Rating: Summary: Super Romantic Comedy & Minor Flaws Review: Down to Earth surprised me because I assumed I was getting ready to watch another ignorant black movie and I wasn't in the mood. I was glad to see my first impression was wrong. Down to Earth is a wonderful romantic comedy. Chris Rock does what he does best, keep it funny. He has chemistry with all the characters including Eugene Levy, Chazz Pa(? ) and Regina King.Lance ( Rock ) is a struggling comedian finally winning his chance to become something great. His life is ended when he's confronted by a lovely vision ( Regina King )while riding his bike. Little does Lance know his number is up and Keys ( Eugene Levy ) is the messenger that takes him up to heaven. Lance is given the option of returning back to earth as a rich white man. The fault with this is that when Lance becomes Charles Wellington, he doesn't KNOW anything about Charles. But shouldn't he know everything if he has BECOME Charles? I guess the filmmakers didn't see the slip-up. Once Lance claimed the body he would have automatically become the dead guy. So why was it he didn't know anything about...himself? Anyway, Charles is a " bastard " to hear Sontee Jenkins tell it. Sontee ( Regina King ) has stolen Lance's heart and the only way he can woo her is through Charles' body. That's when the fun really begins. As predicted, Lance slowly charms Sontee until she falls for him. He also ends up with a shot at playing the Apollo. Everything is where it should be and his life has never been better, except that ( it isn't his life is it?). By the time Lance gets in the true groove of being Charles, the angels find another body. Lance tries to allude them so he can keep Sontee and his newfound good fortune but it all comes to an end. But as all romantic comedies go, Lance ends up getting the girl in an entirely different form. This was predictable at times. It's a remake of Heaven Can Wait with Warren Beatty. We KNEW Lance would get the girl. We KNEW his dreams would come true. The major faults were stereotypical jokes and behavior against blacks. It wasn't a big deal in this particular film, but it was there and it wasn't needed. This film relies heavily on the differences between the black and white cultures. It does move the film along, but it gets tiresome after the fourth " see-how-we're-different " joke. The actors give convincing performances. Rock is not my first choice for a romantic lead, but he IS the funniest man in America and he was the hottest comedian in 2001. There is no question why Rock was awarded this film deal. Regina King puts in another great performance. Down to Earth is entertaining but would have been even better with a stronger male lead. But make no mistake, I love Chris Rock.
Rating: Summary: This brilliant comedian is no actor Review: Down to earth Well Chris plays a typical smart talking Afro-American who runs into death only to find out he wasn't due yet. So he is sent down to play a rich white billionaire. The rest is predictable and typical of a movie of this sort. Although Chris has certain acting problems this movie is a ride and even though it is way too predictable at times you still receive a lot of fun from the jokes and style of Chris. A disappointing DVD but isn't all bad and should only be an addition to your DVD collection if you are a Chris Rock fan. That's why it is in my DVD collection. Friday
Rating: Summary: someone kill me now Review: dreadful comedy about Chris Rock(Pootie Tang, Lethal Weapon 4) who is a dreadful comedian and he dies and goes to heaven where he meets the gatekeepers, Eugene Levy(American Pie Trilogy, Bringing Down The House) and Chazz Palmenteri(The Usual Suspects, Mulholland Falls) and Palmenteri puts rock into a dead billionares body, where he meets the guys butler, Mark Addy(A Knight's Tale, The Order), his maid, Wanda Skykes(Wanda At Large), a mad woman, Regina Hall or King, one of the 2 and people who killed the guy, Greg Germaan(Tv's Ally McBeal) and Jennifer Coolidge(both Legally Blondes and all 3 American Pie movies). starts off ok but then bellys into a swirl of stupid acting, dreadful comedy and mindnumbing music, leaves you with wanting to kill Rock because he made this movie, kill him and the director. its just blehhh, one of the worst movies of 2001. Greg Cho also stars
Rating: Summary: Down To Earth Review: Funny, Great inspiring movie. This movie will really bring you 'down to earth'!
Rating: Summary: A Good way to kill 90 minutes Review: Granted, this film is no classic, but it's a pretty good way to kill 90 minutes. The scenes where Chris Rock as the elderly White man bobs his head to the likes of rappers DMX and Snoop Dogy Dogg are quite a howl when the camera shows us how the people in the film see Rock in the body of the elderly millionaire. Also, his hilarious soliloquy to the hospital trustees is almost worth the price of admission. Regina King, the ever-hilarious Wanda Sykes, and the actor who plays Chris' manager are rather likeable in their roles. The scene where the television censor works overtime to bleep out Wanda's profane barrage on the news broadcast is a real knee-slapper. Yeah, it's not Rock's usual hardcore comedy that's filled with sociological insight, but on it's own, it's still good for a few laughs.
Rating: Summary: Better than one would expect. Review: I enjoed this mvie more than I thought I would, it had a funny plot, and almost everything about it was great...except Chris Rock's acting...he was not a very good choice for this movie..but besides that everything else was great. Down to earth is about a stuggling stand-up comidian who has fallen in love with a girl, and is suddenly hit by a truck...he gets a chance to return to the earth, but as an old billionair who is hated by most..especially the girl who he had fallen in love with! Now he tries to make her fall in love with him..but in an old man's body. Don't miss this great comedy.
Rating: Summary: Funny Review: I found this movie extremely funny and would recommend that you purchase it.
Rating: Summary: What a Laugh I Had!! Review: I just saw this movie yesterday at the theaters and believe me, it was the funniest I have seen so far this year! After being accidently killed, Lance (Chris Rock) has the oppertunity to come back to life, in another persons body!! And, when he gets desprately in love with Sontee Jenkins (Regina King) he finds himself in the biggest mess ever! What a film! Can't wait till this one comes out on video!!
Rating: Summary: A Great Movie About Being Yourself Review: I loved this movie so much! It may not be Oscar-worthy but it certainly is worthy of recognition as an awesome flick! Chris Rock is hysterical as usual and, along with an all-star cast, makes this movie so worth watching and so fun-filled! There was not a minute of this movie that I did not enjoy. But along with the slap-happy comedy and fun, a very good message is intermingled. This movie simply says that you should just be yourself. You can put someone in a different body, take away their memory, but the personality and soul of that person and the mark that leave on every person they come in contact with cannot be altered or duplicated. Your soul cannot be taken, nor can it be changed. You are who you are, so don't try to be anyone else.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed... Review: I really like Chris Rock and have been a big fan ever since I saw him in "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka." More recently his show on HBO has been a weekly source of hilarity for me. Down to Earth is a poorly made, thrown together piece of cinema. Most of the laughs in the film you have already seen by viewing the trailers or tv commercials. It's pretty obvious the Rock toned down his usually outlandish style in order to appeal to white mainstream audiences. The result is highly unsuccessful. Not only is the movie not funny, its just plain boring. Made by any other comedy actor (except Jim Carey), Down to Earth would have been a passable rental but I've just come to expect a lot more from Chris Rock. This is cable fare at best.
