Summary: Easy to relate to
Review: I'm a 17-year-old girl, and I found it so easy to relate to the story. Most girl love their mothers, but there are so many times when they just want to get out of the house because they can't stand something that their mom said or did. In this movie, Natalie Portman showed her wonderful acting skins to pull through to the audience the story about a girl who grew up with only her mother. Although their relationship wasn't perfect, they somehow made it work after moving away from home.

Summary: Sappy and bad
Review: The only thing I like about this movie is that Susan Sarandon is in it she makes this movie work. Evrey one alse in this movie seems like a extra that was not needed exept for potman but anyone could have played her part she was so lifeless with no emotion hafe the time a 5 year old could of pulled of her charictor. This movie is not worth your money I only give it 4 stars because the story was not all that bad and Susan Sarandon pulled it off.

Summary: This Film Screams "Chick Flick!"
Review: I liked the movie, I really did. The acting was good, the plot was (somewhat) believable and the outcome makes everybody happy. This is a story about sacrifice. A mother sacrifices for her rebellious daughter (at least at the end).It reminded me a little of Cher's "Mermaids". If you recall, Cher's character had a slight falling out with Winona Ryder's character (who plays her daughter). The daughter rebels against the mother's odd way of life (I'll never forget the way Cher's character feeds her family little sandwiches shaped like objects). But the mother truly loves her daughter and only wants the best for her. It is my opinion that the mothers in both movies are still attempting to live out their childhood fantasies. However, being a mother sometimes interferes with that. You can't be responsible AND be irresponsible at the same exact time. I would rent this movie when you have a somber evening, maybe while it is raining outside. I don't see many men liking it (call me a sexist) but I think most women would.

Summary: Despite negative reviews, this movie is a delight.
Review: I express my disagreement with those who thought this movie was a bland character study and for its rather episodic structure. I read the book and believe that movie accurately (with many cuts of details) portrays the characterization of the mother and daughter. Although some of the controversial aspects of the book such as the lesbian scene between Ann and a young girl for whom she takes child porno pictures have been removed from the film, the brilliant characterizations brought to me a certain enjoyment and identification with each of the character's plight. Wayne Wang does a solid job of mirroring the realism of life by eliminating the plot and painting the delicate lives of these characters. One can see how the daughter matures by learning from the negative experience of her mother and the clear details are quite extraordinary. I plan to get the videotape as soon as it hits the street.

Review: Some..certain..people called it a chick flick, but I love it anyway! It was really depressing, but of course, everything turns out OK, and I think anyone would like this movie, as long as you don't cry to easily.

Summary: Tedious overlong character study
Review: This is a tedious, overlong character study about the dysfunctional relationship between an irresponsible and self centered mother and her pouty teenage daughter. Adele August (Susan Sarandon) leaves her home in Wisconsin and drags her 14 year old daughter (Natalie Portman) to a new life in the bright lights of Los Angeles. The problem is it is the same old hopeless life in a brand new place. There is really no story here, just a series of situations for mother and daughter to bicker over so we can be convinced how intense a love-hate relationship they have with one another. The characters spent the entire movie trying to confuse us as to which of them was more immature. This is a classic example of how good acting cannot save a bad screenplay. Both Sarandon and Portman did an outstanding job of playing their characters. But each of them were playing characters that were so repellent that there was nowhere to turn for relief. Of the two, Portman evoked a sense of pity for poor Ann, who had to be stuck with such an obnoxious and putrid mother. Admittedly, I have to give Sarandon credit for doing such a fine job of making Adele so distasteful. I rated this film a 3/10, despite fine performances by both leads. I just don't feel it is entertaining to spend two hours watching two puerile characters snipe at one another. I would only recommend this movie to women who had bad relationships with their mothers (probably a large demographic now that I think of it) for the obvious identification factor. Perhaps this film will make them feel a little better that they are not alone in their frustration and anger. For all others, I would suggest pushing bamboo under your fingernails as an attractive alternative to this torturous film.

Review: If you and your Mom, or your daughter, were best friends and at times worst enemies ... this is the movie for you. So real and yet touching and artistic. I loved it!

Summary: My Life, My Life, My Life.
Review: I just got done watching "Anywhere But Here",litterally about 2 min. ago, and I knew I had to write a review ofsome sort. This movie I can relate to so much. A few things aredifferent though like I am male, I moved from the westcoast to the eastcoast, and I don't have such a crazy mother, but aside from those few differences this movie is my life soooooooo much. I highly recommend this movie to everyone out there it is a very touching and deep movie, but not too deep. I think Suzan Sarandon did a "elegant" performance as Ann's (Natalie Portman) mother. She has the look same as Natalie P. and she plays a great crazy mother :) As for Natalie Portman, she is the most talented and versitile young actress on the face of this planet (throw in a few extra planets if it makes you feel better) she has such a great look she can look 14 (in the beginning of the movie) or 18 (at the end or the movie), and her acting ablity is "off da chain". She had just the right expressions and emotions, not too much and not too little, to get even me to shed a tear or 1,000 (I never cry, except for Simon Birch but come on who didn't). All around this movie is GREAT! It has it all, it is hilarious, it is very emotional, and it can drive you nuts :) I LOVED IT!

Review: Once again Natalie Portman does a terrific job. She and Susan Surandon combine to make a terrific movie. The movie would have been perfect if their wouldn't have been so much crying. The movie actually was too sad. But Natalie Portman makes the movie shine with her incredible acting skills. She is truly the best actress i have seen to this day. This is a movie that i would suggest to anyone!

Summary: Great gal, Great Movie
Review: I rolled out of bed to see the movie the day it was released mainly for the talented (and painfully cute) actress Natalie Portman. I went simply to satisfy a schoolboy crush, but was also treated to a movie that brought a light of joy to the pains of growing up. I like to be lengthly when I describe things, but the best review is a short one so: I laughed, I cried (a little), and I stayed interested till the end. It was worth the ticket fare then, and it's worth the spot on the movie rack now. Enjoy.
