Summary: Everlasting ... albeit too short
Review: I am constantly on the lookout for anything new starring Billy C., whatever that may be. I took home this video with the usual anticipation that accompanies any of Connolly's performances, however although the film is pretty good in itself, I take the greatest of exception to the fact that it is marketed dishonestly. And at this point I dare you to display this review! Greater emphasis has been given to the participation of Mister Connolly, that his time on-screen warrants. This is my gripe and this is the reason of my awarding only three stars. Once more we see greed at play: where the producers want to make the most of a famous name, for all the TOO OBVIOUS reasons. It is okay! We LIKE the guy! I don't mind buying anything for as long as I like it. Billy Connolly, I like, almost everything he does I like ( I cannot say " everything" because I haven't seen everything); but ALL his work that I have seen I enthusiastically endorse. The guy is a fenomenally gifted performer and, mark my words, to use an old chestnut ,"we ain't seen nuthin' yet " ! So what am I bellyaching about already? This: on the cover of the videotape box, the stuff is worded so as to give the distinct impression that Billy is cast in a MAJOR role, whereas he is not. I care not a fig that his character is relevant to the story, or even essential or whatever else one wishes to add ( I can HEAR the producer mouthing off here!). He , Connolly that is, does not appear for more than a half a dozen scenes ( BRIEF scenes at that). Too little to justify the billing as one of the principal protagonists. More correct, factually as well as ethically,. would have been to say: with the parfticipation of B.C. in a cameo role. We STILL would rent the video; subsequently we STILL would buy it; we STILL would relish it. BECAUSE WE LIKE THE GUY. What we object to are these ... attempts at [taking advantage of] the consumer ( us ).
But what about the movie? The movie is fine! Personally i found well directed and produced. The storyline is intriguing and well stitched together. It is very likely that AS A PIECE OF CINEMA, it deserves more thazn three stars, but not from me.

Summary: One of the funniest movies of all time
Review: I dont believe this movie got to much theatrical hype,i have no idea why! This is the funniest movie i've seen in awhile laughing outloud several times which i rarely do this movie is also more than laughs it has a great story there's plenty of reviews here for you to read about the story,i would like to tell you though the dvd is great there is no special features really except cast and crew info but the picture is great and it does support dts to my suprise upon purchase.A+

Summary: Barry Levinson's little U.K. movie has its moments
Review: I picked up this Irish movie with its funny title, An Everlasting Piece, for several reasons. It was a very slow period for video releases, and the other choices were terrible. It was directed by the very American Barry Levinson, who's best known for very American movies such as The Natural, Bugsy, Wag the Dog, Rain Man and Diner. I knew it had had good reviews but had opened last Christmas in a few cities to terrible business. So, I was curious. I enjoyed the movie, but I can see why it doesn't have wide appeal. It takes place in Northern Ireland in the 1980s, at the height of the Catholics vs. Protestants, IRA vs. Great Britain 'troubles'. This conflict is not widely understood outside the British Isles, being a problem peculiar to that region. I doubt the average American understands what the fighting was about. I'm not entirely sure the average Irishman or Englishman does either. The characters speak in an Irish brogue which almost requires subtitles for some viewers. On the other hand, An Everlasting Piece is a charming and eccentric comedy that adds some insight into the period. I can see why Levinson was attracted to the screenplay, and he does an able directing job. Colm [Barry McEvoy] is a young Catholic man who lives with his family in a little old house that's sits right against the peace wall, a hideous structure that was built to separate Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods, due to a great deal of street fighting between the two factions. His girlfriend, Bronaugh [Anna Friel], gets him a job as a barber in a psychiatric hospital. There he meets a Protestant barber named George [Brian F. O'Bryne]. One day the two find out that one of the patients, aptly called The Scalper [Billy Collins] because he went too far in trying to perfect his product, used to have a monopoly on the male hair piece market in Northern Ireland. They talk him out of his list of clients and start their own business, The Piece People. It turns out they have serious competition from a rival business named Toupee or Not Toupee, and the company that makes the wigs announces there will be a contest to decide will get a distribution contract. Colm and George find out that this is no easy task because most of their clients definitely have a screw loose. Along the way, they have some wild adventures, including encounters with both the IRA and the British Army. The movie never quite makes it point about the madness of war, but it does make some keen observations about the Irish and the British, as well as the fragile male ego. The cast is delightful, as long as you can understand what they are saying. Barry McEvoy also wrote the screenplay. He's a talented guy, and we can expect to see more of him in the future.

Review: I ran across this movie while flipping channels, and absolutely loved it. I've you liked The Full Monty and Waking Ned Divine, give this little gem a shot. Who'd think a story about two toupee salesmen in Northern Ireland would be so funny? With a great script, great acting, and under director Barry Levinson's assured guidance, it all turns out beautifully. And, you'll never hear louder cows in all of your life!

Summary: An absolutely magnificent movie!
Review: I rented this almost by accident, simply choosing it at my local store because it looked cute. I was simply wiped out. The subject matter, the portayals, the depth and breadth of this movie, along with the soundtrack, just knocked me out. Being Irish American, this movie touched me in ways that very few movies ever do, and I was dumbfounded as to why it wasn't trumpeted as a major accomplishment when it was released. This has instantly become one of my favorite movies of all time, and to anyone that loves a sweet, smart comedy or a deeply touching study of friendship and loyalty, and ESPECIALLY anyone who has any interest in the 'troubles' in Northern Ireland, I tell you this: You MUST own this movie. And tell all of your friends as well. This is a precise shining gem of a movie, do not miss it. I truly love this movie, could you tell? Trust me on this, get it. Slan go foill!

Summary: The best I've seen in years!
Review: I rented this movie from the local Blockbuster. They only had one copy. I never heard of the movie but it looked interesting. What a shock when I started watching it! The best movie I have seen in years! I laughed, I cried, I got disgusted. It was BRILLIANT! The soundtrack is great. The contrast in visuals from the sea to the graffiti on the walls of the buildings in Belfast, made me think. It is good to be able to laugh through the tears. I'm buying my own copy. My entire family watched this film and they all said it was the best! Dreamworks should have advertised it more! Watch it, tell your family and friends.

Summary: Charming!
Review: I stumbled on this video at the library and checked it out simply because I was attracted to the picture of a wig sitting on the earth. I'm so glad I did. An Everlasting Piece skillfully weaves the conflict in Northern Ireland with the story of two friends who set out to run a hair piece business. Although a few scenes are a bit pointless and seem to have been added simply to make Colm's family appear eccentric--the mother with the knickers on her head, the naked boy on the couch--these scenes are so charming that you forgive their irrelevancy. As an Irish American, I found the scenes that focused on the troubles to be particularly poignant. I highly recommend this movie.

Review: I was pleasanlty surprised to find out Barry Levinson had made a movie I hadn't seen in the theaters; got the disk and am just wondering why this didn't come out in the theaters... I am a huge fan of both Levinson and Irish comedies and I thougt the movie was a great example of both. check it out, it's a rare find. Thumbs up to Barry once again. Cheers mate
