Summary: Good dumb guilty pleasure fun.
Review: Definatly not a quality flick, the directing is all over the place, preoccupied with sex and vomit, not a good performance in the entire film. All of these things HELP Detroit Rock City. It's good, dumb fun to sit back to and have a few laughs with a couple good tunes thrown in for good measure.

Summary: This is not just a teen gross-out movie.........
Review: Sure it is not high art, but to focus on comparisons with other recent teen flicks is to miss the point. Maybe you have to understand the mythology surrounding Cobo Hall and the passions of Kiss fans. Characters are made funnier by the endless in-jokes and music references, so if you are a member or once were a memeber of the Kiss Army then welcome to a great nostalgia trip. If you were into Disco then I hope you like being laughed at, while if you were expecting jokes about vomit then there is only 1 really to speak of. So sit back and get ready to........ ROCK AND ROLL ALL NITE - AND PARTY EVERY DAY!!!!

Summary: Nostalgic and average, but enjoyable
Review: If you're a Kiss fan -- and I am -- this is a freaking GREAT movie. But as a movie on its own merit it's at best an average attempt at the coming-of-age tale of four boys on their way to capture the Holy Grail. I'll get the bad stuff out of the way first...

The script has a good story, but the dialogue is mediocre most of the time. Having the script polished up by a veteran writer would have made this a fantastic movie. There's not enough character development and too many predictible "Oops-there's-another-easily-avoided-circumstance-bound-to-cause-our-heroes-problems" scenarios. Of course, these circumstances are the basis for the whole movie, but they could have been made a bit more plausible.

The "bad guys" - notably the anti-Kiss mother, twisted schoolmaster and Catholic priest - are cardboard cutouts of the worst possible stereotypes and are almost impossible to watch. Growing up amidst the hieght of the anti-Kiss crusade, I'll be the first to admit there were some pretty strange folks out there picketing concerts. But they were more frightening than funny.

Now the good stuff.

The boys are funny. Their exploits - no matter how stupid - are pretty humorous. The scene with our heroes practicing as a Kiss copy band in the basement will certainly tug at the hearts and minds of any Kiss fan. How many guitars have been purchased and played by no-talent fans just because of Ace Frehley? These guys exemplify that spirit in a wonderfully entertaining manner. The accuracy of the period references is another thing that really "makes" this film. From the opening scene where mom is sifting through vinyl (!) recordings of Manilow, the Carpenters, etc., the film is full of tidbits all too familiar to those of us who grew up in the seventies. My personal favorite is the gold Trans-am full of decked-out disco enthusiasts driving down the highway singing and "acting" to David Naughton's tragic "Makin' It." I laughed out loud and any chiold of the 70's will too.

The final scene, wherein the boys get into the show (hardly a spoiler here) is good if only for the accuracy of the Love Gun stage show. A great deal of attention to detail obviously went into this scene and it pays off. And Peter Criss actually gets a dramatic moment elusive to his bandmates for a change!

The DVD is worth getting for Kiss fans mainly because there's a multi-angle version of the song "Detroit Rock City" in the "Cutting Room" section of special features. With fire-breathing, smoking guitars, and the whole bit compressed into one song, this one special feature does in three minutes what the poorly edited "Kiss Symphony" DVD was unable to do in two hours - capture the magic of a Kiss show from the fans' point of view.

Three stars - one for the special feature multi-angle song, one for capturing the true spirit of the average Kiss fan, one for the tasty pop-culture references.

Summary: The Soul Of Rock n' Roll
Review: "Detroit Rock City" is a film that is excellently staged and acted. It captures well the atmosphere of the time period. It also captures excently the true soul of Rock n' Roll, and what it really means for people. With perfect actors for the characters, vivid imagery, and just the right amount of quirkyness, "Detroit Rock City" is a fun movie that you will never get tired of.

Summary: I liked this movie better the first time I saw it...
Review: ...when it was called "Rock N Roll High School".

Istill am not sure whether the moviemakers meant this as a"tribute" or just a ripoff. Before I even saw the movie, Isaw the poster and trailers, and figured it out. I could go on and onabout the similarities, but if you've seen RRHS you know exactly whatI mean, if you haven't, you probably are already mad at me and stoppedreading.

I'm not a big KISS fan, so I didn't get into that part. Itwas worth a matinee, though. The kids who played Trip and Lex wereespecially good, the kid who played Jam got on my nerves for somereason, just the guy's face. That's probably just me, though.

Onthe negative side, the movie had some pretty predicible moments. Therewas some gross-out humor that was unnessacary, just nasty and seemedtossed in to jump on the recent trendy grossout bandwagon. The movieended too suddenly. The 70's retro stuff was a little toocontrived. (I hate when they go out of their way to mention and show 8track tapes and happy face logos, etc) Most of the ideas were stolenfrom Rock-N-Roll High School. The dialogue needed work.

On theplus side, there were lots of twists to the plot that I didn't expect. There were a few Ramones songs used to great effect on the soundtrack(the more I think of it, the more I think the filmmakers, or someoneinvolved anyway, were Ramones fans). Lex is a dead ringer for Dee DeeRamone in the late 70's. The kid who played Trip was pretty talentedand funny. Good period detail and costumes. Cameo by Ron Jeremy(another trend lately, but so far it hasn't been run into the groundyet). Some good laughs, and some satisfying moments. You do feel forthese kids and want them to get in to the show...we all can identifyhow bad we wanted to see our favorite band live in high school. Andhey, it's not supposed to be Citizen Kane, so why not go and enjoyyourselves? You could do worse.

I could see how this would be,like, the ultimate movie to a KISS fan, just like Rock and Roll HighSchool is to a Ramones fan. But let's face it, if RRHS had never beenmade, the filmmakers defintely wouldn't have come up with this movie(or this version of it) on their own.

Summary: Movie Review
Review: After watching this movie the first time, I could not help but agree that it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Usually, it takes me awhile to really get into a movie. This movie however, from the very first scene to the ending concert provided non-stop laughter and enjoyment. This movie was creative in the sense that nearly every individual has been crazy about one particular band or musical group. I know that I sure have. This movie allows you to experience how much the band "Kiss" means to these four guys. They stop at nothing to make sure that they do not miss this concert of a lifetime. It was crazy watching how much they would go through just for this one night.

I also believe that the people they picked to portray the roles in this movie were very accurate. Every actor within this movie does a great job making their character come to life. This movie really makes you feel like you are in the 70's due to the way people act, dress and espicially what music they listen to. I strongly reccomned this movie to anyone. The storyline of this movie keeps you constantly asking yourself "what's going to happen next?" This movie I believe, will make anyone laugh. You are given the opportunity to follow along with these guys as they make their way to Detroit for the concert of a lifetime. One there way they break all the rules and defeat the odds.

Summary: KISS THE RULES GOODBYE ! ! ! ! !
Review: One of the best movies ever. One of my favorite's. I am a very huge KISS ARMY SOLDIER and I think this movies is one of the best. I love the intro. I think that KISS is not only for good music, it's also great for a central theme of a movie. Watch this one. It doesn't matter what type of movies you like.

Summary: fun movie
Review: I saw DRC in the theatre in the summer of 99. the theatre was pretty empty. actually, the movie usher said it was the emptiest he has seen it on a friday night all summer. But regardless, the movie was pretty funny. They should've named it Toronto Rock city as the Now torn down Exhibition stadium substituted for Cobo Hall. The radio station , church ( actually St James Catheral), diner and strip bar entrance occupied all 4 corners of Church and King streets in Toronto. They actually meet up right in the middle of the intersection in the Movie. I came upon it on my way to school in the fall of 98 when they were in town filming. The Finally kiss concert was held at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton ,Ontario. about 40 minutes west of Toronto. 3000 fans showed up to help out with the concert footage , it was convenient for the Band as they were in Toronto the night before playing the Skydome for the psycho Circus tour. Just some inside info on this funny flick
peace
