Rating: Summary: I've met the stars and still the movie wasn't great. Review: I met the stars before the movie released, and though I love each of them individually, this movie was clearly a couple of guys having fun with the "big" camera. I loved all the sci-fi quotes and even found myself catching a mis-quote. I loved Bill Shatner. He helped create most of his character and in the end the movie was nothing like the original scriped. (that was unfortunatly a good thing)
Rating: Summary: Only watch this movie if it is truely "free" Review: The documentary extra of "Free Enterprise" makes it clear that the filmmakers thought they were making a romantic comedy about two science fiction fans who meet their idol, William Shatner. Unfortunately, the film is neither romantic nor comedic. At best, "Free Enterprise" could be considered a bad, 1990's, autobiographical, Woody Allen movie with all of the angst and none of the humor. It isn't even a story about science fiction fans who meet meet their idol. That, as "Galaxy Quest" proved, has great fodder for gentle humor. Speaking as an SF fan myself, these soon-to-be 30 year-old boys are just neurotic, self-absorbed teenagers, not people who revel in fantastic possibilities. Speaking as a psychologist, I'd make a perfect therapist for these two, thoughts I'd rather not experience when I'm looking for some entertainment.
Rating: Summary: Caution - Defective DVD's Review: I am really unable to rate the movie fully since the DVD does not play past Chapter 20. I have tried this on my computer's DVD-ROM and on a Sharp DVD player, and neither will play past Chapter 20. I have written to Mindfire Entertainment for a replacement copy but have heard nothing from them. After I thought it was only my copy, a person on a Trek newsgroup wrote that he had the same problem with the Free Enterprise DVD. While the DVD seems to have a lot of extras, it also seems to have bugs so that it does not play on some DVD-ROM's and DVD players, so CAVEAT EMPTOR.
Rating: Summary: A Surprisingly Funny and Touching Look at Sci-Fi Fans Review: Free Enterprise is really two stories woven together. One story is a romance about a couple of hard core sci-fi fan trying to find true love, despite the handicap their passion for sci-fi seems to be with most of the women they meet. The other story is about the same two hard core sci-fi fans meeting their life-long idol, William Shatner. This is a truly funny movie that also works very well on several other levels. As viewers, we quickly are engaged by these fascinating, multi-faceted characters and the complexities of their lives. There is a large cast of supporting characters and they are quirky and engaging, also. The story is fairly predictable but the outstanding performances by all involved, especially Shatner, makes Free Enterprise thoroughly enjoyable. The DVD is a marvelous example of what the medium can do. The video and audio are exemplary. The video could only be improved by being presented in an anamorphic transfer. What makes this DVD special, however, is the huge variety of extras. The story's dialogue features a constant stream of pop culture references, most of them to sci-fi like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Logan's Run, but also other movies, television shows and science fiction books are referenced, as well. Spotting these references adds a whole different level of entertainment for fans of sci-fi. The DVD assists by providing a subtitle track that explains the references and a glossary of terms. Other extras include a very informative "making-of" featurette with extensive interviews with the producer and director (who served as models for the two lead characters), an extensive selection of deleted scenes, screen tests, and the full music video of William Shatner and Rated R doing "No Tears for Caesar." The writer/director/editor (Robert Meyer Burnett) and the writer/producer (Mark A. Altman) provide a fascinating and informative audio commentary track. You will want to watch this movie at least three times, once by itself, once with the terminology subtitles turned on, and once with the commentary turned on. I highly recommend this DVD. It is an affectionate but funny look at sci-fi fans, a highly entertaining movie, and a great DVD.
Rating: Summary: A Bomb Review: 5 Stars Ha! Are the reviewers all friends of the directors? Sorry, I thought it was a bomb. I just thought it did not work at all. Save your money and buy some real StarTrek DVDs because there is nothing here for StarTrek fans here. This is the last time I buy a DVD going on the reviews. :-(
Rating: Summary: Amateur hour Review: A rip-off of Swingers and Kevin Smith movies. It's painfully obvious from the director's and writer's commentary that these guys know nothing about making films or storytelling. One is a bad film editor and the other writes comic books and "Star Trek" journalism. Very little was actually funny, and the drama was filled with false notes and awkward dialogue. Go rent/buy Swingers or Chasing Amy instead!
Rating: Summary: I rented this movie, thinking is was going to suck, but..... Review: It turned out to be one of the best movies I've seen in a long. I especially loved it because like me, the characters were just turning 30 and were raised on sci-fi. This movie is intelligently written. Besides all the great lines, you get to see all sorts of cool sci-fi stuff. William Shatner gives a surprisingly good preformance. Besides Shatner's acting you get to see Shatner's singing abilities as well. His singing scenes beat the sing-along-with Captain Kirk web page. I never thought he would agree to do a movie like this. I'm glad he did. The movie is close to perfect(every sci-fi reference but Dr. Who). Halfway through the movie, I decided I had to buy Free Enterprise. Heck, I think I'll finally buy a DVD player just for this movie!
Rating: Summary: Great fun for sci-fi fanatics Review: This movie is about the lives of sci-fi fans. It truly reminded me of how my friends and I act, including amassing huge movie collections and making obscure references to sci-fi. About half of the lines of dialog contain some kind of reference to other movies and TV shows, so many in fact that there is a subtitle track that explains all of the references. The many extras on the DVD are terrific, including commentary, making-of documentary, and a glossary of terms used in the movie. I laughed throughout. I completely enjoyed it.
Rating: Summary: A truly hilarious romp that's out of this world Review: This is one of those flicks that I walked by in the video store for weeks until finally I decided to rent it. "Free Enterprise" is a hilarious look at the lives of obsessive fans of the science fiction/comics age. With its references to Star Trek, Logan's Run, and other sci-fi films it is a laugh riot. William Shatner has a bit role as himself playing the complete opposite of what the loyal fans expect. Overall the film has a Swingers like atmosphere but instead the dialogue comes from the mouths of the geeks. Not exactly Revenge of the Nerds but its no Miami Vice either. Anyone who likes all those classic sci-fi movies or can remember them should enjoy this film.
Rating: Summary: Warp Factor NONE Review: In MY HUMBLE OPINION: This film stinks. Sorry I can't jump on the bandwagon, but I truly hated it. I found it to be poorly acted & executed, amateurish and very unfunny. Not to mention BORING. I spent more time looking at my watch in the theatre that I did at the screen. Shatner is completely wasted in this film, so much fun could have been mined from him playing himself, but instead the filmmakers swerved the narrative line into an oh-so predictable love story. Also, the "Star Trek" and comic book geeks portrayed in this film couldn't be farther from the real thing. Don't waste your time with this one. Instead check out "TREKKIES" a truly funny look at "Star Trek" fans.
