Rating: Summary: Hey gasket! Review: My ability to sit through movies I have not seen the beginning of has rewarded me once again with this little known (in the States anyway) and largely hilarious comedy. I caught it about halfway through and still enjoyed it enough to look for it on here. I highly recommend it for medicinal purposes. I'll never look at curling, or those magnificent beavers, the same way again. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: English type movie about... curling!! Review: Some of you might not even know what curling is, but it is big in Canada and some northern European countries. The object is to slide big stones over ice to some kind of bulls eye... Just wait for the next winter Olympics! This story is about a great team that had to split up after the captain cheated. Ten years later their coach has died and in his will asks them to once more try and win the title. 'Men with brooms' feels like some of the great comedies from Brittain in the last 10 years like 'The Full Monty', 'Billy Elliot' and 'Bend it like Beckham'. The characters are down-to-earth but have a comic twist. Some running gags like trying to get pregnant are also hilarious, especially because the guy is the biggest dork around. It's fun, maybe not worth the price though. Oh yeah, Leslie Nielsen (Naked Gun) also plays in this movie and is funny.
Rating: Summary: Watch it for a few brilliantly inpired details! Review: The events commentator for the Golden Broom bonspiel in "Men With Brooms" is priceless. It rates right up there with the Mike Meyers turn as the hockey color commentator who has taken a few too many pucks to the head in "Mystery, Alaska" and Fred Willard as the dropped-on-his-head-at-birth dog show color commentator in "Best of Show." For curling fans, what Lennox does with a bottle of hooch, a match, a curling stone and a metaphor is a pretty beautiful setup. The notion of a curling star from Butte complete with groupies, cheerleaders and an entourage is just too funny for words. The drunken ruminations of the main characters as they sit oblivious as great huge cauldrons empty out behind them is a sight to behold. Tremendous movie, great fun, Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: I've got a soft spot for this movie Review: The first time I saw this,I hated it,I thought is was dull and boring. But after reviewing it again on DVD,I realized that it was actaully a good movie.Funny, charming, cute and at sometimes crude film but enjoyable none the less. Also check out the soundtrack loaded with great Canadian music.
Rating: Summary: Not just for Canadians Review: This is a brilliant piece of Canadiana that has widespread appeal. It is hilarious and proves once again that Canadians are secure enough about their identity to poke fun at themselves. Paul Gross is an unbelievable talent(one only needs to note how many times his name appears in the credits)who has impeccable comedic and dramatic timing. Americans should get a real kick out of the endless stereotypes at work in this film. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Men with Brooms Review: This is a great movie. Paul Gross and the others did a great job of it. Not only is it funny it is also enjoyable to watch as well. And it's a sport that is doing so well here in Alberta and all over the Country. It is great to see Paul doing so well with his career. He is a great actor. And it is also nice to see Canadian Actors doing a Canadian Production that was also done in Canada. I do hope Paul Gross may do another Production in Canada sometime soon. Paul you are very Talent man with a great gift that you are able to show in plays, movies and when you are doing difference things on TV. Paul keep up with the great work you do. I do enjoy watching you as a actor in the difference projects you are doing or may do in the future.
Rating: Summary: Deserves zero stars - cliché festival Review: This is supposed to be "Canada packaged for American audiences", with curling as the main subject. Yes, it is what Ebert calls a CLIDVIC - "Climb from Despair to Victory" standard sports cliché, which is already bad enough... BUT it is also a romantic comedy, and a "everyone has problems that require lots of soul-searching" story, both of which miserably fail. To add insult to injury, its ending is even worse and more simplistic than a standard CLIDVIC ending. Considering all the good Canadian movies available right now (get your hands on "L'Odyssée d'Alice Tremblay" if you can), this is a totally worthless movie and its producers should be executed for treason.
Rating: Summary: Fun, unusual romantic comedy Review: You don't have to be Canadian, or know anything about curling, to appreciate the humor inherent in this film; all you need is an appreciation of how sometimes, life takes some interesting turns. If you like any of the actors in this film - Paul Gross, Leslie Nielson, Molly Parker play the leads - be prepared to see them in a different light. The story is of four friends who try to achieve a lifelong goal of curling glory, and along the way attempt to deal with some everyday stresses: the women in their lives, low sperm counts, murderous thugs, unexpected legacies, jilted lovers, and oh, yeah, that curling thing. :-)
