Summary: Solid romantic comedy
Review: Hugh Grant co-stars in this feel good romantic comedy with....err, sorry wrong movie. Perhaps that's the point. Maid in Manhattan is a fine feel good romantic comedy from director Wayne Wang. It's pretty much a variation on a theme without much originality. The plot isn't bad nor are the performances it's just a bit too familiar. Still, it is an enjoyable light feature even without Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant.

Ralph Fiennes is unexpectately warm and a pleasant surprise in this romantic comedy. The film is about as predictable as its twin Two Weeks Notice and still enjoyable despite the apparent connect the dots plot. There are a number of nice comedic touches and Wang continues to demonstrate both talent and a rare comedic flair as a director. It's a pity that the material wasn't better.

Maid in Manhattan is a nice, enjoyable romantic romp and a perfect way to spend a Friday evening in front of the T.V. It's a pity that Wang and the other performers weren't a bit more ambitious.

Summary: awful, awful, awful
Review: Three words: awful, awful, awful.

I knew this was going to be a lousy movie, but I didn't expect it to be as lousy as it actually was.

So J. Lo is some poor inner-city princess slaving away as a maid in a posh hotel. So Ralph Fiennes is a senatorial candidate wannabe with an uppity image to project. So J. Lo is caught trying on the clothes of a wealthy hotel guest, Ralph Fiennes mistakes her as being rich and he woos her. Hilarity ensues. At least it's supposed to.

I used to think Ralph Fiennes was a good pick for any film role of a dashing debonair snob, but after his creepy turn in Red Dragon I couldn't help but think that he would just go ballistic on J. Lo at any moment in the film. And given how annoying she is, that wouldn't have at all been undeserved. J. Lo did a lot of whining about lifting herself out of the working class. Some of the class consciousness banter made sense, most of it didn't. The only enjoyable moments of the movie were the ones with J. Lo's son, played by Tyler Posey (real life son of indie-queen Parker Posey).

Summary: Harmless Feelgood Factor
Review: I thought this film was a lovley humourous feelgood film. It was harmless and left me with a warm happy feeling. All the actors involved did a good job. If you are looking for a film to lift your spirits then go and see this. Delightful i would call it and Ralph Fiennes was so brave to come out of his usual character type of angst ridden and torutured soul.

Summary: Enjoyable, so whats the fuss?
Review: I dont know about everyone else, but i go to theaters to be entertained. I found this film entertaining. So shoot me. I know everyone is saying, "its no pretty woman", but lets be honest, J-Lo isnt exactely Julia Roberts anyway, so why compare apples and oranges. Mostly i was just moved by this movie because i went into the theater in a bad mood from a rough day, and left the theater with a smile on my face. If that wasnt worth my 9 dollars, then what is? i recommend this for anyone who wants just a nice, feel-good love story, without the complications of sitting through a film to see good acting or well thought out plots.

Summary: about this movie......
Review: I think that Wedding planner is much better compared to maid in manhatten as wedding planner is more hilarious. I feel that the male actor(Matthew McConaughey) in wedding planner acts well and lively compared to the actor, Ralph Rennes for maid in manhatten.

Summary: I must admit J.Lo's getting good.
Review: I thought that J.Lo's full metamorphesis was clearly apparant in this movie. I think that this movie is the BEST movie with the MOST authentic acting that she has done YET! Apart from Out of Sight and Selena she clearly has come full-cirle with her acting skills. I think that the acting lessons are FINALLY paying off!

Now this movie lacks the originality that it needs. It is in fact a "Cinderella" story that is shall we say "remixed" in a way that a Latina is the main star and the prince charming well... isn't that charming. I kept looking at Ralph Fiennes and kept thinking of his last movie "Red Dragon." Pretty hard to imagine that such a "creepy" man could be charming. Scary!!!

Well the Plot is not original and is sord of reminiscent of good 'ole Julia Roberts romantic movies. Clearly J.Lo's acting is improving and the whole Cinderella drama is smoothly brought out by the cute genius son of hers Ty. The movie clearly sends out the message that Love will prevail all and it can be found when you least expect it.

It is a reccomended movie, but I would wait for DVD or VHS. One time of viewing is "ENOUGH," but that's a whole other review. Peace out!

Summary: Not a classic, but still a lot of fun
Review: If you are a lover of romantic comedies, this a film you will enjoy. I've been somewhat surprised lately to learn that many people have disliked this film because it is formulaic and predictable. In other words, it is a formulaic film, but this is not, to me, a problem, since virtually all romantic comedies do, to some degree, follow a formula. So, yeah, guy meets gal, guy loses gal, guy gets gal back, but I like to think of romantic comedies as a thought problems. The one wanting to solve the problem (the screenwriter) has to get the two leads from point A (meeting) to point B (losing one another) to point C (getting together again) is free to navigate our hero and heroine in any way he or she chooses, and how good the film is depends upon how likable the characters are and how cleverly they move from Point A to Point C.

So on this standard, how does MAID IN MANHATTAN stack up? First, Jennifer Lopez is utterly adorable. I know she gets a lot of criticism in the media for being a diva, and perhaps she is, but onscreen, she almost always manages to be a thoroughly lovable individual. In this film, I like the way she manages to employ a Latino rhythm to her speech without actually having an accent. It is the sign of a good actress with a good ear. In her other romantic comedy, THE WEDDING PLANNER, she didn't have the slightest hint of a Spanish accent. Here, however, it is there ever so lightly, almost more of a hint rather than an actuality. Unfortunately, I didn't like Ralph Fiennes in his role of a senatorial candidate. He isn't bad; he just doesn't stand out here like he usually does in his roles. Nor do the two of them have nearly the degree of chemistry that I normally like to see, say like Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in WHEN HARRY MET SALLY or Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant in NOTTING HILL. But Jennifer Lopez is so adorable, and the situation that is developed is so enjoyable, that the romance is one that we pull for and hope for. We may not especially care that the two of them get together for the politician's sake, but we do very much pull for the maid. After all, in CINDERELLA, who really focuses on the prince rather than the heroine?

The film does a pretty good job of going from Point A to Point C. I can't say that it is one of the best romantic comedies I have seen in recent years, but for those of us for whom it is our favorite genre, it is a welcome addition.

Summary: Cinderella with a twist!
Review: Very much a movie at life "today" in the working world for a single mom. It was entertaining, the cast was fun and well done. The timing was right on. It appeared to be very predictable but just when you thought you knew- the plot made a shift. I laughed a lot, wanted to cry and was deeply moved as I watched the hearts desire being complicated because of prejudice and social class. It may take some good discussions to unpack all this little film holds about the human condition but this viewer got a lesson, a good reminder of how things too often are- and the way they should be able to be. Check it out, well worth the ticket.

Summary: zero chemistry
Review: Primarily, I detected no chemistry between the main characters and just couldn't believe that any depth of feeling developed from their brief and uncomfortable meeting in the park. Certainly not enough to spiral into the farce that followed. Her nobility of purpose in first, not telling him the truth and second, running away from him, was so unlikely and insincere that it set my teeth on edge. The Cinderella storyline allowed the viewer to predict the ending, eliminating even the small pleasure of mystery and doubt. The child's personality and thought pattern was written as though he were a mature, asexual adult with cute playful child-like attributes to remind us that we were watching a child. The male lead was occasionally convincing with his piercing stare and undivided attention but absolutely unconvincing as the offended and decieved lover. I walked out of the theatre bored and undiverted by this film. Don't waste your money - wait for it to hit cable.
