Without all the schemes Ralphie cooks up to get his Red Rider gun, it wouldn't be feel like christmas. A must have for parents with youngsters, because it will become a good christmas memory in the years to come!!!
Rating: Summary: One of the best Christmas movies ever! Review: "It's a Wonderful Life", the 1947 version of "Miracle on 34th Street", and one version or another of "A Christmas Carol" are splendid Christmas classics, with magical storylines involving angels, ghosts, or even Kris Kringle himself. To this list of time-honored motion pictures, we should add the delightful 1983 comedy "A Christmas Story". Based on excerpts from humorist Jean Shepherd's book "In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash", our story revolves around Ralph Parker, a regular boy growing up in northern Indiana during the 1940s. One Christmas season, young Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) can think of nothing else but that one special gift he so intensely desires: a Red Ryder BB rifle. While facing his many detractors who warn him that such a gift would shoot his eye out, life goes on for our bespectacled hero in the form of school, the neighborhood bully, the "Little Orphan Annie" radio show, and everyday manic in the Parker household. Veteran actor Darren McGavin steals the show as Ralph's gruff but likable Old Man whose favorite winter hobby appears to be fighting the house furnace. As quite a contrast to the Old Man, Ralph's mother (Melinda Dillon) may play the role of the quintessential 1940s housewife, but she shows smarts and holds her own as a peacemaker and authority in the house (it seems Mrs. Parker's nightly dinner menu always consists of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and red cabbage). Completing the family cast is Ian Petrella as Ralph's whiny younger brother Randy. Directed by Bob Clark, "A Christmas Story" effectively brings out the world through the eyes of a child, especially the heady, anxiety-ridden days of the Christmas season. Shepherd himself co-wrote the screenplay and narrates the picture as an adult Ralph (watch for his unbilled cameo appearance as a department-store customer). Without compromising on its overall hilarity, the picture is nostalgic and sentimental as well (important qualities for a Christmas movie); practically every scene is a true gem. In our yearly Christmas potpourri of live-action and animated pictures, "A Christmas Story" is an essential ingredient.
Rating: Summary: Hillarious, excellent holiday family movie. Review: Peter Billingsly stars in a movie aabout a kid who wants the perfect present and instead gets it and a lot more on the holidays.
Rating: Summary: Worth 10 Stars & A Dozen Candy Canes Review: One of the best Christmas comedies ever made! Absolutely PRICELESS and a must-have for holiday video collectors. You will laugh yourself sick!
Rating: Summary: The greatest Christmas movie of all time Review: Ralphie's plight is the most hilarious in any movie of all time. Don't forget "You'll shoot your eye out!"
Rating: Summary: There's so much to like about this movie. Review: I'm sixty-three so the time period of Ralphie's childhood is the same as mine. Also I grew up listening to Jean Shepherd on the radio in Cincinnati. The whole feel of the movie is wonderfully accurate for the time including the following: the balky furnace, the schoolyard, the schoolroom, the teacher, the incredibly disabling winter clothing, the alleys the kids walk through, and the desire by most little boys for the Red Ryder rifle (advertised on the back of every comic book). One other thing I noticed as our family watched some of the marathon last year was that the outdoor scenes have lighting that makes you feel that you're right there... and there's a scarcity of annoying music. They got everything right! (What did become of Peter Billingsley?) MT in Ithaca
Rating: Summary: My fav, It's the best!!!!!!! Review: This movie is a "classic", I watch it atleast twice a year, just to laugh. It is even better without commercial interuptions.
Rating: Summary: This Is Our FAVORITE!!! Review: My husband & I have watched this movie dozens of times over the years & it's definately our favorite Christmas movie. It's hard to believe it was made in 1984 because the costumes, settings, automobiles, everything, is so well done that your sure you're in 1940's mid-west America. It's simply a classic---not to be missed!
