a whiff of his high falutin attitude.

Summary: Jump For Joy, It's Cabin Boy!
Review: This movie combines the best elements of "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad," "Bluebeard" and "Gilligan's Island." Chris Elliott stars as Nathanial Mayweather, a fancy lad with a sharp tongue. On his way to board his father's yacht to sail to Hawaii, he accidentally ends up at a fishing village. He first encounters an old salt, played by David Letterman. He asks Nathanial the one question that has perplexed mankind throughout the ages; "Wanna buy a monkey?" Out of spite, the old salt directs the fancy lad to the Dirty Whore. That's not a woman, it's an old fishing ship. Nathanial falls asleep in the Captain's quarters, while the crew returns and sets sail. They soon encounter a terrible storm and their cabin boy (Andy Richter) is washed overboard. The Captain has no choice and makes Nathanial the new cabin boy. Their many adventures at sea make up the rest of this fanciful movie. Chris Elliott's sarcastic sense of humor is put to good use in this film, as he pokes fun at himself while his character makes fun of his shipmates. The picture quality of the DVD is breathtaking, allowing the viewer to enjoy every detail of the incredible special effects. Unfortunately, the DVD does not include the theatrical trailer or any other bonus features.

Summary: By far the strangest, most unusual movie...
Review: This movie is rather an enigma, being a mish-mash of Greek mythology (in a [not very] modern-day retelling), satirical humor, and exceedingly strange events. I am not sure if this is a good thing, but it is certainly the weirdest movie I have seen after Brazil. While I personally found every single character not quite sympathetic, and rather despicable, the events that transpired were certainly... at best, odd, and the way the characters dealt with the situations won me over. A quick plot run-through is as follows: rich effeminate brat mistakes a fishing trawler for his daddy's yacht, and gets embroiled in a series of events: he meets Chucky, half man half fish, he meets uh... some weird, oversexed, overlimbed female, and he meets her rather large husband. And do I mean large. Oh and let's not forget the giant snowman. A mature bit of film making, employing slapstick humor while never talking down to the audience. This is a rare gem you have to see.

Review: This movies is not bad. It's just, well, not that good. I can't say it's bad or recommend it. It's just, a movie. It's funny and not funny, boring and exciting, it's hard to review it. I guess you'll just have to buy it to find out, because I can't explain it!
