Summary: Formulaic but pleasing
Review: Heartwarming, formulaic little tale set in northern England about a divided family of hairdressers who reunite when the biggest hairdressing competition on the continent is being held in their small hamlet. Natasha Richardson is excellent as the beautiful woman who once modeled and was married to Alan Rickman, but ten years prior left him for Rachel Griffiths. Now Rickman and his son Joshua Hartnett run their little barber shop without participating in the more festive aspects of their profession. Everything that is supposed to happen happens without many surprises, but along the way there are some good laughs and genuine moments. This one is worthwhile because of its cast.

Summary: It's like "Whacky Races" of Hair Dressing Competition
Review: I have not attended a hairdressing competition before and I found many of the events in this movie too comical to be realistic. Like the melting comb, the burning hairdo, etc., unbelievable but gave us some good laughs. Shelly's illness could have given a good credibility as a serious movie but it was touched very lightly. Nor the subject on family conflict, differences, and reconcilliation. I would have delighted in seeing Josh Hartnett's role as a barber (or a hairdresser) in a more defined part of the story, that is, if he is making a career out of it or just simply doing it as part of the family business. Anyway, it's a good movie to divert your attention for a while. ...

Summary: Great Movie, Awesome Josh Hartnett!
Review: I have to be honest by saying that I first saw this movie because of my admiration for Josh Hartnett, but I grew to love this film very much. From the moment Josh opens his mouth and mumbles his first line in the most authentic, knee buckling British accent imaginable, I couldn't help but swoon every single time he spoke during the entire 1 hour and 46 minutes of the film. But enough about Josh... This film portrays a wide variety of hair dressers who all participate in a National Hair-Dressing competition that takes place in the U.K. Of course, all of them are there to win, but not everyone has the same priorities. I've seen this film a dozen times, and each time it gets better! It's a surprisingly enjoyable romp through the wide world of hair and its many followers!!

Review: I loved it~ As a Stylist I found this Movie to be just wonderfully fun~ There is so much that really does go into "working with hair"~ Competition in this field is next to none~ I owe all the Good Works of Art from Farouk Systems "Late Xenon"~ who passed away last year~Buy the film you will love every second of it!

Review: I must say, from the opening sequence, this film had me giggling. This is one of those movies that are best watched when you want to sit back, relax, free your mind and just enjoy! Although, there is a serious understory (a woman with cancer) it is not the main focus of this tale. It is handled with discretion, much like the character with cancer wishes her illness to be handled. This film was a pure delight to watch. I was pleasantly surprised and completely entertained. To be honest, there really is a message in this film. One of forgiveness, acceptance, reconciliation, and love....but it doesn't hit you over the head with it, nor does it fall into the trap of trying to be overly funny with slapstick humor. It's humor is in the observation of people at their most outrageous...without realizing they are, in fact, outrageous. Pure entertainment and well worth the short 91 minutes. Enjoy!

Summary: Ignore the U.S. cover box (as usual) & it's a treat
Review: I recently saw Richard Curtis' wonderful 'Love Actually' and - having been bowled over once again by the bountiful comic talents of Bill Nighy and great work of the sloe-eyed, laconic Alan Rickman - wondered where to turn next to enjoy the work of these two fine actors. The answer: "Blow Dry." Rickman and Nighy are fabulous as long-time rival hairdresser competitors in this campy but touching tale that tries very hard to get that unique "Strictly Ballroom" feel and camp/pathos/triumph balance. It falls just short of that, but it's a real treat nevertheless. Unfortunately, judging from the irksome U.S. coverbox you'd never guess this was such a touching, well-written and intelligently humorous movie with a *very* talented cast - Nighy, Rickman, Natasha Richardson (!), Rachel Griffiths (!!). Now, that's an honor roll. With all that going for it, why, why, why do we get force-fed a marketing campaign featuring Josh Harnett and Rachael Leigh Cook? Harnett is quite good here, actually, pulling off a British accent with aplomb. But poor Cook is placed into a no-win situation as the supposed Minneapolis-based daughter of hairdresser Nighy. It seems force-fed into the movie...she's totally boxed in here and can't fight her way out. I ignored this movie for two years because of bad marketing. How many others are going to miss out for the same reason? I knew Nighy (possibly my favorite actor) was involved, but felt like I was going to have to sit through a Harnett/Cook "She's All That" clone. I had to have a friend tell me otherwise. Turns out, nothing could be further from the truth. This is a great little film you need to check out as soon as possible. Two additional little treats - - Warren Clarke as The Mayor, who gets more and more showy and confident as the movie goes on (and actually shepards the film through its credits in a bit of solo showmanship). Name ring a bell? How about 'Dim' in "A Clockwork Orange"? Wow! Also, he's known in the UK most recently as Detective Andy Dalziel in the recurring TV series "Dalziel and Pascoe." - Heidi Klum, hiding behind pancake makeup and blonde fright wig as 'Total Look' muse 'Jasmine.' You wouldn't think it possible to turn Heidi Klum shrewish and unattractive, but 'Blow Dry' pulls it off.

Summary: Not Just About Hair
Review: I rented this movie because of two reasons: 1.) I love Alan Rickman and 2.) I read several reviews about it and thought I would find out for myself how good it was.
I am very glad that I rented (and very soon after, bought it) the movie. The performances by everyone were very well done.
Alan Rickman shines, as usual, as the divorced Phil Allen--a hair dresser who was once widely known for his incredible talent, but is now much more isolated. His performance is just incredible. I cannot find another word to describe him in this movie.
Natasha Richardson is not only gorgeous but also a wonderful actress. She gives a heartwarming performance in this movie. All her character--Shelley wants to do is reunite her family because of something that is going on with her (I don't want to give it away). When I first heard that she plays a lesbian in the movie I found it hard to believe that she could pull it off, but she was great! Her performance brought tears to my eyes.
Rachel Griffiths gives a stellar performance as Sandra, Shelley's partner. Oh my goodness, she brought tears to my eyes as well! She is a wonderful actress and I am so glad that she was cast in this movie.
As for Rachel Leigh Cook and Josh Hartnett, they were pretty good. Josh's accent wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worst either. I have no idea why the two of them are on the cover of the tape/DVD. They are NOT the main characters!!!
Other than that, the other characters (especially Bill Nighy) were fantastic. The whole movie is wonderful. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Drama and Comedy mixed together. Also, if you're an Alan Rickman fan, it's a MUST SEE!

Summary: hmmm, very much like a low budget ITV drama
Review: I rented this vid with such high hopes for it. I was thinking, hmm Josh Hartnets in it, and he's well riuch, so he wouldn't choose to go into a film inless the script was ace would he? WEll yes he would, and so would Alan Rickman and so would Rachel Leigh Cook. My god !!! There was terrible Yorshire acents for one, there was a set designer who was trying to hard to hard to make an apparently 1970's looking set, every single part was clich'ed and the plot was about as pradictable as a trip to the toilet. But luckily it was one of those films that is so terrible it makes you laugh, so my £2.50 wasn't wasted completely. If your looking for a good Josh hartnett then go else where, like Halloween H20 or $0 days and 40 nights. If you want a decent Alan Rickman film go for Dogma, and if you want a decent rachel Leigh cook film, then go for She'll all that.
