Rating: Summary: Not a big deal Review: I saw this movie when it was first released last year and honestly, it didn't make a very big or very good impression on me at all. Sure, Nia Vardalos and John Corbett are likable enough in their roles as culturally-crossed lovers and yes, I was glad that the filmmakers took the time to point out that there IS love out there for girls who aren't 18-year-old waifs--but other than that, I didn't see much to like about this movie at all. Toula's family is portrayed in the most unrealistic, stereotypical, over-the-top way imaginable with no real character development whatsoever. And worst of all, most of the movie isn't even funny! A chuckle here and there but for the most part I was sitting in the theater bored and/or annoyed. All in all it was a disappointing film-- and months later, I am baffled by it's popularity. This movie is worth a rent, maybe, but certainly not worthy buying.
Rating: Summary: Kudos to Nia Vardolis Review: I saw this film and was really impressed, I loved the characters and their unique individual personalities. I myself coming from an East Indian background could relate to this story in more ways than one. The charater that plays the father is a strict orthodox greek and tries hard to hold onto family tradition and values. The Mother is a warm home loving woman who wants her daughter to be just happy and is less restictive. I watched this film and had no other comparisons in my mind of other similar films.I could not think of any.I give kudos to Nia Vardolis who took a step to making her dream come true, it is a shame that just in the past year or so Hollywood has finally recognized different cultures, as money making films too.
Rating: Summary: Best Comedy I¿ve ever seen Review: I've read a couple of really negative reviews on here I felt the need to express my feelings about this movie. When I saw it I hadn't even heard of it yet. I was in California visiting family and it was playing at an Indie and Foreign Film Theatre. I read the synopsis of it in the paper and took a few friends to see it. It was one of the best comedies I've ever seen. I loved it so much that when someone had mentioned that they'd never seen it I insisted we go see it together. Then when it came to the second run movie theatre in my home town I went to go see it two more times. Everyone I saw it with loved it. Some people have said such things as it wasn't accurate or that it was too Hollywood, but I don't think they know what they're talking about. It wasn't supposed to be accurate, but instead show how much of an embarrassment one's family can truly be (especially when outsiders are involved). Secondly, how can the movie be too Hollywood when Hollywood didn't want to have anything to do with the film. Studio after studio turned it down and finally it was an Indie Film. The only reason its had so much advertising is because of how good it is. If it had been horrible it wouldn't have stayed in theatres as long as it did.Just a small rant I wanted to make.
Rating: Summary: This movie was as real as it gets. Excellent flick! Review: As a fellow 1st generation American and 100% Greek, I assure you that the movie was a replay of my life. My whole family laughed. We thought it was terrific. I guarantee you will definately enjoy it. We rarely purchase movies, but this one is a keeper. I've seen it twice and loved it more the second time. My children were in hysterics, because they were able to identify characters with their own family members.
Rating: Summary: Lived in Greece, married a Greek..Big Fat Truth!! Review: I saw "BFGW" with a friend, who also was once married to a Greek, and we laughed ourselves silly! Why? Because as Wasp Gals, who had lived in Greece with our Greek husbands, we saw soooo many things in the movie that expressed how Greeks feel about marrying outside their own people and how they feel about marriage in general! Also, I could "recognize" someone from "my Greek family by marriage" in each charachter of the movie! Go see/buy/rent this movie, This movie is a HOOT ![.] It is not offensive, it is about a Passionate People, who feel very strongly about EVERYTHING in their lives, work, play, and marriage partners for their children! They have a wonderful sense of humor about themselves, and have many sayings such as "the Greeks invented civilization but forgot to leave any for themselves". Dont let anyone stop you from seeing "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", it is a wonderful movie! Go get some of that Greek Passion for Living! now, I have to go order my dvd so I can see it again!
Rating: Summary: Pointless Drivel Review: I had heard so many wonderful things about this film and was quite anxious to see it. When I finally did I found it to be rather disapointing. The jokes were inanely obvious and played into tired stereotyping. Perhaps most irritating is that this film really had no plot - a thirtiesh woman meets a thirtiesh man, they have a relationship and get married. The only character development was the father's reluctant acceptance of the young man into the family. Hardly worth watching.
Rating: Summary: Great movie, but wait for the inevitable Special Edition DVD Review: A warm and very funny movie. Vardalos is fantastic, and the whole cast does a surprisingly good job. ... In three to six months we'll probably see a "Deluxe 2-DVD Edition" of the film, and I for one will not be buying this or any other movie twice. Just wait a couple months to release it and put out a fully-packed version. I'm tired of the studios milking fans with multiple editions of DVDs. So, great movie but skimpy DVD. Wait for the inevitable Special Edition...
Rating: Summary: My Big (DUMB) Fat Greek Wedding Review: This movie might have been funny for a few but I think it was the most boring and predictable movie ever. IF it was not for my wife I would have walked out in the first 10 minutes. It was shallower than an amoeba's swimming pool.... no character development just haphazard happenings and an unrealistic underdeveloped story line. I never for one accepted the premise that the guy would fall for the Toula character. Why? Just because you need that to make the movie work? Once you build the movie on such a shaky unconvincing premise it's ovah! The little humor that was attempted was anything but original, the amateur actors overacted, and the conflict/agony over the point of marrying a non greek was overdramatized. Take for example the morning of her wedding and waking up with a zit. Where that she steal that from a Clearasil commercial For Dionysius sake! I wish I had bought a couple of beers instead of paying 10 bucks to see this piece of junk. It's was a cheap movie and it shows. Next time don't forget the script. Love to all Meg Alopoutsa
Rating: Summary: hurrah for indie film!! Review: How happy are we that this film got all the recognition it deserved?! Although it probably deserved *more*. If you are from an ethnic family, you will not only laugh at this movie, you will IDENTIFY with it. I am from a gigantic, food-eating ethnic family and just about choked on my popcorn laughing at this hilarious movie. The casting is superb, and I'm glad Nia Vardalos played the lead character, because her acting was both honest and funny. All the characters played "that" relative...you know, every family has one! Surely you know the father, who believes Windex is a cure-all, or the slightly-older aunt who is oh-so-glamorous and would love to tell you about a medical miracle she just lived through. Perhaps you know the cousin-- you know her --the one who wears her skirts up-to-here and has horrible taste in clothes. Or the mama, of course, the mama who will make you a nice big something-to-eat even if you aren't hungry. Everyone can find something to love in this movie, because it essentially tells the story of everybody's family-- this is America, and those of us who come from a big, fat, multi-cultural family will appriciate how honestly and charmingly this film portrays the real-life comedy of growing up and getting married.
Rating: Summary: funniest 2002 movie Review: This movie is so funny. It's a clean movie. It makes you forget the outside world. The movie shows that people with opposite beliefs can over look things with love and laughter.
