Summary: Beyond a "chick flick"
Review: Yes, it's true. This film is more for the feminine crowd. Just as "Die Hard" is the prototypical "guy film", "Ya-Ya" caters to the females of the world. But dig in further and you'll find a film that hits home with anyone who has had major problems with the way their parents brought them up. Moreso for females than males, but it can relate to both. No question about it.I was reluctant to watch this film, especially after the first five minutes. But I hung in, and was rewarded with a great film. I'll take my "Die Hard" or "Star Wars" any day. But this is one hell of a film, too. And guys can learn just how to be supportive to the women they love. This is a must-see.

Review: The hilarious Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood is a gem in the world of chick flicks. I normally do not enjoy movies like this, but this one had me laughing out loud. Ellen Burstyn is amazing, and Sandra Bullock and Ashley Judd are marvelous as well.

Review: You always know that a great book is going to be largely compromised when it comes to film. I often avoid seeing the film just because I don't want it to compromise my own vision of the story. This film doesn't bring the depth of the novel to the big screen, but it does seem to contain the essence of the novel. The tone is right; the roles are well cast; the overall sense of novel pervades the movie. But I was a little sad to see some of my favorite parts changed or missing. And people who have read the book understand the film at a level that others don't. Ya-Yas has some first rate performances. James Garner does so much with his responsive, largely non-verbal role. And the casting of the Ya-Yas themselves is fantastic. Each actress is so well chosen. Fionnula Flanagan really brought a whole other dimension to the role of Teensy. Ellen Burstyn captured Vivi. Ashley Judd gives a real and gritty performance. I think if we put Sandra Bullock and Rebecca Wells in a blender, we'd get the perfect Sidda. When I see these actors now, I think of them as their role in Ya-Yas. That tells you something. For these reasons, I'd recommend watching the film. But most of all, I'd read the book.

Review: This film hit close to home for me. I loved this movie all the way through. It was fast paced, tearful at times, and very funny. At the end, while on the porch swing, Vivi says something to Sidda, that I think every daughter would like to hear from her mother, especially those who've had turbulent relationships.

Summary: A male view - for husbands who need to endure it
Review: I was forced to watch YaYa in exchange for making my wife watch Fight Club. I'm not the film's target audience, but here's my two cents: YaYa Sisterhood could have been a great film that transcended its "women's" genre if the authors had refocused the storyline on the genetic mental illness (apparently bipolar disorder or some type of psychotic depression) that ran in the family. As an exploration of mental illness - the agony of depression and the terror of inheriting "Mom's disease" - the film would have been a thought-provoking 2 hours that a man could tolerably sit through. The movie would also serve a socially-redemptive purpose of educating the ignorant American public about the true nature of mental illness as neurologically-based, genetically determined sickness just as real as cancer or Parkinson's disease. Unfortunately, YaYa very much wants to be a women's film, and 90% of the film is pure LifeTime original, full of female victimization and a few pointless male bashing references. (To its credit, however, there's no horrible ogre of a man as the main villian; in fact, a father gruffly protects his daughter from her manic depressive mother.) The film spends no real time exploring the deeper issues raised by the spectre of mental illness, and instead tries to become a lighthearted story of intergenerational bonding. Curiously, YaYa decides to make its characters - who are 100% Anglo-white, southern bells - Roman Catholics without giving them any hint of Irish, Italian, or Polish culture. This didn't help the characters seem realistic, and I'm getting a little tired of Hollywood's bizarre assumption that Roman Catholics are somehow more interesting than the rest of us. (To be fair, movies like a "Walk to Remember" and the much-anticipated upcoming "To End All Wars" may signal that Hollywood has finally realized that Protestants are every bit as interesting, spiritual, and cinematically captivating as Romanists.)

Review: I like Sandra Bullock ! But this film was so boring , I should have fallen asleep ... I didn't - this was Christmas Eve ! Why I gave it 3 stars instead of 2 ? Because my girlfriend ordered " Eight Legged Freaks " just to make up for the torture of watching this very boring , very fake "film".
I thought that it is a " chick's movie "...I watched it ... turned to my girlfriend to say how boring it was ... she was trying to take all of my sleeping pills at once... to avoid my comment...

Review: my wife wanted to see this so we rented the other night and i am glad we did because i also enjoyed it. but movies about family coming to gather and the freindship just touched me. i don't know why this put down so much i think there was some good acting and i alway like most movies james garner is in. i think this this movie was funny and sad at the same time i know my wife was'nt crying alone i had tears rolling down my face also.this movie is'nt just for women it for anyone who enjoys a good movie.
